Vegan here. I personally don't care about animals at all. I love meat and used to eat a lot of it while bulking and working out consistently since the age of 17.
Decided to just do it as an experiment and holy f, after 2 months of it, I felt like a completely changed person. More positive and energetic, less anxiety and fearful of certain situations (*cough* meeting girls), surprisingly even gained weight, maintained muscle mass, use the bathroom less (went from a lot of stomach problems to almost NIL), don't need as much sleep (which is weird since I'm aging), notice better skin as well. The no dairy+eggs component helped tremendously too since I'm lactose intolerant anyway.
Honestly, it's changed my life and I recommend whoever may be interested to just try it out for a week. If you like it, stretch it out further to a month. If you don't like it, go back to your previous diet.
I did a straight vegan diet for almost two years... these were my observations...
Good
- Lost weight relatively easily
- Learned how to cook a bunch of crazy tasty shit using only vegetables (everyone should own a vegan cookbook)
- Cooked all the time
- Ate a lot of vegetables and even joined a farm share
- Learned a lot about the environment, ecosystems, sustainable farming, etc.
Bad
- Got really bad inflammation, and even developed carpal tunnel syndrome in my left hand
- Low libido and low T
- Made every single meal out a pain in the ass, whether it be a ballgame, family dinner, or a date (why yes, I do know that french fries cooked in vegetable oil are "vegan" but that does not make them healthy)
- Was a total weakling at the gym
- Having to explain why I do not choose to eat certain foods at just about every single social event. (Though I still sort of have to do this when declining donuts, cake, etc.)
What works best for me is a modified pescatarian diet, with some meat in moderation. Zero dairy due to lactose intolerance. I cook with ghee, olive oil, and good lard.
When I go out, I'll usually order from the fish or salad end of things. I feel better when I eat meat and a certain amount of saturated fat. I try and cook with a lot of coconut oil and bone broth.
In my opinion, vegan diets are way better than a standard American diet (muffins, McDonalds, pasta, etc.), but I don't think they hold up to paleo diet, particularly for males.
Your milage may vary.
