Identity Thief is a blow against fat acceptance

I saw Identity Thief last night and 95% of the jokes were about how the co-lead, Melissa McCarthy, is fat, impulsive, slovenly, slutty, disgusting, crass and manipulative.

The movie looks incredibly stupid but the fat shaming jokes make it tolerable.

Touche, Hollywood.

It's not enough, but a step in the right direction.

I can't believe she is Jenny McCarthy's cousin.

I'm not familiar with Bridesmaids so I couldn't tell you, but I just watched the trailer and that seems right.

McCarthy's shtick might be a good thing, because what little girl in her right mind would want to grow up like her?

Gawker has already published a whine piece saying how this movie is a setback against Fat Acceptance.

a huge problem with Identity Thief: The premise of so many of the film's jokes is that McCarthy is fat and isn't that hilarious? The film's shitty attempts to elicit laughter include her wheezing and being easily outrun when she attempts to escape Jason Bateman's character on foot, a sex scene predicated on how outrageous and nauseating it is for fat people to fuck (Bateman's character hugs himself in an adjacent bathroom for comfort) and several sight gags in which McCarthy's character's absurd sense of style is exacerbated by her proportions. The movie's poster pictures her sipping on a giant cup of obesity-causing soda. Identity Thief feebly attempts to redeem itself by giving McCarthy's titular, sociopathic character a sad past and by making her over at one point, which is supposed to hit like a revelation: Overweight people can be attractive.

2013: The rise of the manosphere and the beginning of blowback against feminism and fat acceptance? Have the bien pensants pushed American society too far with their new shtick about fat acceptance, transgender bathrooms, and free birth control for whiny sluts?

im actually curious about seeing this film now.

the crux of the problem of the fat acceptance movement is that human beings are going to make stereotypes based on how people look. ask the average person to use adjectives to describe a fat woman and you will mostly find negative words(lazy, stupid, ugly, unpopular) being used. hollywood does its fair share to perpetuate sterotypes in films. but films only have 90-120 minutes to sell the audience on characters. therefore hollywood needs to keep sterotypes in use to quickly get the audience to believe and accept the characters they present. for hollywood to suddenly try and sell fat people in a way that is totally opposite of their stereotype would frustrate audiences causing the integrity of the story and quality of the film to suffer.

I don't think my eyes could handle watching that tub of shit blown up on the big screen for two hours.

There's nothing sadder than Gawker preaching morality. From the article TheRookie linked above:

Quote:Quote:

Rex Reed describes... Melissa McCarthy as "tractor-sized," "humongous" and a "female hippo" in his Observer review of Seth Gordon's probable hit... These words are uncivil and the product of an intolerant mindset that's a huge problem in our culture. No one deserves to be referred to as such, especially not in such a public forum.

Emphasis mine. What is the very next sentence?

Rex Reed is an asshole.

So watching it now. Are there people like McCarthy's character in real life? I know I'll get shit for being naive. So self absorbed with no conscience? Indifference to other people's hurt?

I guess that would be considered a psychopath right?

And she gets picked up at a bar wtf?
