It's also useful for eliciting more information, or what some would call qualifying.

Her: "My name isn't all that unique in Turkey."
Me: "Oh well here in the U.S it certainly is. Tell me what your name means."
Her: "It means nice...pretty..."
Me: ....*give an inquisitive look (just in my eyes) asking for more information*
Her: "Well I got it from my grandmother, so..." (insecurity)
Me: "Not because you're actually nice and pretty..." *grin*
