Actually, the bleeding hearts were the two French, "Liberal" civilian dudes (gay couple??) who took incredible risks by visiting the depths of Benin, sure of their immunity (were they gay sex tourists??). Early colonialism in Africa has a mixed record, some good and some bad. Congo/Belgium mostly bad, Cote d'Ivoire or Gabon/France mostly good.

I would place a lot of the blame on the British in particular, the eternal meddlers. They stirred the pot in the Middle East too, by fucking with Iraq, Afghanistan and then the Balfour Declaration later. They sowed the seeds for a lot of the future conflict.
