Don't waste your time looking for cheap flights just to save a couple hundred bucks when you can pay next to nothing (there's a free version, too) for other people to do it for you
^ Have seen some insane deals as well like NY<->Buenos Aires in the $100s (was a mistake fare that didn't last long though - not sure if airline honored the fare but you'd never find that yourself unless ALL you did was look at flights)
Also, if you go to Google Flights and hit "Explore Destinations" (bottom right of the search box on desktop) you can see cheap weekend, 1 week, 2 week trips from your destination
If you want to get into miles and shit (probably only worth it if you spend a couple-few thousand a month+ on credit cards):
Check out travelfreely.net. Guy recommends the best travel CCs for your situation and there's a nice dashboard to keep track of everything. Free cuz the CC companies pay him if you sign up for one of the CCs
