A Chinese airline has reportedly warned passengers that "precautions" should be taken when visiting areas in London mainly populated by "Indians, Pakistanis and black people".

Air China included the comments as part of a feature in its in-flight magazine on visiting the city.

It also advised tourists not to go out alone at night, and for females to always be accompanied when travelling.

A London MP has written to the Chinese ambassador to the UK for an apology.

The comments were noticed by Beijing-based producer Haze Fan from US news channel CNBC.

They were published in its monthly Wings Of China magazine and read: "London is generally a safe place to travel, however precautions are needed when entering areas mainly populated by Indians, Pakistanis and black people.

"We advise tourists not to go out alone at night, and females always to be accompanied by another person when travelling."

That's nothing, my parents had some Japanese house guests years ago and they were afraid to go outside into a middle class suburb because they thought they'd get mugged in America.

Not really. There are other ethnic populations in London that form neighbourhoods that could be considered unsafe, but this article played it safe and simply mentioned the three groups of people that Chinese have particular distaste for.

This is a propagation of personal biases, not a deeply seated desire to "call it as it is."

The Air China person who wrote that article is a fucking moron. I doubt he or she has interacted with any black or brown people in London for more than a few minutes.

A lot of Chinese have very little knowledge about Indians living in the west. Just because most of India is a third world shithole with a lot of poverty, a lot of Chinese assume that Indians living in western countries are also poor. It blows their minds (and Chinese pride) when they find out that the average Indian in the west is wealthier than the average Chinese.

Pakistani areas are mostly OK too. Even with black populations it depends on the area. Issues of poverty and crime are more related to class than ethnicity in UK. Most chavs are white.

The journalist who exposed this (Haze Fan) lived in UK for a year, so she would have a better understanding of what's going on.

The Chinese don't exactly hold back and I can't see them apologising anytime soon, they don't care about 'outrage'.

I would say the statement is partially correct, ethnic minority areas in London and in general the U.K do have higher crime rates. Indian areas not so much however, despite places like Southall having the appearance of being run down. Pakistani and Afro Caribbean areas do have high crime, same applies for the Bengali community in East London too. A lot of Brits who live outside of London make reference to 'chavs', basically a nick name for the white underclass. But they aren't really prominent in London, perhaps in the more suburban areas. However the stabbings, shootings and serious crime usually happens in ethnic minority areas and are usually committed by ethnic minorities. This is not just coming from studying crime statistics in London over the years, but actually living and working here first hand.

Of course people can point to exceptions, and take these statements personally. The journalist in question probably made some black or Indian friends while studying at university and maybe had a conversation with the friendly Jamaican lady who operates the train turnstiles on the way to work. The article needs to have her make a comment as well, to confirm that there are still 'progressive' young Chinese people who don't conform to these outdated ideas.

Yes it is true, class plays a bigger role than race in the U.K, probably the only factor that trumps class will be culture and religion but that is a topic for another time. Even though people love to point out the short comings of the white underclass in the U.K because they are so dysfunctional. But in terms of crime rates and level of violence even the poorest white communities can't really be compared to the ethnic minority areas in big English cities.

Some exceptions perhaps like Salford and East Glasgow, however it will be very difficult to find comparable areas to say Newham, Tower Hamlets, Lambeth, Lewisham, Haringey' when it comes to crime and the seriousness of crime in these places.

Obviously I can see why this article is offensive, but what the journalist is saying, isn't exactly incorrect or out of order. The most dangerous areas in London where you are more likely to become a victim of crime, will be the ethnic minority areas. I don't think it would be offensive if they were to advise Chinese tourists to avoid certain pubs and clubs that are frequented by white working class drunken geezers either. Nobody is suggesting that you can't find or meet friendly Black, Indian or Pakistani people in the Capital.

I cannot speak on London's ethnic areas, but I know Chinese people well enough to know they bring most of that on themselves. They STILL carry thousands of dollars in cash on their person while traveling, as if they are still in China.

Remember last year when the French government had to start warning Chinese tourists that carrying 10,000 USD in a fanny pack around Paris, just basically causes the thieves to follow them out of the airports?

Sometimes it takes two to get robbed. One is a piece of scum, the other a fool completely ignorant or too incompetent to research how other countries work.

My wife has an acquaintance that was flying to the US for the first time. Chick took over 30,000 in cash with her and got stuck in customs.... Yeah, you heard that right. A quick Google search could have told her that you cannot legally walk around with more than 10K in the USA.

This isn't telling it like it is. This is a half-truth at best. This is very likely ethnocentric arrogance of not conforming to the customs of a place you are traveling to.

We have a Canadian Border Services reality TV show and the Chinese always show up in Vancouver carrying dead ducks, rotting fish or a hundred packs of smokes in their luggage and are shocked when told that they can't bring that stuff into our country.

True enough, but you'd have to suspect that such a law exists in order to be curious about researching it. To someone from a different type of society, a law like this one wouldn't even occur to them.

I'm a foreigner where I live and I've run into similar issues at times. Want to cancel your gym membership or your cable TV? You have to bring a letter in person; you can't just call or tell them verbally and sign a form. Want to update some information on your bank account? You need to do that at the specific branch where you opened it, not over the phone or at a different branch. These things seem obvious to locals, but someone from a place with a different system wouldn't even guess that the procedure might be so different.

I might walk around with 200 dollars at the most in my wallet in the US. Maybe the occasional 300. That's with carrying a handgun. Anymore than that, and I refuse. The risk is too high in my opinion. 200 hundred dollars might be way too risky in some European countries. Pickpockets and muggers cannot be shot there, like I could do here. Heck you might not even be legally allowed to chase them and fight them for your money back! Would Canada allow you to chase a wallet thief and punch him into giving your money back?

A few people in China warned me not to keep my phones in my pockets because of pickpockets on the subway are allegedly so good, you cannot feel it. As a result I usually keep mine with my passport in a pouch inside my pants. If they want to steal my phone they will have to tickle my balls in the process.

They risk having phones snatched, but walking around with a giant bank bag (with large characters that say Bank of China) with 20K down the street is OK. China is weird as hell like that. They take this mindset with them outside the country as well. Smart ones get a credit card, but many refuse to carry plastic because they only trust cash and are stubborn. Like Scotian says they will attempt to bring all kinds of crazy stuff with them.

I lost count of how many times I have seen them forced to throw food away they brought on a carryon. Like Scotian says, their bewilderment is hilarious. It's like their arrogance cannot believe you are preventing them from bringing food into another country. The flight attendants try hard to pass instructions or dig into their things to show them what is allowed, but even then, some will ignore the attendants. That's why the government and this magazine are doing what they are doing.

Food is one thing, but we talking about money here. Getting robbed. Money is lifeblood. Every country has robbers, even China. Every traveler has a responsibility to do their own research to find out what will get you robbed for, in which countries. Even 50 dollars is enough to get robbed for in the wrong area of a 1st world country. Expensive watches can be a no-no, even if all you have is plastic credit cards.

Last time I traveled outside of China I had an issue with my Chinese bank card not working at ATMs. Before my most recent trip, I went to the bank to get a new card that would have no issue with it being read by foreign machines. Anyway, the woman at the bank couldn't understand why I just didn't want to withdraw all the money from my bank account before exiting China and just carrying it with me during my holiday.

It's not a "struggle".

Many conservative cultures around the world have deep-seated stereotypes against certain groups. I'd say in most parts of the world, this is called "normal". Not every culture promotes this multi-cultural utopian vision bullshit.

Everyone has stereotypes, and that's their human right. Don't like it? Don't go to China and don't fly on that airline.

It's refreshing for me to see a billion-dollar company allow material like this to reach their consumers. The world could use a little more DGAF attitude.
