DailyMail: 39-year old woman shockingly discovers pregnancy is unlikely at her age

'Why does EVERYONE around you become pregnant when you're over 35 and desperate to conceive?' ASHLEY PEARSON on the pain of being the only one without a bump

How tactless of the doctors to tell her the truth:
Quote:Quote:

'As I see it, the main problem is your age,' said one rather direct OB. Occasionally, some of the insensitivity I encountered from doctors reeling off statistics about how dismal my chances of conception were due to my geriatric status - especially at a time when you feel hugely vulnerable - was shocking.

It wasn't very helpful that articles appeared daily in newspapers and magazines sharply reminding me of the negatives. I call it terrorising the older mum.

Surprise surprise, the best comment (to us) got 42 red arrows:

I'm sorry to say this but she's whining, whining, whining. The excuses most women who left it too late sound the same to me. They were focusing on their careers, partying, and choosing the bad guys over the "boring family guys" for 20 years before waking the heck up. And they rarely admit it. She might be able to have one pregnancy, if she's lucky.

Wow, what kind of people would give a truthful honest comment like that a negative red arrow. [Image: huh.gif]

It wasn't very helpful that articles appeared daily in newspapers and magazines sharply reminding me of the negatives. I call it terrorising the older mum.

'Risks of miscarriage skyrocket after 40', 'My IVF hell', 'How infertility destroyed my marriage', 'How my selfish decision to have IVF after 40 lead to my child's Down Syndrome', 'The day my baby dreams died', they went on and on.

I never found one that seemed to say anything positive... or even hopeful.

She calls this "terrorising the older mum". I call it

There are all kinds of invasive and uncomfortable tests that could be done, and I had them all. Which in some ways made it even more complicated, because I was left to wonder what was wrong.

'As I see it, the main problem is your age,' said one rather direct OB. Occasionally, some of the insensitivity I encountered from doctors reeling off statistics about how dismal my chances of conception were due to my geriatric status - especially at a time when you feel hugely vulnerable - was shocking.

I booked a series of sessions with acupuncture fertility specialist Emma Cannon.
When I met the woman herself - think glamorous and sophisticated Earth mother - I felt immediately calm.

Dubbed The Baby-Maker for her success at getting her patients pregnant, Emma combines a wealth of knowledge about Chinese medicine with cutting-edge Western developments. I was literally getting the best of both worlds.

She answered: 'The thing we know is this: women do get pregnant in their 40s, many with relative ease - what we don't always know is which ones will be successful.

'My message to women now is that you need to engage in your fertility in your 20s and 30s if you want to have children when the timing is right for you. That’s not to say you need to have your babies young, but you can take steps earlier in life to preserve health and fertility.'

For example? 'Binge drinking, so prevalent in our culture, is playing havoc with women's hormones.

'There really is no safe way to protect yourself fertility-wise if you regularly partake in that, particularly if you want to wait until later to have your babies.'

She added: 'Using condoms is another example of something you can do right now, as STIs can have a massive impact on later fertility.'

She also forgot to mention the prevalence of abortions. It isn't uncommon for an educated, attractive, middle/upper class woman to have 2 or 3 abortions in her lifetime, and that can make conception more difficult down the line.

Either way, I like what Emma has to say and, since she's a woman, there's a chance the hamsters might actually listen. Perhaps my generation will have fewer women like this author around who wait until the last minute and more who will be willing to compromise on "having it all" at an earlier age in order to have a child.

She sounds like a fool. Waiting that long to bear children drastically lessens the chance of having offspring that are healthy. The majority of mentally challenged and autistic children are born to middle aged - elderly mothers.

All the heavily downvoted comments on this thread are noting the obvious fact that fertility declines with age and perhaps you shouldn't wait till only 10 years before menopause to try conceiving. The heavily upvoted comments on this thread are the ones commiserating with the poor author who had to suffer the "shocking" "insensitivity" of a doctor noting aforementioned obvious biological fact. Feelings are more important than facts, apparently. Absolute narcissism on display here.
