Also - if they have 7500 homeless, then 16.000 shits per week in the streets is good work. Many of them must be shitting in bags, Starbucks coffee-shops or bushes. Maybe SF should start an investigation why their homeless are shitting only 16.000 logs - those guys are way too constipated. There should be 400.000 shits per month out there by my account. "We don't know what it's from and we're not going to test it," said a Department of Public Works spokeswoman. "We just got rid of it. This is very unusual."
In April, the International Union of Operating Engineers filed a complaint with the California Department of Transportation on behalf of Caltrans workers, alleging that their safety was being jeopardized due to a variety of factors, including human waste produced by vagrants living near freeways and associated property.

Yes the high housing costs are affecting everyone across the board but the guy sleeping in a truck in the company parking lot is not from the same socioeconomic demographic as the people doing the pooping.
For $10k I would have bought a used motorhome or truck and RV trailer. Although either of those might have set off alarms with his employer since he's trying to be stealth.

I also listened to some older talks of how the times change and this ties into Silicon Valley. Up until the 1980s all the semi-useless sons of the wealthy and powerful were sent to work for the CIA - they all wanted to play James Bond. Since the 1990s those sons are sent to Silicon Valley using their connections, having some seed money and hoping that far more talented people below them will come up with one idea that will make them a success - if not, then it does not matter. They are CEOs of 10-15 startups while the tech employees work off their asses hoping for some bigger crumbs later and the ones at the bottom can hardly afford a home.
Meanwhile the heirs of fortunes can act Steve Jobs just as their predecessors in the past used to play James Bond. The Elizabeth Holmes story also ties into it with the difference that she ran the con longer and more convincing, most of the other guys would have sunk 10 mio. $ into it and then went on to a different project unfazed.

Funny how conferences which have been held in SF for decades are being cancelled because visitors feel unsafe.
I remember how Zurich downtown around the beautiful central train station used to be a shithole some 20 years ago. Everywhere you looked there were drug-users and homeless and the city was at first very lenient and progressive about it. It only got worse and there were people who said, that those poor people would just go elsewhere. And you know what? When the city cracked down on all of it like New York in the past, the scum went elsewhere. You don't see them in the city center at all and they created a huge luxurious underground mall below the historic train station in Zurich.
Shooting up drugs is illegal in public, loitering in public is illegal too, setting up tents on sidewalks is illegal as well. They could clean things up fast if they wanted to. The people would creep away into the shadows and the drug users would move elsewhere. If you make things tough for them instead of distributing needles, then they disappear.
The working poor would remain, but my guess is that they are the minority there.
I honestly don't know how americans can live in a society with bums, loons and criminals everywhere in the cities.

@nomadbrah unless there is a consistently better option for meeting members of the opposite sex, the trend toward living in cities will continue. As long as the demand exists, there is little incentive for the authorities in cities like SF and NYC to clean up their turf.
Don't forget that a lot of that demand is ultimately driven by the choices of career women. They're the ones who choose to move from cities to suburbs to pursue the Sex and the City life. If all the women who worked for Silicon Valley tech companies in HR and recruiting had been content to live in Silicon Valley (a very suburban place), I am almost certain that the men (economic creators) would have followed, and the city of San Francisco would not have experienced the economic growth that it has over the past 7 or so years.

I've been living in Vietnam, a developing country, for over a year. I've been everywhere from big cities to small villages. Not once have I been hit up for money by bums. It puts living in Chicago into perspective where I could be approached by three bums in less than five minutes anywhere in the city.

What I mean is, I would go mad, having to dodge all these people every day. I get paranoid by crazy people, I don't mind beggars, but junkies, thugs and loons bother me. I don't like having to be on guard everywhere because some crazy person, who should be in an institution, is defecating in the streets. You'd think enough people agreed to do something about it.
I see what you mean. I was there this past weekend -- I travel there for work a lot. I actually didn't see anything like what was described in this article. I went near the financial district. I suspect that this stuff is limited to certain neighborhoods like the Tenderloin. San Francisco is very spread out. It's possible that many people don't have to go into the bad parts of town when they go to and from work and school.
