American hate while traveling

The US sunk a lot into Europe during the cold war with defense, NATO, etc.
European nations could then afford internally to push lazy, welfare state policies knowing big bad Uncle Sam would (defensively) always have their back.

Europeans hating Americans is like the teenager living at home rent-free with no job hating his parents.

Here in argentina most (if not all) the hate a person from the USA can get is from the "che t-shit" left wing zombies that apparently infest this great nation. Do not worry, most of the population in fact like foreigns, be from the USA or elsewhere. Off course, while most of the USA tourist i have meet are really nice, i had my share of "ugly americans" (and not unexpected, most of them were females).

When i´m feeling blue, when i just need something to shock me up, i look at this thread and everything get better!

I'd say for most europeans it's love and hate on a equal level.

No one can ever take away the good and great the US has done, on cultural and scientific levels.
But the same goes for the bad things.

I mean let's just be honest, the american foreign policy is just unbelievably horrendous and and anything of "cultural" value being spread through your media invading other countries the last 20 years is just downright poisonous to everything of good traditional value, I'm talking about things like rampant feminism & lil'wayne .

I don't know what has happened and where it all has began ,but the US policy, culture and economy kind of evolved into some sort of cancer eating itself and at the same time infecting others.

What does it matter if they helped to take down a dictatorship 70 years ago, but abondoning all for what the US stands and are about to become one themselves? And probably already are.

The constant reminder about saving Europe is also getting a bit odd.

How about asking the Iraqis or Vietnamese if their asses were saved.

@Sombro

what you call lazy is really just awareness about using power when needed. I am sure you agree, that your war-machine hasn`t always been used for honorable purposes throughout history.
The US has it`s own way of selling war as "liberation of other countries people" when in reality it`s all about resources or/and strategic decision.

I'm basing this off the four months I spent in Europe, mostly Germany.

In some places I'll claim to be from Scandinavia, Canada, whatever, especially if I have no interest in making friends with anyone at the establishment. It's a real good idea to gauge the crowd first. At the school I went to in Germany, most of the people there thought I was Norwegian before I told them otherwise because I wore form-fitting clothes and I'm fairly tall with blond hair and blue eyes.

I'm not going to pretend to be a spokesman for everyone in the United States. In many situations, it's a waste of time to have that cultural show-and-tell because most of the people who have any beef with it are random dudes who will do nothing but salt your game. I've gotten into political discussions at bars that did nothing but cost me potential bangs, waste my time, and get me good and hammered. I've also made a handful of good friends by doing that, so it really depends on your priorities.

Although, if you're going to pretend to be from somewhere's else, it's best if you know their language and custom first, or you're going to look like a real dickhead if someone calls your bluff.

“I have a very simple rule when it comes to management: hire the best people from your competitors, pay them more than they were earning, and give them bonuses and incentives based on their performance. That’s how you build a first-class operation.”

Well, not to be bearer of bad news but everybody slags everybody else off.

It is just easier to convince people to rant about the USA because of the foreign policy over the last few decades.

You get at the English for bad teeth, we say you're country is to blame for a lot of obesity and then you start ranting about all sorts of things. You're easily baited.

The most "hate" I got was in Denmark, mostly political, but I also got tons of love too.

Saying you're American is a huge DHV in Eastern Europe, especially if you go against the fat and ignorant stereotype.

Most love for being American:
Sweden
Romania
Brazil (I have a feeling this is going down)

Least love:
Iceland
Denmark
Latvia

When I lived, studied and worked in Germany (Bavaria to be exact), I got tons of love. But most people don't dig into the details. Most of the "love" that I got for being from the States was on an individual basis. People would be sitting next to me, talking to me, discussing my life in the states and how it was different in Germany. You'd have some deep and heartfelt discussions.

Now, if I were to go to a rally (the students were protesting tuition hikes) and start talking about your country, then you're not arguing with intelligent individuals, but rather the mob. At that point, forget it, idiocy rules.

And yes, you're right about being an American in EE. I was born there and have a US passport [Image: smile.gif] . It's a double-edged sword. On one hand, the people will be very happy to see you, on the other -- at least in some parts of EE, like Kyiv -- you'll simply get your walled taken pick-pocketed, this happened to me [Image: smile.gif] .

American culture and media are simply one large ball. And it's really the culture that's responsible for the current rot (obesity, for example).

If Europeans are so advanced and cosmopolitan, how could something on t.v. from another warp them? Wouldn't they on a different level and ignore it?

I have been living in Europe for more than a year and a half and haven't gotten any hate yet. Some people might ask me about political things but I'm good enough at debating that I can make just about anybody change their mind. If anything it's helped me, Ljubljana girls get starry eyed if you tell them you're from NYC or Cali. But in the long run anybody who treat a person poorly because of where they were born does not deserve my time or friendship.

In the UK and Ireland as an American you will get special treatment and generally loved.

Can't comment on mainland Europe but I would say don't feel as though it is exclusively anti-American anywhere. Lots of French people dislike Brits, Germans etc etc.

I agree.

I do some business in the UK and Ireland last year, and people were nice.

Then again, I am not hanging around the council housing types.

I was in Dublin when Sandy Hook broke, and I can't tell you how many people brought it up and were appalled that America hasn't banned guns. One waiter said to our party at a restaurant, "Something will be done now, won't it?" My reply as I signed the check -- "Not a chance in hell."

He still smiled at the tip.

The left wing tree hugging kind. I met a few of those "Americans"

Another kind and maybe even worse are the instant apologizers. They start apologizing for America as soon as they said they were Americans.

One word - Cowards. I hate A LOT of things about America but I'm not fixing to act like I'm from somewhere else or apologize for whatever stupid grudge they hold. Got any stories about those people that you can go into detail a little more about Neil?

It's too bad for you travelling Americans that you have to put up with this. You can thank George W. Bush and his enablers. America-hate in Western countries didn't really exist before the Iraq invasion, believe me.

Tell me about it haha. Everytime I go over to another country the first thing they ask me is if im for gun control. Almost everybody when they find out im from the US they tell me their opinion on the issue and almost always tell me they are against the way we handle the gun situation. I dont get it either.

Not really a story. Most of the time I ignored people like this after I found out their cowardice behavior. I do the same with people form Holland who instantly apologize for Geert Wilders a Dutch politician who is not to fond of multiculturalism.

I usually think of the old saying: If you're not a socialist at age 20, then you don't have a heart. If you're a realist at age 30 you don't have a brain.

If it's a girl I have a sexual interest in I usually don't touch subjects like politics or religion.
