Second night in Cambodia turned out quite a bit mellower. Wasn't even planning to go out but sucked down a few beers while messing around on my laptop rooshing and catching up on work emails. Then I walked down to the party area (Pub Street) and ran into the tuk tuk drivers that helped me out the night before. They were sitting at a table drinking suds with two policemen. They hollered for me to go join them and I sat down and had a few. The cops diidn't come across as quite so arrogant as the ones in Thailand but I imagine it's still a good idea to keep your distance.
It became apparent pretty quickly after the cops took off that everyone wanted me to foot the bill on future beers. Pretty strapped for cash at the moment so it was time for me to move on.
Went and got some food and then ended up at this late night tourist bar a block away from my room. At this point I had 0% interest in landing a bird for the night. After the night before I was looking forward to sleeping alone and getting up to get some work done. But alas it seems the Cambodian girls had other ideas because I ended up getting pushed into a shore anyways. LOL
This girl was actually very hot, in contrast to the ones from the night before that I had the issues with. When she first came in she tried to strike up a convo and I kind of blew her off as I was flirting with the bartender, who turned out to be engaged. This kind of pissed her off and she started making digs at me and
I began wondering if it was going to become an ugly scene - I get those every once in a while in Thailand when I come across as arrogant to bargirl.
But after a while she cut the bullshit and sort of started throwing herself on me and eventually told me she wanted me to come sleep with her. I actually tried to turn her down, telling her multiple times I was going to sleep alone and that I didn't pay. She kept telling me not to worry and throwing her arms around me, etc. She was quite a stunner, actually, and all the backpackers and Cambodian guys alike were checking her out. I even told her what happened the night before with the other girl and that I didn't believe it would be free. She was getting really whiny at this point, essentially begging me to come with her and saying we weren't going to have sex or anything. We all know what that means.
Don't get me wrong - I'm no Fisto. But I'm not bad-looking either, and I think it was just driving her nuts that I was turning her down.
So I ended up going with her - yep, twist my arm. Things started getting a bit goofy for me at this point. I was starting to wonder if she was a ladyboy and that perhaps I'd just had a few too many fifty cent beers. It's not that she wasn't super sexy and feminine but she kind of had that toned and plastic look some of the katoeys have and the way she was coming on so strong had my radar up. She was real done up too. And on top of that, every single Cambodian we walked by was staring at us, some grinning, and this is the main tourist area so it's not like farangs with local girls are unheard of by any means.
I asked her straight out if she was a ladyboy and she insisted not. I even stopped a tuk tuk driver who was walking by and asked him under my breath (lol) and he backed her up, though he was looking at her like she had heard or something so wasn't sure if I could count on it. At this point I was pretty paranoid but decided to trust my initial instincts and ride it out. On the way to a hotel on her motorbike though, every single person we passed was staring at us. The men and women both. It was really weird and I was almost certain I had an unpleasant surprise in the near future.
Checked into a room and it got even worse. Every time I went to feel her tits or put my hand between her legs she clammed up and pushed my hand away. As many of you know, this is a dead giveaway for a chick that's a dude. I was really convinced by now that I'd fucked up, but I'm all in at this point so I want to know for sure. And I keep listening to her voice and studying her mannerisms and all my Thailand experience says she's a chick - I'm pretty good at spotting the latter.
Then she started breaking the titties out. Okay, very small, a notch or two above flat-chested - and it's dark so I'm still not sold - hormones? lol Finally got the real story later on when the legs finally opened. 100% girl, thank Buddha. Definitely not a chop job either.
Anyways, we slept most of the day away and she was getting all dreamy-eyed by the end, even though she'd already told me about her foreign boyfriend, and then she took off to go to work some discoteque and "work." No money ever mentioned - good girl. When she took off she dropped her number and kept lingering at the door like she didn't want to go. I always find it strange when these prostitutes seem to fall so quickly. Can't tell if it's all part of the act or they're just not used to fooling around with a guy who doesn't value their pussy enough to pay for it.
More observations here in Siem Reap as compared to Thailand.
I really like the Cambodian look. As I mentioned before, a lot of them are barely so-so, but the good-looking ones are super good-looking. It's a real exotic look to some of them that looks to me like a mix between Thai and Indian - which doesn't make much sense since India is over on the other side of Thailand. Maybe Thai and Nepalese would be more on point, but those two countries still don't border... Most have darker skin, which I don't usually like on Asian girls, but with these ones it seems to work. I did meet a couple Cambodian bargirls over the years in Thailand and they were usually stunners, so I suppose this shouldn't have been as much of a surprise as it has been.
As a caveat though I have been on Samui the last four months though and the talent isn't much to write home about there, so maybe that's thrown my judgement off. We'll see how I think about it when I make my way back to BKK and Chiang Mai.
The guys seem a lot more physical. Not towards foreigners but with each other. It seems I'm constantly looking up to find a couple guys in the bar, restaurant, or street roughhousing a bit or maybe just throwing a few fake punches or kicks at each other. I get the sense that they would be no joke whatsoever in a street-fight. Girl was telling me too that she avoids screwing rich Cambodians because when they get mad at their woman they'll often just have them offed. She may have just been flapping the gums, but I know it's pretty wild out here, so I'm not throwing the notion completely out the window.
Cambodian girls do seem to really be sprung on Westerners, as is expected with the financial disparities, but I get the feeling it's more than just that. You constantly catch the waitresses, for instance, staring at you. They seem real shy but it's like they can't walk by without fixating on your face, and when you catch their eyes or smile at them, they break out in this really big smile, kind of embarrassed-like. Something about the smile too - it seems more genuine than the Thai smile. Hard to describe but as many of you know, the Thai smile is often nothing more than a mask. Here it just feels more warm and genuine, from the men and women alike.
As an example, I stopped one girl at my table a few minutes ago and tried to chat her up and even though her English was shit and her Thai only manageable, she didn't seem to want to leave. I sort of tried to excuse her a couple times and she just stood there hovering over me with this goofy smile on her face. And this is in a restaurant that's full of backpackers 24/7 so it's not like these people never see foreigners.
Given some time, I think I'd start feeling like a celebrity here. lol
On touts. The people are really aggressive about selling you stuff here in the center. I've had a couple guys follow me for about half a block trying to sell me stuff and women stand right out in front of my path to force me to stop and talk to them. The women I usually juke around and sometimes push them into each other, which gets them giggling. A couple of the guys I've actually had to stop and tell them to please not follow me because I don't like being followed. I try not to be a dick when I say this and shake their hand and say thanks so as not to come across as intimidating them.
Once you do blow people off, though, they seem to be really good-natured about it. So it's annoying but I think the key is to just turn it into a laugh or ignore completely.
I'm the type of person who sometimes when being hounded will stop and engage a guy in conversation when he's trying to sell me something, ask him where he's from or about his shirt if he's sporting something slick or whatever. Most people wouldn't have the patience to do this, but I just ignore whatever they're selling and talk to them like a person. If they keep trying to turn the conversation back I'll just say "look I'm not going to buy anything" and change the subject again, or I'll just keep going if they fail to get the hint.
People really seem to appreciate it when you do this, and I often get to know shopkeepers up and down the block in neighborhoods where I stay. To the point where I feel certain if I got jumped in that particular area I'd be well taken care of. When you get on their level, they're just like anyone else and care about the same basic things in life - getting fed, making bread, scoring head, etc.
Drinking. When sipping brews with Cambodian guys you are supposed to cheers before every...single...drink. It gets old quick, but I find it interesting how drinking customs vary from country to country. In Laos, for instance, it's not uncommon for the group to have one glass among them and they drink one at a time, refilling the glass and passing around the circle from one person to the next. One of the tuk tuk drivers said they actually do that here with whiskey - just not with beer.
Cop tells me opening a business here is easy - which I've read already. There's also a british guy working in the restaurant I'm in and a lot of foreign-owned bars and restaurants.
Lots of dumb-ass farangs out here. To be expected, I suppose, but I can already see they get away with shit here that the Thais wouldn't stand for. My sense is that the Cambodians have a real inferiority complex when it comes to whites, so they often just take shit with a smile and zero pause. I've seen this inferiority complex rear it's head in a lot of different ways. In the bar last night, this one guy was standing there above a table of foreigners he was drinking with doing some kind of fire-swallowing trick. No one gave a shit and everyone at the table was ignoring him and trying to hit on some girl or another, but this guy just didn't get it. He was aiming for tips too but there was this really needy vibe to him like he wanted some kind of acceptance from the farang too, and was failing hard.
A lot of the locals speak or understand Thai. It's come in handy when speaking with the ones who don't speak English. The Khmer language sounds nothing like Thai to me though.
Will drop more observations later. Kind of in a jam as my money ran out today and I'm still waiting for some more to hit my account within the next couple days and going to have to contact a friend back home to make sure I keep a roof over my head until I get paid. Another day in the life.
