So I'm a recent college graduate and I currently have a job offer to teach high school and coach football at a private school in the rural American South. Where I would live isn't terribly backwoods, a little under 50,000 people and it's got 3-4 good places to get drinks, some good restaurants, a public library and shit like that, so I'm not in the boondocks. The school itself is honestly quite solid, I'm not doing any TFA ghetto bs, and I liked the people I met when interviewing, so I'm interested in the gig.
The high school is about a 25 minute drive into the country, and is sandwiched between agricultural fields, but is located right off major highways and stuff like that. However, the town of 50,000 I'll be staying in is the largest "city" for over an hour in every direction, so this place will be radically more..."provincial"? than anywhere I've ever lived, as even my college town was larger and situated by other cities. Basically, one of the things I'm most afraid of is what the social scene will be like here. I imagine making any real friends will be tough (tbh never experienced that problem before, but I feel like I'm gonna be pretty alien to guys my age there), which is honestly straight. I'm only going to be there for a year before going to law school and I've got plenty of friends from high school and college. I don't need to be constantly surrounded by the boys. The thing I'm more concerned about, as you may have surmised from the title, is whether I'm going to get any action whatsoever. Like I just have no idea how I would even going about pick up in this situation, it's so radically different from anything else I've been in.
I'm posting to see if anyone has experience coming into this kind of situation as a yankee (outsider), what takeaways they have, any words on how, or whether, I could pull down there. I understand random hookups aren't really gonna be the move, which is good, as I definitely needed a change from my college rhythm. I get that one of the key things from me as getting as socially "inside" as possible, which I think should be boosted by my position at the area's top school and my participation with the football program (I'll get involved with other activities/athletics at the school too probably). I'm trying to think of what else I could get involved with, and I know the obvious thing is start attending church. The happy coincidence is that I've been trying to get more serious about my immortal soul recently, praying and stuff sometimes, so maybe this comes at the right time.
Where would I be trying to pull girls? I've heard before that church is a good spot to meet a ltr quality chick, which I can sort of see, but still don't entirely understand. Surely no one is going to church with the intention of meeting a partner they don't already know - right? And I don't even know what my nice church guy game would look or sound like. Most of my approaches are through drunken parties or iOs applications. Like I have female friends, I can obviously talk to girls in normal situations, but I'm completely at a loss for how to do pick up at a worship service.
tl;dr: considering job in rural south, nervous that my lack of Social Proof and the pre-existence of life-long social circles I'm completely outside of will prevent me from making any good male friends and, more critically, any sex. I'm hesitant to take a job that will condemn me to nine dry months. Will it?
