back in the 90's i was a professional underground dj for about four years. i played strictly vinyl and still have my turntables and about 2000 records.

i played all the big 'rave' parties and some of the legendary clubs like buzz and parties like ultraworld. i placed second in a national dj competition hosted by at the time the biggest, most well known (international) club night in america - FEVER.

i am also trained in classical music, like violin, piano and percussion.

i can tell you without a doubt that properly dj'ing a big night in a club with 500-2000 people is as much a musical performance as playing in a band or an instrument. in fact, it is its own challenge. people have different expectations. you have to have a real feel for programming and then the skills to make it happen.

today's djs are much less talented i do believe but that list posted basically includes the original OG DJ badasses that came from the late 80's /early 90's. Paul Oakenfold? Dude was opening for U2 in front of 90,000 people in 1995. Sasha and Digweed? Residencies in NYC while living in the UK in the 90's. These guys are massive commercial enterprises, not just DJ's.

I bought Ableton and Serato and know how to use them and it really does make things a lot, A LOT easier. Its just not the same anymore.

DJ'ing in the 90's was "the day" of "back in the day."

I wonder what Hollywood celeb types like the late DJ AM, and that dike that was licking Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Ronson pull down in a year. They basically play functions for their industry friends, so I'm curious what they pay them. I've met Tendaji Lathan (brother of actor Sanaa Lathan), who also DJs around LA.

The only DJ that works internationally that I've met personally is Tony Touch. He does a regular night at Sutra Lounge in NYC, and works mostly in NY I think, but works in Miami also. He does some international gigs, and has CDs out.

As long as you can keep the celebs thinking that you are in front of them, that their hipness is somehow controlled by you, the money and opps will flow.

DJing

what a great career while contributing nothing to society. LOL. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I could. Hell what is stopping any of us from doing it? Why not?

Is entertainment a contribution to society? If DJs provide a form of entertainment, then they are useful. Just because they aren't curing disease doesn't mean they aren't contributing something.

Interesting story, from the guy who assisted a DJ in Indy.

We talk about game, looks, money and everything else, when it comes to attracting women. Really, it all boils down to two things, status and access:

1. Are there girls?
2. Do they think you're cool?

Game is that extra spice of dominance that makes you smoother, sexier and weaselly enough to close. If something doesn't help you answer 'yes' to those two questions, it's probably not helping you get laid. As I said in another thread, the guys banging some of the hottest girls with the least effort in LA and this country as a whole are just fratboys and college athletes.

As for DJing, even if it is supremely easy, the odds that you'll do well are probably pretty low. It's also such a funny commentary on women and society, that the men most feted with our greatest pleasure, sex with attractive girls, is given to the least productive men. Hell, at least Lord Byron was a terrific writer. Maybe I should finger human nature instead of society, but either way, it's morbidly comical.

I'm surprised Roosh has commented on this thread at all seeing how he used to DJ many moons ago. Any good stories / was it worth it?

DJing is one of those skills where its a lot harder than it looks....seriously. And you have to keep your ear to the street and know what people want to hear; you cant just play songs that you like. REAL DJs know how to mix records, scratch, "bring it back" on a dime, utilize drum machines and some are also actual music producers.

With damn near everything in life, you gotta crawl before you walk and most DJs start out at the bottom and get shitted on by party promoters and whomever else that doesnt take them serious while trying to come up and make a name for themselves.

Theres a lot more to DJing that the untrained eye doesnt see. They deserve whatever rewards they are getting.

Thing is, even small local DJs often have hot girlfriends. I was at this loft party on Saturday. There was a DJ spinning a combination of 80s and electro. I actually liked his selection quite a bit and asked who he was and if he has a residency somewhere. He has no residency and is pretty much unknown in the city. Yet his girl was one of the hottest chics at the party. Come to think of it, I don't remember the last time I met ANY DJ that has an ugly or fat girlfriend. What does that tell you?

That weekend definitely opened my eyes to women's weird brains. They were looking for the status guy, which gave me access.

And the girls we invited back to the hotel suite were handpicked. We handed them passes. They were college students, a bank teller etc. Not strippers or other scum. They would have never been the freaks on the hamster thread.

In fact, these two girls we gaves passes showed up with a fatty friend. My friend said "Passes only." I couldn't do it. But I did get a chuckle out of it. The two hot chicks conferred and get this ... they told the fatty they would call her when they needed to picked up.

I'm a little bummed that I'm missing Kaskade(my fav DJ) live at Staples' Center right now, but I was just looking at the docu-video of his tour in Brazil last year. Man, I can imagine no better lifestyle in the world for a young man than international DJ.

This guy came to our town but he goes all over Japan and Korea. Basically just DJ's and has pretty girls dance, and host the BIKINKINIGHT event, must be a nice job.

I bet that I could run and mix a better set than that. I've played with DJ gear approximately once.
