I actually think spain would have been good for me was i not on a backpackers budget, actually knew the best places to hit up, spoke better spanish and wasn't a retard at the time i went.

Yeah a low budget, no insider knowledge, no Spanish skills, and being a retard will hurt you every time in Spain.

^^ Thanks for the info Don Juan. So its pretty certain Im going to Granada next year to study Spanish for 3 or 4 months. I already have a Spanish social circle to walk into but am I doomed for a frustrating time and have to resort to hitting up exchange students? Or is there hope for a gringo with a local social circle in Granada?

Congratulations for your good taste having chosen Granada, for me it´s one of the most liveble cities in Spain. The main industry of the city is the university, one of the oldest and biggest in Spain, second is tourism so you can imagine that there will be a never ending supply of foreign students and tourists [Image: wink.gif]

There is a great social life, lots of oriental style tea places, cafes, tapas bars, restaurants... Food is great (and inexpensive compared to other parts of the country). I think if you want to hang out with Spaniards you'll have no problem to make friends with some locals or some spaniards studying or working there.

Be ready for the rite of "tapeo". To go for tapas with friends is a tradition. It´s common to go for tapas with classmates, workmates, friends... it´s a good opportunity to get to know better people you wo with or meet new ones. Often I've been out with friends for tapas and there was a group of foreign girls and I helped them (wink wink) chose the tapas, adviced them places to visit and often they joined me and my friends for a party and [Image: banana.gif] But no worries, you might meet as well a local wing man who will help you land in local girl's airfield.

Nightlife is really awesome, don´t know what's your game, but for sure you´ll find the best scene for it, from small local alternative joints to big clubs like this:

Let me add that in Granada and the rest of Western Andalusia you don't pay for the tapa. You order a beer, a wine, a grape juice or whatever (except fantas, cokes etc) and the tapa is for free. In some places they let you chose one, in others they give you a different one with every drink you order. When you go for tapas it's not like going to a MacDonalds, not only the food is better and most tasteful, but it´s a social event with lot's of opportunities if you are wise enough to see them. Another advice, use the teterias are a perfect place for your daygame, the arab decoration, the music, the incense fragance, the teas, flamenco... you can make a girl fee I play mainly with foreigners I make feel like a princess in the thousand and one nights, don´t think that would work with local girls, but might end up well with girls from other parts of Spain.

What are the best 2nd tier Spanish cities. Namely :

1) Not as expensive as 1st tier like Madrid, Barcelona

Go to the south and central Spain except Madrid. The most touristy, the most expensive.

2) Large student population

Granada, Salamanca, Valencia, Santiago de Compostela, Sevilla, Málaga, Zaragoza, Murcia

3) Easy to walk around (taxis not needed)

2nd tier spanish cities are not made for pedestrians, you need a car or the ineficient public transport. I´d say that Madrid and Barcelona are the only CITIES in Spain where you can afford to live without a car. However, Granada and Salamanca match that description. Regarding others it will deppend on your base of operations. Don´t even think of staying in the suburbs and go and come to the city center every day depending on public transport in a small city.

4) Great nightlife

Beyond Madrid and Barcelona, any touristy or universitary city has agreat night life, the biggest the university the biggest the chances that you can go out from Monday to Saturday, being Thursday the busiest day as many students go home on fridayfor the weekend.

5) Not too many tourists

Valladolid, La Coruña, Jaen, Teruel, León, Logroño, Gijón, Oviedo, Vitoria, Pamplona (except in San Fermines!)...

6) Good architecture / historic centre / good restuarants

Ronda, Segovia, Mérida, Baeza, Ávila, San Sebastián...

Hope it helps.

I´ll try to find videos and footage on Spanish nightlife for you to see and get the local perspective.

Before writting, sorry because I don´t train usually my writting english and is not as good as Don Juan´s one.
Im spanish too and I will also warn you about the sex-apocalyptic scenario you will find here

Forget your phantasies about "hot chicas", girls Penelope Cruz alikes, sangria and palm trees(well, last two things are possible...)

First of all.

Barcelona is not an usual Spainsh enviroment. Bear it in mind.

Most of atractive girls you can see on sreets you can bet that they are not locals.

Lot of people you will find clubbing in populars clubs and pubs in center, are tourist, foreigners living there, exchange students, ect. Of course there will be spanish men trying to pick up with foreigners girls too. Native girls..seldom [Image: confused.gif]

Are also people from other parts from Spain of course, included girls who feel theirselves more open to end a night in the bed of stranger´s bed , but don´t hope miracles.

As Don Juan Tenorio said, you will find a mercyless competitors for every average girl you will find in the middle of dicks´ sea. Barcelona strong point is simply that are more foreigners girls than usual, and they are whom local guys shoot too.

Situation you will find in Spain is pretty similar to the one you will find in Italy.

Anyway, my advices about places Im agree with my countrymen.

Granada, they have a large population of foreigners students and local girls in my opinion are quite nice(for spanish average) Besides even if there lot of foreigners still will be easier to merge with local people.

Santiago de Compostela is a nice hit. Nice girls, not so strong competition, and foreigners there are not as usual as mediterranean side, so foryou may be is an adventage.
But if you don´t have at least basic-normal level of spanish you will find very difficult to know girls.

In Murcia you will find quite open friendly girls and nice night atmosphere without too many foreigner men, aslo here is customory to have some rudements of spanish language.

Madrid and Valencia are ok.

North of Spain: Basque Country, Navarra, Aragon and Catalonia inside(Lleida), avoid it if you want to have some chance to have sex or..[Image: tard.gif][/quote]

To be honest Spain would be the last place on Europe where I would go to pick up girls so...my last advice is..

It deppends on the country. For example: Argentinians are very popular. They got a reputation of being liars, unreliable and overestimate themselves but yet they adore their accent and they're thought to be handsome. Girls like Cubans and guys from Uruguay as well; and I guess they've a positive view to some extente on Venezuelan and Colombians. With Mexicans and Chileans I´d say it´s neutral to positive (lots of telenovelas on tv, singers, actors, ...). With Ecuadorian, Peruvian, Bolivian, Paraguayan I´d say they've a negative to very negative perception (mainly due to the kind of immigrants that we have received from those countries during last 12 years).

Anyway, wherever you´re from, if you´re handsome, polite and smart you´ll have no problem with Spanish girls (I mean no more problems than we local guys have lol ). In fact I´ve been some guys from those countries with bad reputation who did very well here, because the girls had such a bad opinion on men from that country than when they saw they were very different to what they expected it was even easier for them to score.

One of the biggest barriers foreigners find in Spain is the lack of knowledge of foreign countries which, as a latin american you don´t have such a handicap and can go faster than any other foreigner. I´d give a try. You´re very welcome whenever you want.

Cartagena?

Almunecar?

The three of them are nice cities, Almuñecar is the smallest, it used to be a small town that lived on the fishing and agriculture, then it shifted to tourism, but not in such a hardcore way as they did in Costa del Sol. Now it´s not 100% touristic nor 100% agricultural, people are very friendly and open, girls too, my friends from the north of Spain were really surprised on how easy going they were. It doesn´t mean that you´ll fuck them the first night, but at least won´t look at you with dog face or look down on you like they do in Bilbao [Image: biggrin.gif]

Almería is ok, medium size city, with a university, lots of young people... problem? is one of the provinces of Spain where the rate male/female is higher, in other words, when you go to a club you´ll feel it smell of cock... but I´d give it a chance, not so cheap as Granada but cheaper than what you´ll find if you go up the Mediterranean Coast to Valencian Community. Maybe not Almería but you should go to some summer favourites like Mojácar, see:

Cartagena... I think it smell of cock there too (there is a base of the Spanish navy, and a politechnic university so sailors and engineers to be to compete with you) but girls are nice and friendly.

If you´re on the spot it would be worth going to more touristic places like Torrevieja, Benidorm or Alicante where if you´re smart engouh will collect some Europeans or Latin American flags [Image: wink.gif]

Just to go back to the prostitution in Spain debate from pages 1&2...

I'm not suggesting they are a problem as previously suggested ( i have no knowledge if they are a problem or not ) but they are much more noticeable then in any other Western European country I've been to ( excluding obvious red light districts of Hamburg or Amsterdam etc ). You see them standing on motorways at service stations which I've never seen anywhere else in western Europe and you see them in towns in the middle of the day and not in a run down part of town either. It can be quite funny because they often bring deck chairs and parasols and set up next to traffic lights or round abouts. A skanky pro reading a magazine on a deck chair waiting to be picked up,that is not something you see in any other country I've been to in w.Europe. That tells me that they are accepted by society in some way,far more so then in the UK for example.

I remember reading an article somewhere about Europe's largest brothel opening up in Spain, on the border with France.

Edit, an article:

Quote:Quote:

Europe's biggest brothel The Paradise brothel opened 150 prostitutes in La Jonquera Girona Spain

The Paradise night club, touted as the biggest brothel in Europe, has opened for business after a Spanish town La Jonquera Girona failed to stop it in the courts. ONE of Europe's largest brothels has opened in northeastern Spain, employing up to 150 prostitutes, the Spanish press said on Friday.

Strange, I have never seen this.

Never seen a hooker at a motorway in Spain, or "lounging around in nice parts of town" in vast hordes.

I have probably spent a year and a half of my life in Spain, maybe more (since I was 16).

Where did this take place?

Firstly why have you completely changed what I said? Point out where I wrote "lounging around in nice parts of town" or in vast hordes. I said they are not confined to rundown parts meaning red light districts. Never
said vast hordes as you implied either.

To answer where I've seen them: Barcelona ( end of the night hanging round clubs hoping to be picked up ),Lloret De Mar,Tossa De Mar,Alicante, random motorways but especially up near the French border,Girona..........need I go on?

If I saw them on four short trips,I'm surprised you never in 18 months.

More, an article from the NY Times earlier this year, I remember reading it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/07/world/...wanted=all

Quote:Quote:

While the rest of Spain’s economy may be struggling, experts say that prostitution — almost all of it involving the ruthless trafficking of foreign women — is booming, exploding into public view in small towns and big cities.

Quote:Quote:

But the boom here, experts say, is powered in large part by the desires of young men — many of them traveling in packs for the weekend — taking advantage of Europe’s cheap and nearly seamless travel.

“The young used to go to discos,” said Francina Vila i Valls, Barcelona’s councilor for women and civil rights. “But now they go to brothels. It’s just another form of entertainment to them.”

Could be.

I do love so many aspects of the place, even though I have never claimed it being an easy place to swoop girls.

So that says something in and of itself.

Not to beat a dead horse or something, but it really does blow my mind when there is prostitution talk about Spain.

And trust me, I am the kind of guy that gets solicited.

Spain just doesn't register anywhere near the top for me, from what I have seen with prostitution.

I hear you G....I love the culture and lifestyle of Spain too. Just that the women IMO are a pain in the ass (similar to Argentine girls), so that is why I haven´t gone back .
Concerning prostitution in Spain, it isnt as in your face as in Bangkok, Manila, or the red light district in Amsterdam..... but it is definitely there, as confirmed by some of us who have lived there and Spanish guys on the forum.

Vorkuta has described the situation perfectly, as he says in the industrial areas, day and night, in some areas of the outskirts of any big or medium sized city, and sometimes even in the very city. For example, Real Madrid supporters moke F.C. Barcelona fans because the streets around Camp Nou are the place chosen by shemales to sell their stuff.

As Vorkuta says it´s weird, the bring chairs, magazines; in summer they have parasols and in winter they light fires with scrap wood and pallets [Image: exclamation.gif] Don´t take my word:

Take a look at this map to see different attitudes in Europe to the business:

Green: Legal and regulated
Blue: Not illegal, not regulated
Red: Illegal

In Spain there is a legal gap, they won´t prosecute girls nor clientes for selling/buying that service, but for doing it in public. In the begining they´d fine whores, but they realised they never paid their fines [Image: biggrin.gif] the bitches have no bank accounts or properties whatsoever; send the money to their countries, keep it home in plastic bags or who knows. Then there is a busy brothel industry, like the famous ones in La Junquera which are a magnet for Frenches.

And escorts of course:

As you may have noticed the overwhelming majority of the girls and people working around the business are foreigners.

During the sixties Spaniards would go to South France to get laid and buy porn, watch X movies etc, now the frogs are coming over to bang some hookers, ironic, isn´t it?

Prostitution is not socially accepted, if a man run up a reputation of having sex with hookers he will be marginated by women and can be 100% sure he won´t be able to bang a normal girl that knows him (captain obvious speaking).

From point of view men that need to hire professionals for sex are loosers and I hope I´ll never have to do it, anyway if you like that or want to try it my advice is AVOID street hookers, no matter how good looking they're or how much you want it. Apart from real risk of sexual transmission dissease there is an extra risk that while she is polishing your sword she will be emptying your pockets and you might find out she took your wallet and your mobile phone or in a most extreme casehijack your car. According to what they say in forums and what you hear on tv there are gangs of Nigerians, Romanians and Bulgarians specialized in that. Just google for relax and the name of the city where you are or if your budget is not limited try escort + city.

I guess that explains it.

I completely missed it, I definitely wasn't hanging out in Camp Nou at night, or in strange sparsely populated industrial parks during the day.

Still, three hookers spread out on a motorway doesn't seem to compare to the other cities I mentioned.
