Head shots are great when they hit but 2" too low and you wind up with a wounded animal walking around with its jaw blown off for a month until it starves to death, not pretty. I have also shot a farm-raised pig right between the eyes with a .22 handgun and it squealed and ran off (granted the shorter barrel probably didn't let all the powder burn before exiting so lower velocity) but I only use the .22 for plinking these days. That was a great shot however.

The problem with .22lr is that they are rimfire, not centerfire cartridges. They are far, far less reliable than the common 9mm round. For pure practice at the range, having a few misfires that you have to clear is probably a good thing so that you don't panic when you get a goofy grip in a self defense scenario, causing your bigger gun to not cycle properly.

There are plenty of small 9mm out there, and even .25acp. All more reliable than 9mm. And if you're buying 2000 rounds, chances are you're not buying hollow point or self defense ammo, but range ball ammo. You want your bullets to hit your mark and expand, dumping all the energy in their flesh. Not passing through them.

I got a Mosin Nagant and a Saiga AK-74. Big fan of Russian weaponry, in case you couldn't tell already. I'd probably have an SVD instead if they weren't so goddamned rare (and four times as expensive as my car). Still, I'm glad I got my Saiga before the panic buying and price-jacking set in, though I'm starting to suspect it has a bad barrel, because I can never get better than a 6 inch grouping at 100 meters. Still an absurdly fun rifle to shoot.

Unfortunately, I feel like my Nugget kicks harder than it probably should. I've shot a .50 rifle that had more manageable recoil than that rifle. It's fairly accurate, and it is hella fun to shoot, but the recoil, in addition to a crack forming in the stock and the fact that it was built when the Russians were in "ohshitnazis" mode kinda takes away from it's potential to be an actually great firearm.

Once I turn 21, I'll probably look into getting either a Makarov, a Tokarev, or a CZ-75.

These two shoot the same rounds with the same magazines. The one on the left is a pistol, while the one on the right is a rifle. This causes a great deal of different legalities when carrying and transporting the weapons.

I have a few. I'm primarily interested in old military bolt actions, particularly Mausers. I have a Mosin Nagant as well, which is fun because ammo is so cheap.

It's an inexpensive gun to buy, but that has nothing to do with quality, as I can drill shotgun clays at a 100 yards with it no problem. And with the right ammo I'd feel confident hunting most animals in North America with it.

I believe you are mistaken. Those are probably both rifles. The AK "pistol" on the left is a pistol because of the short barrel which is what I assume you're referring to. The buttstock on this pistol now makes it a Class III short barrel rifle (SBR), for which you need a Class III tax stamp and is a serious felony. Paraphrased from my understanding... a pistol is meant to be fired from one hand. If you place a buttstock or foregrip on it, it becomes a SBR.

However it that is a forearm brace, that is a very nice pistol and disregard my previous paragraph.

@scubadude, it's a brace, so it's a pistol. It came with a certification letter from BAFTE. There is currently some disagreement whether it is used one handed or braced can alter what it is classified as, so it's not the best weapon for GoPro selfies.

@Cattle Rustler, it's an IWI Tavor. I got a good deal when they first came out, so it ran $1850. You should pay that or less now, because supply caught up with demand.

Demand is still high, because owner's like myself love them. I've never found a good shoulder notch for M4/AR15's, but the Tavor just locks into place. It has a 16.5" barrel, versus 10" for the Zastava M92 AK (pistol on the left). Plus, the Tavor feels and has been super reliable. Trigger pull could be better, but it seems to bother other folks more than me. I would have taken this with me on my deployments, even sans full auto/3 round burst, had they let me.

I've only held the PS90, but it wasn't real comfortable for me. I've also shot the Stey AUG. Good bullpup, but I won't be trading the Tavor any time soon.

I live on a farm and own multiple firearms common to rural life, primarily "varmit killers" ie: 22lr rifles/carbines and .410 bore shotguns. Nothing beats a good short barrel .410 for tidying up the farm when your checking the fences or doing general property maintenance. I keep it in a holster on the 4 wheeler most of the time. I keep a scoped .22lr in the bathroom too. I see a lot of bullshit animals fucking about in my fields when I'm on the throne.

Also have a tactical 12ga. nicknamed "the Butler" by the bed and a match quality .44lc competition pistol, single shot with iron sights and adjustable weights from when I used to compete in high caliber pistol NRA events.

If you enjoy shooting as a pastime or hobby, definitely acquire a good quality .22 caliber weapon. If you live in the country, find a good backstop and get some targets. It can be very relaxing.

I've noticed a few posts mentioning using bird loads in 12ga. due to concerns with wall penetration. There are specialty loads in 00 and 0 buckshot that address these concerns with a combination of lower velocity and alternative materials for the pellets, yet retain much of the stopping power of the standard buck loads. I fear if you do have to use your weapon in earnest, those bird loads won't perform the way you would like them too. Also, a flashlight/laser sight combo on your home defense 12ga. is inexpensive and should be considered a necessity. If you insist on using a pistol for home defense, learn the flashlight-in-offhand grip that law enforcement uses regularly. Please don't shoot at menacing shapes in the darkness.

quick edit - I've seen some conspiracy theory level discussion of the governmen,t through some vague mechanism, making ammunition scarce. How they are are accomplishing this varies by theorist. There is no conspiracy. Demand for ammo is at an all time high in the US since 2008 and none of the major producers have increased production. Increased demand and flat supply. Its caused a nasty feedback loop where demand has grown even stronger due to stockpiling.

Here are some Battle of Waterloo rifles. It puts into perspective a lot of the annoyances of using flintlocks in battle, the long wait between trigger squeeze and firing, plus the huge fireball right in front of your face.

Which is actually really fun when you're just screwing around. It reminds me that I still need to get my double barrel flintlock pistol working.

I built an 80% AR-15 that doesn't need to be registered with the Fed

For those that don't know - you can purchase an 80% completed lower receiver, you don't need to register it, can pay cash, and receive it at the time of purchase.

You can machine this "yourself" aka find a buddy with a CNC Machine and "press the button" OR you can literally do it yourself.

Once this 80% lower has been machined, you have a fully functioning lower that you can get a lower kit for - throw in an upgraded trigger and stock if you'd like.

All you need to do now is purchase an upper receiver - once again you can pay cash, receive it the same day, and it doesn't need to be registered.

Put the upper and lower together and you've got yourself a fully functional AR-15 that no one knows about.

I live in CA, and it's even legal here, of course I get my 30 round mags across state lines (I NEVER take them outside my house of course)

Throw some optics, grips, other tac stuff, and you've got a badass rifle you built yourself on the cheap.

Excluding optional equipment, the basic rifle I built cost me around $600-700, and you get a basic education in rifle building along the way, which is priceless.

I'll jump in here, I've been shooting guns since I was 9. I've shot the following:

Taurus .38
Ruger .45 (can't remember the model number off the top of my head, but it was a DA automatic)
Mossberg 20 and 12 gauge pump
M1A SOCOM
Model of 1911 Kimber (Pro II, the $800 model, because you can only go up in price, with Kimber)
Glock 17 and 19

Out of all those, mostly being pistols, I bought myself a single-shot .22, and I'm working on becoming a proficient shot with that, before I graduate to a semi. I'd go with a bolt-action, reliable, accurate and teaches you to really not waste ammo. I'd say it's easier to hit with a .45 (less recoil) than a 9mm (but that's more than likely because I've shot mostly Polymer framed pistols in 9mm, as opposed to steel-frame .45's, maybe the Browning HP kicks less?) Anyways, for putting down drug-crazed thugs, get a .45

Ever since I picked up the lever rifle I've fallen in love with cowboy guns. Want to pick up a single-action six shooter next.

I have a bit of a quandary with pistols. I love the big American calibers, but can't shoot them very well. With 9 mm I can drill the bullseye without much thought.

Hey guys,

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to guns, and can't recall ever firing anything more dangerous than a paintball gun. Never had any real aversion to it, I've just lacked opportunities/desire to learn until now. What's the best way to go about learning to shoot? Should I find a class/instructor? And what's a good resource about learning gun stuff and finding what's right for me? (Besides, of course, firsthand experience.)

I'm interested for learning for recreation but also for self-defense. I'm more skeptical of collapse theory than a lot of guys around here but even I can tell that these are uncertain times and that it would be beneficial to train up.

I'm more inclined toward rifles than handguns since I think I'd prefer a weapon that's accurate and has good range. I want experience shooting before buying anything, but I have plenty of cash and I'm not averse to paying for something high quality.
