July 2012: Hottest Month on Record

Whether you believe that it's caused by human activity or not, this shit is a little alarming.

(Full story, including video.)

Quote:Quote:

NOAA: July 2012 was the Hottest Month on Record

In more than 117 years of records, July 2012 stands alone as not only the hottest July on record in the lower 48 United States, but also the hottest of any month on record in that time span. To put it another way, July 2012 was the hottest of more than 1,400 months that we've gone through since 1895.

The report released by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on Wednesday says that July 2012 surpassed the previous record hottest month set in July 1936. That year was during the middle of the very dry and hot Dust Bowl era. Senior Meteorologist Stu Ostro (Twitter) says, "Exceeding July 1936 at the peak of the Dust Bowl heat -- is BIG."

July was definitely a brutal month. I don't doubt the claim that it was the hottest on record either. The past year has been incredibly warm as well. I don't remember a winter as warm as the one this year.

Guys, let me tell you:

Global warming might suck balls for the rest of the world, but it's great for New England!

In the hood summertime is the killing season, it's hot up in this bitch, that's a good enough reason.

I would like to present this article for consideration by forum members. It has 5 pages so it's a longer read, but please give just the first page a try and see if it interests you. In short, if we are not yet critically fucked, at the current pace, it's about to happen very soon.

The phase of Earth's climate that humans have enjoyed is a rare occurance. We're technically still in an ice age and we're transitioning out of it, to who knows where. The Earth has sustained much higher temperatures and DRASTICALLY different chemistry than what we know today.

Not saying we don't have anything to do with it. But the earth has had much higher concentrations of CO2 and methane gas before. The earth will be a much different place, but it'll be fine. We might not be.

While I acknowledge that climate change (more on my reason for that emphasis later) exists and is at least in part driven by human action, I'm not buying into hysteria.

Firstly, I don't like the term global warming. It conveys about half the story.
Average temperatures may rise in many parts of the planet, but they may cool or remain stagnant in many others. This is a very complex phenomenon, the implications of which we do not entirely understand yet. Simply saying "its gon' get hot!" is inadequate, and that is what the term "global warming" implies.

One dynamic that I find is very rarely mentioned in the media is the potential disruption of thermohaline circulation. You can read that wiki for full details, but to keep it short: disrupt ocean currents due to cryosphere melting, create cooling in large parts of northern hemisphere, see ice masses rejuvenate themselves again and sea levels potentially decline in some parts of the world, etc.

Again, there's a lot that could go on here (that is merely one plausible theory), and it is not as simple as implying that it will get hot. Warming can beget cooling, and vice versa.

And that's the second thing-uncertainty. There is a lot we do not know about the climate (ex: how exactly do clouds impact cryosphere melting, exactly how much warming do humans contribute, how exactly will the effect vary in different regions, etc, etc-our best models are very imperfect).
This does not mean that nothing can or should be done-we can agree that humanity is contributing to the issue to some extent, and that whatever extent this is should be reduced.

But this does mean that forceful, concrete conclusions about the results and the associated hysteria are not necessarily called for. There will be serious challenges, but humanity is not going to go down the drain at the behest of this phenomenon.

I totally agree Athlone. I don't really know what the fuck is going on with the climate, and I don't think anyone else does either.

Either way, I love to piss people off and tell them how much I love global warming. I used to tell my environmentalists in college that I left my car running, drove around in circles, and set bushes on fire to help make the world a warmer place and end the horrible New England winters.

The old rednecks here say Florida didn't used to be hot and didn't have bugs. The Yankees brought it here. Anyway I'm not noticing this year being too hot.

I wouldn't say New England winters are horrible unless you're living up in the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Where I'm at on the coast, it's quite mild throughout the year.

Outside of that though, I don't see any pressing problem with climate change considering the climate has been changing since the birth of our planet(see this for a nice overview). Typically, life on Earth not only adapts but also changes the composition of the biosphere to better suit itself(ie. Earth's version of homeostasis brought to you by life). Simply, more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere traps heat but also increases evaporation which leads to more cloud cover which reflects sunlight away from the Earth. This increased evaporation also would lead to increased precipitation overall which would allow more vegetation in previously arid areas. Let me finish this by saying that I am by no means a climatologist and that these are what I believe and might not be explicitly factual.

I'll believe in global warming/climate change/whatever they call it next week when they can put out an accurate weather report. Can't tell me if it's going to rain tomorrow but in 20 years they know our climate will be radically different because I drove a car half my life? Riiiight...

.... This is the kind of thinking that led us to this situation in the first place. The scientific proof for global warming is massive.

Two years ago there was so much snow the snowbanks I couldn't open my car doors. The snowbanks were so high most snow blowers couldn't get the snow over them.

Last winter, there was no snow. That the was the first time in my life I've ever witnessed something like that. If that's what global warming brings, then god am I lucky as hell to be here.

Exactly, one day it's an imminent ice age, the next it's global warming, and now it's this mysterious climate change. Take your pick, slap some "science" together and see how many suckers you can scare.

They can't give an accurate 10 day weather forecast but a logical man is supposed to believe they know what it's going to be like in 10, 20, 30 years? I'm not buying it.

It's called weather, now get on with your life.

Yeah, environmentalists will then say that "weather" and "climate" are different, and we can use different models to predict them because they are different. So even if we can't predict the weather we can still predict the climate.

I'll then retort by saying that I agree there's a difference, but that we still don't know anything about either of them. Then they get really really pissed off

Haha, I am definitely going to use that. They say weather isn't climate, until there's a heat wave or a blizzard or a hurricane. Remember we were supposed to have nothing but super storm hurricanes every year after Katrina? Still waiting.

It's funny how people say that science has already proved these theories, yet they never have any proof and if you press them about it they throw a fit instead of speaking facts. Or tell you you're too stupid to understand.

When your argument is based on trying to make someone feel guilty instead of using logic you've failed.

Science cannot prove anything. It can only disprove things. Always remember that, and you'll never be conned by people talking about shit "in the name of science".

Who is coming up with this nonsense that we can't predict the weather? Have any of you even taken a basic meteorology class in college? Weather predictions are localized phenomena and are highly accurate up to about 5 days, after which it becomes increasingly less so.

Furthermore, climate change models are based on a long range of verifiable past data. We can see the cycles of climate earth goes through going back millions of years by taking ice core and geological samples. We can then start to see these patterns and how rapidly they occur. We know as fact that the planet is heating up at a rate that is faster than can be explained by natural processes.

I really can't believe all the climatology denial STILL going on. Or that people are behaving as though climatology is a pseudo-science.

I think there is some circular logic going on here. It seems like it's being argued that just because it was the hottest month on record, it has nothing to do with longer term climate dynamics, or that humans aren't causing it. Then how can you say we can't say anything about the future? It's well-established that heat will go up, not what the exact effects of that temperature increase will be. What those effects will be is still an open question, though I would bet the farm that the net result will be something that displaces our current mode of existence.

I would ask you, what's more likely, all the compounds we produce that trap heat from the sun, something called the green house effect, or is it just the weather, it blows all over the fuckin place?

It's not some conspiracy theory to impinge on your liberties.

Still waiting to hear some facts... is it an ice age, global warming or climate change I should be trembling in fear from? Or the sun going supernova in a few thousand years?

It was hot this summer, I agree. The last time it was this hot was 1936. So how hot is it going to be in 2088? Is it going to be one degree hotter every year between now and then (a 76 degree rise)? Half a degree hotter? A quarter? If it's well established that heat will rise then shouldn't it already be 125 degrees every day? And where and when was all this well established, an al gore movie?

I used to believe in this until it turned out that "scientists" were just making it all up as they went along in order to keep the gravy train rolling. What Samseau said is dead on, "science cannot prove anything. It can only disprove things."
