Arafat Scarf, do you know of any barrios in CDMX that would be similar to Chapinero in Bogota? I prefer areas that aren't too high end, international, sterile, safe, etc. I like to have a more authentic and local experience, I also don't mind if it's a bit rough although I obviously don't want to stay in an area where I have to be super paranoid about my safety at all times. I'm probably going to stay in a hotel for my short trip, hoping to find something in the the $30-50 USD/night range.

Maybe La Condesa but its way less gritty then Chapinero.

I would probably say a little more east in Roma, because to me Condesa looked nicer than most other areas. Less gentrified still. But I'm sure there are areas more gritty, I just don't know what ones are recommended.

Escandon, Roma Sur or Narvarte. All of them are safe and centrally located.

Roma Norte is very bougie with cold-pressed juice bars and pretentious restaurants. Colonia Juarez is slightly less gentrified, but similar. Condesa is on the higher end, but it's a beautiful neighborhood that doesn't feel sterile in the least.

Roma Sur is a nice place to live, more tranquil and close to everything. It's not sterile but, you'll run into foreigners every once in awhile.

Escandon and Narvarte are more raw and not as 'hip'. If I weren't living in Roma Sur, I would probably be in Condesa or Escandon.

I haven't been to Colombia in 4 years but none of the colonias here are quite like Chapinero.

OP:

One the one hand it sounds like you're leaning towards Mexico, but on the other you've only lived in CDMX and don't have a real sense for the rest of the pais.

My advice? Take 3 months off from your six figure job, and visit 6 - 10 different cities and regions in Mexico. No one has the answers for YOU so you're best if you explore yourself. Yes, it's safe. I lived there for 4 months and it's totally fine.

Guys, is average CDMX girl as ugly as the average local girl in PDC(I am here now)?
Reading reports on this forum is a bit discouraging. Some say just 1-5% of girls are good looking and I imagine the competition for these is pretty rough?

I'd take one 7 over 10 5s at this point. Should I give CDMX a chance or go straight to Medellin [Image: smile.gif]? This reply from colombia thread was big help, but am still not sure.

I DON'T really care that much about the culture, cafes, nightlife and good local food. The biggest advantage CDMX has for me is safety and proximity/cheap flights to US/EU + I think tall/white... "advantage" would be much bigger.

One option would be to take the cheap flight there for a month and see but I am tired of traveling and was hoping to stay in the next place for at least 6 months.

Any thoughts? as am about to flip a coin [Image: smile.gif]

Don´t bother in CDMX. Go to Guadalajara.

The harder you practice, the luckier you get.

Making travel plans based on Tinder matches, especially in Medellin isn't the best plan but you'll still have lots of fun and be able to do some cool things, it's a fun city to hang out in but the local chicas may drive you nuts. Best of luck dude.

Why do you say this? I found Guadalajera is be pretty uninspiring as a city, it was flat and a spread out, a bit boring for my taste but the girls were fairly good looking and the night life was decent.

I'm still planning on hitting up CDMX soon, it just depends on work, once I get my lay off I'll be booking a flight the fuck out of here, maybe as early as next week, fingers crossed!

ciao fratello
I have heard that the "average" girl in Mexico City is exactly that: average.
but then again, I would hopefully be hitting up some upscale joints where the hotties lurk. In my mind Mexican chicas can be insanely hot- there's just not as many as there are in Colombia!
speaking of Colombia... I am so bummed being back in NY after having tasted the forbidden fruit (aka 2 months of pure Colombian bliss)... a part of me wants to just buy a pussy pad in Colombia but that just seems kinda ridiculous... since nowhere in Colombia is as exciting as Mexico City...
I guess I'll just use those Aeromexico points and fly down to Medellin on the reg...

yo nice to see a connazionale in here.

DF is pretty safe if you stick to the best areas like Condesa etc.
Some highway around the city is infamous for kidnappings but they usually target Mexicans, you should be ok as foreigner unless you show off your money to the wrong people. I would take coletivos rather than driving around if you are not familiar with the area.

Regarding rest of Mexico its obviously a massive place, as rule of thumb the closer to the American border the more dangerous. Have heard some real gangster shit from people that comes from there and had family members killed/burned alive by the narcos.

I would avoid Acapulco and Chihuahua. Quintana Roo and Yucatan are very safe, even though some cartel recently entered in Cancun and violence is rising.

Italians have a very positive image in Mexico, as I guess rest of Europeans. Mexican people are amazing but a bit ignorant, so don't expect them to know much about our country or anything other than Mexico. The one that do have usually lived in Europe/USA and have a more snobbish attitude its hard to explain but you will recognise them easily.

The only places where I met many Italians was Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Chances are you will meet none in Mexico City, very weird experience if you used to visit cities like Rio, Miami, NYC, BA where there are plenty..
If you are like me and like to have fellow countrymen around I would avoid Mexico City.

You can kill it in Mexico but I didn't think girls hotness was anywhere near Brazil or Colombia so take that in mind.

Condesa near the Mexico Parque as close to that Amsterdam street would be a great location. If you like nightlife anyway. There is a gym relatively close also and some good shopping options.

- How do real estate prices in Mexico City or Bogota compare with, say, New York City?? Again I am getting a little confused. The fantasy of how far my dollar would go got erased when I looked up properties in Polanco, Roma, La Condesa. They weren't NY prices but they were surprisingly expensive.

- What's life in Mexico City like as a resident? I have this romantic idea that it's frenetic but also wildly exciting, a cauldron of fascinating characters, amazing food, warm people, Europe-meets-Azteca, art.

- To those who earn US dollars and live abroad, how did you deal with the whole taxation conundrum? Did you continue paying taxes in the US and also in Mexico?

- Does Mexico have health insurance?

- What type of Visa would I need to live part-time in the country?

Background: I have spent the last 3.5 years moving from country to country, spending between 1 and 3 months in every city I go to.
I "lived" in Mexico City for 4 months recently and seriously considering it as my semi-permanent homebase. Its very liveable as long as you have a decent income, and while mexico as a whole is somewhat dangerous and some parts even outright fucked up (Sinaloa, Michoacan, Guerrero) - mexico city is a very safe bubble and I never saw or heard of anything other than avoidable petty crime like pickpockets.

- Stay in Roma or Condesa, the nicest area with many parks, amenities and also where all the cool spots are. Neighboring areas are also good if you want to save on rent, but remember traffic is hell so location is important.

- Regarding taxes, as long as you spend less than 1 month per year in the US you can avoid paying Federal taxes and depending on your state of residence, also no state taxes.
You still need to pay self-employment taxes though. Read up more about this here and on the web: https://www.thebalance.com/foreign-earne...on-3193474
Just search for "FEIE"
THIS IS HUGE. Think about it - By living outside the US but still making US income, you are effectively increasing your salary by around 30%.

Downsides to cdmx - in my experience:

- Mexican women are on average some of the ugliest latinas IMO. Only the wealthy mexicans are hot, and they act like little telenovela princesses. I found the wealthy mexicans to be fucking annoying, but I imagine that with enough time there you can learn how to game your way past it.

The more native-looking women have bodies shaped like a cinderblock thanks to their corn-heavy & grease-heavy diet and unfortunate genetics.

Luckily there's enough latinas from other parts of the americas, mainly colombianas and venezolanas. I tried to focus on colombianas while there.

- Lack of diversity. Coming from NYC and having lived all over the world, I enjoy diversity in people. Mexico City is probably 98% mexican, with the rest being immigrants from latin america and some US/EU expats here and there. I think this is changing fast though.

- Rainy season is in the summer (june-september) and that means daily rain.

That said, I will probably spend half of the year there and the other half traveling around the world. Maybe we can get some mexican craft brews when I'm back there in the spring. Cheers mate

Condesa/Roma Norte for sure.
Here's a screenshot of my google maps, as you can see from my stars all the good bars and food is concentrated there.

If you need to save some cash, try Roma Sur or Colonia Juarez which still is walking / biking (lots of bike sharing options in cdmx) distance to all these places.
