In 2017 (Wroclaw) I'm seeing more suspicion from indirect approaches than from direct approaches, especially if you are genuinely interested in the girl.
I do think "scaring the cat" does apply, whether on opening or when trying to take things further in the day. But this only applies to some girls. Some girls do run from a direct approach, this is true. I scared a girl the other day and maybe she would have stuck around if I had rambled for a while about what type of milk I should buy. There is a distrust of foreigners which can scare them away if you're too forward, or for others you can scare them away because you're not being honest and they are suspicious.
More, especially the hot, bitchy looking ones know what is up when you came around and tried to stop them. Asking a random question can result in "He asked me out of all these people, come on..." Sometimes the high effort running around clown style hard stop is required for these, and brutal honesty.
The long banned GK mentioned the concept of "undergaming" with Polish women. It only takes a dozen or so average young polish couples walking by to see why.
At the moment I would probably say the sweet, innocent Polish girls might require "undergaming", as they can be suspicious of any foreigner and more secure with a polish guy even if he would get obliterated in the west. Going direct doesn't have to be all hardcore, you can just say you saw her from X (and point) and thought she looked nice and you wanted to say hello.
