Anybody here own a firearm?

As a Canadian with very little experience with guns, I can sympathize with Bill Burr's confusion:

Respect to the American forum members who do a good job educating the rest of us, I will be making a point to learn and try more on my travels down south.

I don't currently own any guns, but as a tip to everyone interested, NEVER BUY FROM A GUN SHOP. You'll have to register the firearm, and you DO NOT want Uncle Sam to know you have guns. My stepdad works for his state's government in a field where gun use is a small component of his work, and he's only got two registered firearms, while he owns more than 2 dozen different guns. He always buys from private dealers. When gun control laws get tightened, your guns will be confiscated if the gov't knows you have them.

There is no gun registry in the USA. When you go to buy a gun from a gun shop, you do fill out a form so that they can run an instant FBI background check. Those forms never leave the gun shop. I have filled out forms, had a background check run, but never bought the firearm before.

Also, there is no 3 day waiting period. You go in, select the gun, fill out the form, they run the check, you purchase it, you now have a gun. Takes no more than 15 minutes.

The "gun show loophole" is the notion that you can go to a gun show and buy from a private seller without filling out paperwork. This is true, you can do this. At gun shows you will find licensed dealers and private sellers. However, you do not have to go to a gun show to do to buy a firearm without filling out a background check. If you were my neighbor and liked my rifle, we can arrange a sale right then and there. Anytime you buy from a licensed firearms dealer, they run a background check on you.

One thing to note that you as the seller have the responsibility to know if the buyer is legally able to purchase a firearm. It is a felony (a major one with jail time) to sell a firearm to a felon (or someone who cant legally buy one).

Also, just so you all are aware. You can buy machine guns aka fully automatic firearms. They are called Class III firearms. It is legal in many states. You have to file paperwork with the ATF, wait 6 months, and pay a $200 tax stamp.

A man should own a gun.

I have a 12 gauge tactical shotgun that sits on the windowsill above my bed. 7+1. All bird shot. And that +1 is always in the chamber. If a noise wakes me up, I reach above my head and flip the safety off. Pressure switch on the handgrip for a tac light.

Ive only been startles enough to grab it twice. But you better believe that those two times I was loaded for bear and ready to defend my castle. Turned out to be false alarms, but I wouldve been scared shitless had I not had it.

And females have commented on it. Ive had two straight up tell me they feel a lot safer in my bed than theirs because of my shotty just sitting there ready to throw some hate down on an intruder.

Any particular reason you load it with bird shot instead of buck?

On the farm we have a 9mm, a .357 and a 12 gauge.

I'm not sure about that hoops330, the scatter from a shotgun at close range is negligible to the point that you wouldn't be much better off than you would be with a handgun. In addition, a round of buck from a 12 gauge is going to rip through most home walls and could endanger anyone else in the house.

Shotguns still remain the king of close quarters combat for one simple reason. Stopping power. It will end a fight immediately if you can hit someone. The lower threshold of handguns however, you may need to put several rounds into someone before they are unable to fight back, their stopping power is generally sufficient though starting at the .357 and up range, below that you could be in trouble.

I load bird mainly because of what dangers of shooting through walls, I live in an apartment building and don't want to sink some rounds into the neighbor.

Also I have no doubt a good hit with bird is going to put a guy on his ass. It won't kill him, but that's enough pain to drop a full grown man. That is going to buy me a critcial second or two. I can use that time to pump more rounds into the target, or I can possibly use that to secure his weapon and essentially subdue him.

It has a room on the buttstock for five rounds. I keep 3 slugs and 2 buck loaded there. Just in case.

If you have a family member or friend who shoots have them take you to the range. I live in an unfriendly state as well so we need to get a card to own a gun which takes a while and is kind of a pain.

As far as getting started take an NRA pistol course or some type of gun safety course. Before you buy a gun go to a range that rents guns and try out some different stuff.

You should also learn the difference between single action, double action, etc.

I have a Beretta PX4 Compact and a Beretta Jetfire or 950 which is the james bond gun with a flip top barrel.

If you live in the country shooting is a lot of fun as you can step off your back porch and shoot. If not it's honestly an expensive hobby and kind of a pain. Near me ranges charge $20 per person for the lane at the range plus ammo which isn't cheap. Shooting inside isn't my favorite thing either as your inhaling gunpowder and lead and its loud, I prefer outdoor ranges.

If your looking to get your first gun revolver is probably the simplest if you squeeze it shoots. With an automatic its simple once you get it down but upon first getting a gun I was a little nervous ie is one chambered or is it not, how to take it apart, etc.

If your looking for an automatic I think one of the best bang for your buck guns is SCCY pistols, American made, good reports on quality, and very cheap I think a gunshop by me has a 9mm for under $300 and includes a couple extra magazines and a hogue grip and a case.

If anyone is looking for deals look on ArmsList website, they have everything and some good deals too. You can buy from private parties or from gun shops. In my state they recently passed laws making even private sales do a background check and waiting period but in the past you could just meet a guy in a parking lot and buy whatever you wanted. I know some states are nice no waiting periods just buy and walkout the door my state has 3 day waiting period and nothing is worse than waiting 3 days to go shoot a new gun

I have three guns.

1. Browning lever rifle in 308 Winchester. My Dad gave me this gun and I use it for hunting deer, elk and moose. Lots of people try telling me that I'm crazy hunting moose without a magnum rifle but that's complete bullshit. You just have to know the capabilities of the gun and make sure you're close enough. Besides, it's much easier to accurately shoot a 308 compared to a 300 win mag because the recoil is much less. Big guns recoil hard and cause a flinch which is hard to get rid of.

2. Benelli 12 gauge pump action shotgun. A 12 gauge shotgun is probably the most versatile gun that you can own. Can use it for bird hunting, bear defence in the wilderness, hunting etc. I bought a pump action because it's significantly cheaper and its also more reliable.

3. CZ Shadow 9mm handgun. I bought this for fun to use at the range. In Canada, a handgun is a complete waste of money. I've used the thing twice. It's definitely fun to shoot though.

Dj matt how you like the hipoint? Ive heard mixed reviews but you cant beat the price. I think they make an affordable snapon piece to turn the pistol into a carbine as well which I thought was pretty cool. They make one for my px4 but not worth the money

For the money a hi point is great, however you gotta get used to all the weight being on the top, since that's the only metal on this gun. Sights aren't that great, but it's a 9mm for under $200. I am a very good shot-sights or not so bad ones don't throw me off too much. I thought it'd be a good starter gun for the bigger calibers. Next I want a Beretta 9mm.

The p22 is fantastic, accurate as fuck and has great sights. Never jams, even on the cheapest of shit ammo you use, and I've run thunderbolt through it. There is a laser sight kit for it which would be pretty badass for a plinker gun to have [Image: biggrin.gif]

I forgot, actually own THREE guns. My first gun purchase:

Still have it, but hardly ever shoot it. Beretta u22 Neos, just happened to be the cheapest one on sale at Academy. Turned out it's gone up in value so I should sell it! Has a really long barrel too but unlike the Walther it's very heavy. It does jam on the cheaper ammo. Carbine kit is available for it.

Out of these three only the Walther has a hammer you can de-cock.

1986 browning citori over-under 32 inch and had a 34 inch single barrel used it for trapshooting in high school we won multiple national championships. Have some 8s cause that is mainly what I shot and I have lots of them. If you really wanted good stopping power I would recommend a 4 buck, but as people mentioned these will do a number on walls in a house. I want to get a pistol eventually but for now this is my welcoming present for any unwanted visitors. It is just a little big for home defense. [Image: UB7nPvj.jpg?4]

Anybody out there with some stories and tips?

Move an hour north and live free or... you know. I've got a few and shoot handguns the most, shotguns are fun too though. Also have an M14 on the way. Favorite gun is made in Worcester - Kahr PM45. Temperamental gun but comfortable and easy to conceal, and loaded with stopping power. My first handgun was a Walther P22 which I still love to shoot. Good to learn on and really cheap to shoot.

I've gotten my shooting medals from both a .22LR (semi-auto and revolver) and a 9mm (semi-auto). I have a .22LR rifle in my closet (yeah, I know it has zero knock-down power but you only need to hit 'em just right once to get the job done), though, just in case. I was looking to do an AR-15 .223 build a while back but never had the money to do it.

I have a couple bricks of 9mm and .40 S&W ammo in my nightstand so I've been looking for a handgun to complement them. So yes, I'm a gun owner too (I own my rifle but don't have a pistol just yet).

Check out the Aguila 60 grain bullet .22 cartridges if you can find them, those do some damage. Charge is all primer I believe so still penetrates just as deep into a phone book as the 40 grains do but mushrooms like crazy.

HawkWrites, if you're near an Academy Sports and Outdoors, they sell a turkish made CZ clone called Tristar, it comes in 9mm. Fairly decent priced.

I have a 1911 A1 I've been trying to sell for a little while.

Picked up a Walther PPQ M2 and a Colt LE6920MP-B. The Walther is one badass pistol and led to me selling my HK P2000. I haven't had a chance to take the Colt out yet.

I'll take a look at that, thanks! I'm guessing those are hollow-points?

Is that CZ a rifle or a handgun? I know there are 9mm rifles (Colt comes to mind) so I'm curious.

The most accurate pistol I own is a Glock 27. For some reason these baby Glocks are more acurate than full sized ones. I like .40 for its stopping powerror and portability. Please, don't start a caliber war here. Another reason I like .40, is that .40 in Glock 27 has 9 rounds in the magazine, which is fine for most, even anti gun states like CA.
But if you like 9mm, by all means get Glock 26. Glock's reliability is legendary, with most problems arising from CA style reduced capacity magazines.

Not hollow point, solid but very soft probably lead material which mushrooms if it hits anything hard and yaws and tumbles in gelatin.

Gotcha. I'm not used to ammo doing that unless it's hollow-point or semi-wadcutter.
