Another good Braizilian flick is Carandiru. It's about a huge prison riot and aids epidemic in a Sao Paulo prison where 100+ unarmed men were shot dead. Based on a true story.

Wasn't impressed.

I thought it was better than Tropa De Elite. Cidade De Deus was a damn good movie though. It seems like those are the two big Brazilian flicks. Def. check out Meu Nome Nao E Johnny if you get a chance though. It's about a guy who sells a ton of drugs in Rio and then just goes and blows the money in Europe with his girl, and repeats this process while being caught, having to pay off pigs, and getting stuck in fucked up situations the whole way through. Probably one of my favorite movies.

And to add to my list:
Casino, Jackie Brown, Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells, Four Rooms, Goodfellas.

No way!

Tropa de Elite is way much better than Carandiru! If you want a prison movie watch "Prisioneiro da grade de ferro", a doc shooted by the prisoners.

Deixa que essa fase é passageira, amanhã será melhor você vai ver a cidade inteira seu samba saber de cor!

Meh, I didn't like Tropa de Elite that much. But then again part of the reason might have been I was stoned (doido) and the subtittles on that movie were ridiculous fast. I feel like I didn't catch a lot of it. I'll try and check out that movie, but I'm sure you can only find it in Brazil. Did you see Lula: O Filho do Brasil? I wanted to see it but I think I left the country before it came out. It looked like it was gonna be good. The dumbest name, and trailer for a movie I've ever seen has to go to Vampiras Lesbicas. Wow, couldn't believe that one went to theaters in Brazil. I want my money back from District 9 for making me watch the trailer for that movie.

I would like to recommend, 'The Hill'.

Not many people will know this film. It was directed by Sidney Lumet and stars Sean Connery in one of his earlier films just after he began playing James Bond. You can watch it on youtube with the first segment here:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPiayNs9U...45&index=1

It is set in a British army military prison in africa during WWII. I think the dialogue is fantastic (although maybe harder for some americans to follow because of the heavy British accents). The cinematography is also excellent and so don't be put off that it was shot in B & W...

Don't bother even checking it out if you like mainstream Hollywood films.

Gomorrah is a pretty good film. It's like City of God, but based in Italy. It's about the current Mafia/Gang culture that controls a lot of the drug/sex trade in Europe.

I second Mrs Chocolates rec for Amadeus!

Gomorrah is aiiight, if you thought it was good, then you definitely got to check out the French flick called "A Prophet", I mentioned it previously on this thread, it's a prison/gangster flick, kind of like a new age version of Scarface. For anyone into the gangster/crime genre I highly recommend you check out the documentaries Cocaine Cowboys and Cocaine Cowboys 2, the first one is mostly about the trade in Miami in the 1970-80's. The sequel is much more entertaining and is set in Oakland, CA during the crack epidemic, but both are good.

Also, a BBC series that I found at the indp. video store is called "The Take", man it's dark, gritty, and straight up fucking crazy, Brittish gangster shit. Man, why is that the Europeans are straight holding it down on the gangster shit these days, the U.S. needs to step up and drop another Scarface or Heat. BTW, the Hughes brothers who did "Menace to Society" were going to be doing a series based in Oakland set around the street life (pimping, drug dealing, etc.), kind of like "The Wire" but Oakland styles, but apparently the city of Oakland and HBO were having issues, so I don't think it's set for production.

I kept seeing that movie on netflix. I'll have to check it out. I've always come so close to watching it, but I'm always stoned when I'm working my overnight shift when I'm watching netfilx, and I hate reading subtittles when I'm stoned.

I just finished watching Cocaine Cowboys 2... I'd already seen Cocaine Cowboys 1 before... and man, that shit is crazy! When they got into The Godmother's life story, and the parts about Medellin, it gave a unique look at the history of Medellin. Man, I remember taking the gondola up the hill where she grew up, and just thinking "just another poor neighborhood in the world." I had no clue about the blood that ran down those mountains! Her story is one hell of a story. And the parts about JFK's son! WTF!

yeah i loved gomorrah though it's very different from american italian gangster films like goodfellas and casino

if you liked gomorrah, you should check out romanzo criminale, about gangsters in rome in the 70s and 80s, based on true story - not the best film ever but def watchable

two great films in spanish:
-sin nombre: about young gangsters in honduras, gritty film
-huevos de oro: my fav spanish film of all time by vigas luna - about a playerish guy and his downfall - some decent poontang too

I rarely watch mainstream movies, I just get tired of every movie turning into a love story. I am more into movies with untraditional plots after all life ain't a Disney movie.

Heading South- About young gigolo living 1970 Haiti and his impressive bitch management skills.

The Mack-- Pimp up, hoes down. What else can it be said? One of the most quoted movies in Hip Hop after "Scarfaced." The is so much Alpha Game in this movie that will make your head exploded.

La Mala Educacion (the bad education)-- very strange homo erotic plot but overall a fascinating movie.

Towel head--one of the most realistic teenage coming of age flicks I have ever seen. Makes lolita look like a comic book.

Mysterious Skin--very disturbing movie, yet I couldn't stop watching. Great script.

Blindness-- a classic tale between Betas vs Alphas.

Anatomy of Hell--A gay Frenchie misogynist gets taught a lesson about female sexuality that he will never forget.

Exposure aka High Art (1991). Haven't seen this one in ages but all the talk on the Philippines forum of knife fighting made me want to see it again, but sadly it's only available used on VHS.

Peter Coyote stars as a American photographer taking pictures in Rio, Brazil. He stumbles into a murder involving a prostitute he often photographed. Him and his girlfriend get brutally assaulted by hired thugs that knife him and leave him for dead. Obsessed with revenge he learns knife fighting from a master and sets out on the streets of Brazil to get revenge.

I remember it being really good and you guys would probably like the Rio aspect too, wish I could track down a DVD.

"Heat" by Michael Mann - best and most accurate gun battles ever portrayed on film. The Director has been through some rigorous training of his own. - Deniro and Pacino at their best. The downtown LA gun battle is the stuff of legend.

"Sex and Lucia" - if you like looking at Paz Vega!

Blindness was a good movie. It's pretty obvious that she wanted to give Gabriel Garcia Bernal the blowjob at gunpoint.

If you guys haven't seen the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasus you should check it out. Heath Ledger died halfway through the movie so they had to replace him with Johnny Depp and Jude Law.

I'm into Asian films recently. Less politically correct and with much more depth. I loved Lust, Caution. One of the best movies I ever seen. Pretty much any movie with Tony Leung, he is a natural player and clearly shows in the movies. Last Life In The Universe was awesome too. Nanking Nanking if you are into war movies about the Japanese massacre in China. Okuribito or Departures in English shows Japanese way of life in a nice way. Korean 'Bittersweet Life' is pretty good too with lots of action.

Asian cinema is so much more refreshing after watching Hollywood crap for the last few years.

Just saw all the films - except the korean - that you recommended, and they are definitely VERY much worth seeing. Only problem is that you really want to go travel ASAP after seeing them.

Cracker Jack, did you know that the team behind Last life in the Universe had made a 2006 movie called Invisible Waves? Sounds like a pretty interesting plot - I'll report back once I have seen it.

But loads of good advice in this thread. Somebody mentioned The Hill with Sean Connery - it is very good as well - pure alpha acting.

If you haven't seen them yet, 'Closer', 'Vicky Christina Barcelona' and 'Alfie' have got some interesting stories about attraction and seduction - plus good action and hot women. Obligatory international playboy entertainment.

watched Tropa de Elite 1 over the weekend - liked it, especially the second part; I liked how they worked out the character of Nascimento (bad ass BOPE captain); I thought the other characters were less interesting

don't quite understand though why BOPE training entails learning the word "strategy" in 7 different languages....

and the part where they say they're tougher than israeli defence force is obviously BS

They aren't training strategy. It is a concentration lesson. After hours and hours of hard hork and though exercises with no time to eat and sleep properly how your body would react? Exacly.

yeah i get that

but with how nascimento pronounced it the word "strategy" sounded exactly the same in each language (spanish, italian, english, german)

if he wanted to mess with their heads, why not get them to memorise the word for "bread" in each language

I saw Tropa de Elite years ago and just thought it was a good action flick, nothing special here. For some good brazilian cinema, I enjoyed City of God much more. The soundtrack by Raul Seixas is also amazing.

This one is for kerouac, after the α vs β (Le mépris), here we have 2 different types of alphas battling each other. In this I consider Zurlini's camera work and photography superior to Antonioni , this is a pretty big statement.

The key is not the speech, it is the tune. Veeery easy and slow. Anything he said would mess their heads anyway.
