Blood Sugar Levels - Advice Needed

Just had a glucose fasting test.

It is a bit high. I don't understand it, My doctor said I looked the best she has seen me in a while. I have packed on muscle, etc. I work out 6 to 7 days a week. WTF?!

Anyone ever have this problem? Were you able to bring it down? Very annoyed[Image: dodgy.gif]

Thanks in advance for suggestions on how to maybe deal with it. I have heard something about resetting insulin sensitivity, anyone done that?

Thanks.

Low carbs bro.

Only eat carbs for 1-2 meals after you've lifted weights.

Take fish oil.

Assuming there's no autoimmune issue like type 1 diabetes, that's all there is to it.

Anything by Lyle McDonald is going to help you here.
Another way to get rid of insulin resistance is fast once per week, you can do that without resorting to low carb diets and it does have a cumulative effect. You should also try to get more salt into your diet if you suspect you're low sodium (sounds nuts but true), as it has an effect on insulin sensitivity.

Low sodium status (whether dietarily-induced or caused by increased sodium loss) can also increase aldosterone, an adrenal hormone that seeks to preserve sodium in the body when it’s perceived to be scarce. High aldosterone levels are associated with insulin resistance, and aldosterone blockers are being explored as potential treatments of vascular disease and hypertension.

I have been eating more salt in the two weeks since I found that article and I'm surprised to report that my fatigue is a lot lower and I'm actually able to train harder. Probably the weirdest diet tweak I've ever done and most effective outside of zinc and intermittent fasting.

One high fasting glucose may be a spurious reading.

Test it again, and test your HBa1c (this will give you your average sugar level for the past 3 months). Then you'll have a real idea of your sugar state.

If you are taking bodybuilding supplements or steroids, stop. Supplements are sometimes spiked with sugar (and sometimes even steroids, apparently) and steroids cause insulin resistance.

hey @samsamsam, I'd recommend doing that test several times. A one-off result doesn't mean jack shit. Same thing for measuring blood pressure, testosterone levels and basically any kind of diagnostic that depends on a million factors that change daily.

But if indeed you have blood sugar issues, I highly recommend reading Mark Sisson's "Primal Blueprint". It addresses health from a fundamental, primal standpoint rather than a symptom-treating "take this supplement", "do this exercise" approach.

Although I'll agree alpha lipoic acid is an amazing supp. But if you're in good shape and have healthy insulin secretion, ALA can send you into hypoglecemia. It's a powerful insulin mimicker.

Thanks good to know on the hypoglecemia. Am looking into ALA. A lot of reading to do. Thanks everyone.
