I'm not saying you can ignore it, I'm saying it's stupid to talk about crime rate in "the USA" in a compare/contrast of countries without also considering demographics and geography, especially when people are talking about nightmare Deliverance scenarios that don't actually happen in real life (except where man bites dog or pigs fly).
The US has 313 million people. A random selection of European countries that add up to about 313 million: Germany, France, Italy, Ukraine, Poland, Bosnia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Canada is about 34 million, for reference. California alone: 38 million. There's a lot of diversity and de facto segretation in the US and if you want to talk crime you have to consider those factors.
