The new workout shoes I fucks with
02-25-2015, 07:54 PM
I've got hundreds of miles of running in Vibrams under my belt and I don't wear them anymore.
On the plus side, they really are very effective at forcing you to "unfuck" your heelstrike running. Since transitioning to midfoot strike I run without pain and could write a massive post on races I've done. Nothing particularly fast, but some legit distances (2x Ironman, trail 50K, several marathons, etc...)
On the minus side, I did manage to break a pinky toe and bruise a few things in my feet here and there during my time running in them. Catching toes on things while trail running was the worst part of those shoes.
These days, I run primarily in Altras. They have the neutral cushion and moccasin shape that lets my feet move as well as they did in the Vibrams but without the possibility of snapping a toe in the same way. Only downside with them so far is that their shoes haven't held up nearly as well as other mainstream brands, I.E. the shoe uppers falling apart long before the soles were worn out. They've made design changes to address this and their customer service has always been very good. I got a big discount on my current pair based on my comments on the prior ones that I wore out prematurely.
For obstacle course and Death Race use I have basically the cheapest 1-size over (to accommodate multiple socks and foot swell on a long race) Adidas trail shoes I could find, with a focus on decent grip, cushioning and the ability to shed the water you inevitably submerge your feet in during those sorts of events.
