To be honest, since I believe it is best not to mess around at the gym (and try to pick up chicks), I just wear whatever. I am in pretty good shape not 10% bf, but who cares how I look. I am there to do my work (which I enjoy a great deal) and get out.
If your goal is to try to pick up chicks at the gym, by all means wear something that shows off the body, but then of course, you might start getting into situations which you might not want.
The face mask may be the one that restricts breathing. It is to help crank up endurance. I have seen a couple of boxers use them.
