Nah. It's White to move or Black to move.

Working on this stuff consistently and solid knowledge of one opening got me a good amount of rating points.

Nice to see that there are some other RVF members who have a passion for the game.
I used to play a lot for a local club during my teens, managed to achieve a rating of about 2000 ELO.
When I started university I stopped playing competitively though, mainly because studying chess books didn't really provide an ideal counterbalance to studying textbooks.
Nowadays I just follow the news on chessbase.com and keep on playing blitz and bullet games on playchess.com, but uninstall it from time to time, as it's really addictive.
I love the game, but currently the time I'd need to get significantly better at my level yields more return when spent on other areas of my life.

As for how to get better as a beginner, I'd say this series by Artur Yusupov is worth a look.

Not trying to revive a long dead thread, but I've recently started getting back into playing seriously. I'm laid up for three weeks here at the barracks with surgery, so I have plenty of time on my hands and was wondering in anyone here is active on Lichess.com and would be interested in playing some games.

Chess has to be in my opinion one of the greatest games ever made, it has stood the test of time and still offers new ideas and areas of study. I think that there are mental benefits to playing as well. It is a gentleman's game for the ages! I would also be interested in just discussing theory and styles of play. I haven't been active on the forum in a long time but I am looking to change that. Things still seem as lively as ever on here!
