The 6920 is an excellent example of the class and I would posit the standard to which others try and emulate.
Ive had nearly every pattern of modern military style rifle over the years. I would stay away from the AK family for several reasons.
1. Most of the parts are of foreign make and could in theory be prevented from being imported at any time with "reinterpretations" of statutes as BATF is known to do. In contrast 99%+ of the AR market is domestic to the US.
2. The manual of arms is not as easy to learn. Things like the safety, bolt hold open, poor sights, and mag changes are all inferior to the AR style. You can of course overcome these with training, but that is further down the line for a beginner.
3. While you can get an AK in 5.56x45 (Arsenal SLR-106), the 7.62x39 round is also subject to whims of regulation. Im sure some of the gun guys here remember Clinton stopping the import of Chinese steel core ammo in the 90's. Or was it Bush I? The antis are realizing that a frontal assault on the pillars of the 2A is a lose/lose for them so they are trying to sneak around and hit with flanking attacks by regulating transfers, ammo, components, etc. so making sure your logistics are solid is also very prudent in these times. What is plentiful now will not always be so.
4. 'Murica baby! There are 2 types of countries in this world. Those who use the metric system, and those who have been to the moon.
Just had to throw that last bit in there. You're going to need 5+ magazines (about $6-9/ea) and some ammo to start off, 1000 rd cases are running
$309@SGAmmo so do factor those additional purchases into your cost matrix. With all the events in the world today, as well as the state of weapons manufacturing in the US there has never been a better time to get into guns.
