Can you guys recommend a few books/resources?
Search on Youtube for the Chessnetwork "Beginner to Chess Master" series. Excellent and all free.
Chess.com has a ton of good content also, but I think it requires a subscription.
Also there's some good analysis of the Carlsen vs Caruana World Championship match at the moment which is really informative (e.g. John Bartholomew's youtube channel)
Nice thread.
I don't know if I have much to add here but I would just say how much I prefer playing 2 minutes chess. I think it gets too much of a time waste and boring if it's 20 min, 10 min or even 5 min each. You will often have to wait quite long for the other player to make a move even though there's a bad chance of him winning (and vice versa in rare cases ).
I think 1 minute is a bit too short since a lot of players just try to win by time but 2-3 minutes seems like the perfect sweet spot where you need to think chess and also be quick in your thinking.
By the way, maybe I'm not the best person to suggest this with so few posts but it would be nice if there was a tournament here somewhere near Christmas...?

Chess is awesome, my work has a Tuesday lunch chess club and it's a lot of fun even though I'm new and pretty awful at it.
USCF Advanced expert (ELO 2100+). I'm sure we have stronger players on this forum....
Now that last game between Caruana and Carlsen was fun! Saw GM Pepe Cuenca analyze that game. b4 is always the kind of move you want to play if you can get away with it.

Wow, Gun, 2100 that is rarified air.
Golden gun is a liar, we played for money and he fell for scholar's mate. What a joke.
Easiest 100 bucks I ever made, would recommend!

I'll second Peregrine.
I played Golden gun and he kept asking me the difference between chess and checkers. Kept wanting to move pawns down the diagonals and jump my pieces.
Also tried to palm my queen when I wasn't looking. Sad!

I agree with Peregrine and polar.
I played against Golden Gun.
With white, he plays the Colle or London System without exception, with black he chooses 1...g6 against everything.
Plus we all know that US ELO ratings are inflated.
After I punished his lazy pre-moves by easily capturing half his pieces 8 games in a row, thereby forcing him to deviate from his cookie-cutter opening systems and play some actual chess, I quickly exposed him as the 1200 patzer he is.
WPAAMFEEP (Would play again and mine for easy ELO plus).

That would be cool to have a single elimination tournament for everyone who plays here on chess.com
Magnus Carlsen, World Chess Champion! Fabiano Caruana, here's some tissues!!
Is there a lot of cheating going on online, with players using computers?
Golden gun have you ever played against Nasa Test Pilot? his rating is 2550.

This is a good site, the Saint Louis Chess Club YT channel. I've recommended it for my nephew, they have some instructional videos along with some lectures on chess, and a social vibe as well.

Just keep knocking out reps. You'll settle in at your IQ point haha. That's my take. I have a friend who is a pretty smart guy, couldn't play, but he played a lot on chess.com and now beats my ass 2/3 times.
I used to play him online with a beer in hand surfing the net and beat him down, not anymore.
If you're a beginner I think chess.com is good for getting raw reps in and not over thinking as its timed

^ I'm in.
Haven’t played in forever, I have a sick wooden chess set with a slide out drawer for the pieces that I might have to dig out over the holidays.
I think I saw a comment on Roosh’s last webcast that said “the only male space left is chess. Man, that’s dark.” Strange times

I used to play chess professionally as a kid ... ended up 10th in the country when I was 10 years old in my age group. My biggest mistake was lack of patience and defensive nous. Always wanted to go for the jugular, some crazy combination or a high-risk strategy which doesn't always work when you're playing with people around your level or higher.
Sadly didn't follow it through properly, but still play on chess.com once in a while.
Hated analyzing Tigran Petrosian's matches (such a boring, defensive player, chess equivalent of Mourinho) ... loved Fischer and Alekhine and their playing style, both died very young sadly, Alekhine most probably assassinated by the Soviets.

Alright I'm gonna host a 2018 Championship Tourney at this time.
Anyone who is keen, reply to this message with your chess.com handle or send it as a PM. I will friend you then invite you to this tourney. I can only create a tourney 5 days ahead.
10 minute rapid chess format, so with 20 guys it'll run a couple hours.
I want to keep with forum rules so consider creating a burner chess handle linked to your burner RVF email. This would also be nice because you can use your RVF handle on the chess board and other guys will know who you are.
