How to Improve Immune System, get sick less often?

Lots of fresh air(if you live in a polluted city..leave!),
some sunshine, plenty of physical exercise, balanced diet,
good sleep,a regular doctors and dentists check up.

Also,hopefully eventually a loving relationship...
..or at least regular sex with a hot chick [Image: smile.gif]

Primal/Paleo Diet
Coconut oil (hugely antiviral and antibacterial -I take 3 tablespoons+ per day)
Cold showers
Probiotics
Green Tea

Exercise - weights and intervals/sprints, but not overdoing the weights like most lifters do. 1-2 sessions a week, short and sharp, less than 40mins.

Good times with friends and intimacy with girls are also huge in keeping overall stress levels low I find.

Is it enough if I fry my chicken breasts in coconut oil or that's not enough coconut oil?

For immune system benefits you want to start taking it by the tablespoon. The people who pimp it reckon 3.5 tablespoons a day.

the best way I've found is, after food, to chew it/ swill it around your mouth till it's liquid, then gulp it back and drink some water. I got used to it after a couple of days.

3.5 Tbsps a day is also the dose they noticed it reducing HIV viral load in HIV patients, which is a pretty impressive result as you usually need a cocktail of nasty anti-viral drugs to do that.

Taking it in these doses has other benefits too - you get so much energy from it because it's quickly absorbed and converted to ketones, so you can cut your carbs, lose fat and think clearer, without the carby afternoon energy dips. It's the perfect addition to getting you "through" primal/paleo actually.

The winning formula for me is vitamin C.

If I take 1000mg per day, I simply don't get sick that winter. When I forgot for 1 to 2 weeks, sure enough I get a cold or the flu. As soon as I start feeling the symptons, I take 1000mg every 4hrs until they subside.

I also take other supplements, but vitamin C is the one that stops me from getting sick.

'A caution against extra ketone body production in long term ketogenic diets

I can’t really recommend having coconut oil as your main source of calories when already on a low carb ketogenic diet for a long period of time. When on such a low carbohydrate diet, the liver already produces ketone bodies in the amount needed for the cells to produce energy. When consuming coconut oil on top of that, the liver will produce extra ketone bodies, and we have no evidence that this is desirable in any way, especially in the long term. This can potentially be detrimental to the kidneys.

The Kitavans are native people from the Pacific Islands that are well known for their heavy use of coconut products. They’re also really healthy. They get a high proportion of their diet from starchy carbohydrates like yams and therefore are far from being on a ketogenic diet. We don’t have examples of traditional cultures who ate very low carbohydrate diets high in ketone producing medium-chain saturated fats like coconut oil.'

Actually, there was a study that can be found in the book "Don't Swallow Your Gum" that shows that mega-doses of Vitamin C will only help if you're training for something like the Olympics in Antarctica.

That said, I've found that lemons are very good for colds.

When I feel like I've got something coming on I take Echinacea supplements as well as garlic supplements.

It's not something you're supposed to be taking all the time, though.

Allicin, found in garlic, may have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

No I hadn't seen that, thanks.

I'm not sure how accurate he is though? The liver is only going to convert bodyfat to ketones if there's a deficit of energy from your food intake.

Presumably if you're ingesting alot of coconut oil at maintenance calories, you are just converting the coconut oil to ketones and not the bodyfat.

So its not like its "extra ketones"... you'll just be making your ketones from the coconut oil. The body downregulates what it burns from bodyfat when it's getting what it needs from food.

There's definitely a case for moderation though and not living off any one thing alone. But it'd take a LOT to be getting up to even 50% of your calories as a male... we're talking 10 tbsps+. Even then I only see that as a problem if that's a calorie surplus, it shouldnt even matter if you're at maintenance.

Obviously if you're 1000 calories over maintenance and that's all from coconut oil (9-10 teaspoons) then yes thats alot of extra ketones that wont be getting used. Eating too much isnt good for you, paleo or not... but coconut oil should be fine if you're eating in sensible calorie ranges.

I dunno, my biology is very basic - if the guy had laid out a scientific argument with sources, I'd be more inclined to believe him. As it is he's a "nutrition enthusiast"...so I'm not convinced (although that's all I am lol). Still I dont think he's right on this one.

Yeah, I know. Plenty of studies saying that.

All I know is that for me, and others I've recommended it to, it works. I don't care if it's placebo. It works, and unlike so much other stuff being recommended, "over-dosis" means little because you just piss it out. It's also a natural medicine, and studies for and against natural medicines are abundant. Just check out Linus Pauling.

For my part, I'll stick with what works, and let the OP know my thoughts.

G - I see you're going full metal on the natural health kicks recently.

Coconut cream, Apple Cider, etc.

Can you break down some staples in your diet that help you keep in tip top condition? Do you have some good ones you use to recover? Being a boxer myself - my body gets a lot of wear and tear from the weights and conditioning. I would kill for a good natural recovery product!

Ha.

You are reading my mind.

I have a Health post in the works. I need to do more trial and error on research though.

But yeah, Apple Cider, Coconut Oil, Gingko and some others I am a pretty big advocate of.

I am getting (and have been a while) into different teas. I really want to delve into this more.

Being a former heavy drug user, experimentation comes natural to me.

How to Improve Immune System, get sick less often?

I'm currently suffering from a hacking cough (possibly whooping), and I am taking tussin, drinking teas and water. What else can I do at this point to recover asap? My sinuses are open, so the problem is really just the cough/throat. I had plans to get it in with a couple of chicks this weekend so I'm really trying to get over this pronto. Thanks.

How to Improve Immune System, get sick less often?

Guys, I was fucked up for about a year. My adrenals were burned out, I had no energy. I couldn't drag myself out of bed without a pot of coffee and then I couldn't train without a rockstar or pre workout drink which made everything worse. If I went out I would get sick after one drink. I'd wake up with a sore throat and within days I would have a full blown upper respiratory infection. I was miserable, and desperate. Dr's kept prescribing antibiotics. I must have had 10 cycles of antibiotics in a year. My immune system was beyond shot. I started researching things on my own after I realized the docs didn't know/care what was happening to me.

Here is what I discovered.

NADH - this supplement is amazing. People with chronic fatigue syndrome take it. It's a naturally occurring enzyme that's a dirivative of B3. You will have more energy without the nasty buzz of caffeine. I take the 20mg pill. This substance will have your whole body functioning at a higher level. My body was so shot, I noticed it instantly. Your immune system will love you. Plus, it enhances the other vitamins you take. Seriously fucking awesome.

Vitamin C - I was desperate, I thought 2000mg of vitamin c was a lot. Wrong! Read this guide http://www.seanet.com/~alexs/ascorbate/1...e_1988.htm

You need so much more vitamin C than you know. The stuff is cheap and it's almost magical once you take enough of it. The doctor has all sorts of case studies where he treats various conditions and ailments with massive doses of vitamin C. It's an interesting read.

Sleep - If you aren't sleeping right, you will not heal/regenerate/recover. When you're drinking caffeine all day, you are burning out your adrenal glands and that's what regulates your energy levels. To make matters worse, your sleep will suffer.

ZMA- This supplement produces a deeper sleep. I'm sponsored by musclepharm and they have a product called BULLETPROOF, it has all sorts of herbs in addition to ZMA that produce a deep restful sleep.

I promise, you take this stuff, you're not getting a cold, the flu, a hacking cough etc ever again.

@fisto how did you get the opportunity to get sponsored by musclepharm?,they are a decent company with some good products.have you ever competed before?

ye good call on the adrenal burnout, not good. constant ingestion of stims will do this to you,not only does this make you fatigued all the time,it increases cortisol which can actually break muscle tissue down and can cause organ damage.

i also recommend vitamin c

and rhodiola rosea.its a natural adaptogen which helps in stress.ive been usin it for the last 3 days and i can feel effects already.more positive mood and energy.also its very good for the immune system check the studies! peace

Fisto -

Can you bust out the brands of these that you like?

How much vitamin C do you take?
