Craigslist removes personals section

Craigslist, the widely-used classified ads website, has removed its ‘personals’ section, which displays dating and friendship listings, from its U.S. website in response to a new bill against sex trafficking passed by Congress Wednesday.

Under the new bill, individuals who own, manage or operate a website “to promote or facilitate the prostitution of another person” can face fines and prison terms of up to 10 years. Penalties can also be imposed on a person who “promotes or facilitates” prostitution of five or more people, or “acts with reckless disregard that such conduct contributes to sex trafficking.”

This means that the owners of websites which allow the posting of classified ads, such as Craigslist, could face charges or prison terms even if third parties misuse the service to promote prostitution.

In a statement posted on its website, Craigslist explained that “any tool or service can be misused” and therefore the company “can’t take such risk” with its ‘personals’ section. It added that it was “regretfully” taking its personal ads offline, but would hopefully “bring them back some day.”

Over the years, Craigslist’s ‘personals’ section has developed something of a cult following in the U.S., spawning Twitter accounts devoted to sourcing the strangest, funniest and most heartwarming posts. One such account, called CraigslistLove, has nearly 60,000 followers.

However, the site has also been used in the past for listings for escorts

Nanny state do-gooders at it again.

I had a lot of good times meeting horny chicks on Craiglist and there was NO money involved.

Yet I bet half of the geniuses in congress were banging P4P craiglist broads.

On the bright side it probably won't be long before a blockchain version of Craigslist comes along.

Man I truly feel you on this one Vincent! The quality available on CL was truly underrated due to chicks rarely talking about it publicly. Hopefully it'll be back... but I'm not holding my breath!!!

Probably a question for a lawyer, but I wonder if a police officer can arrest someone for a posting on a foreign owned website? It is not like you can subpoena anything foreign in a county or state court and anyone's lawyer can question the legitimacy of the police's screenshot evidence. If no money changed hands, I suppose they have to make the arrest based upon discussion of paid services and the woman obviously an officer getting you to discuss the rate and come over.

I really hate entrapment tactics. Very unethical. Like when US military would put weapons caches in Iraqi neighborhoods and shoot anyone coming up and grabbing the weapons. How would they know the person taking a gun out of the box would use it against the US? What if they wanted it for personal protection? Just ridiculous.

Tinder is next. Already noticed hookers from Backpage on tinder.

David took his men with him and went out and killed two hundred Philistines and brought back their foreskins. They counted out the full number to the king so that David might become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage. 1 Samuel 18:27

This was covered as part of a larger thread on the Feds seizing Backpage.com.

I don't want to keep repeating the comments I made on that thread (and elsewhere), but...I will ask one thing.

If rock music lyrics were such a problem that they had to hold Congressional hearings about them from 1985-1988, then why are they not holding hearings every week now on rap music lyrics? Why were the lyrics of pop songs discussed on talk radio and on nightly newscasts back then, but no one talks about that stuff now?

If you can figure the answer to this, then you'll understand why Craigslist and Backpage operated for decades with minimal issues but suddenly became an all-encompassing problem that needed to be stamped out IMMEDIATELY!

Wonder what the next "issue" will be and who will profit off the "crisis?"

Nah man! Once you had a carefully crafted Ad... you received an awful lot of Bots message... and a few legit ones from single girls wanting to "feel" like what you described in your ad. The Bots were annoying, but shit it was a passive pussy stream! And Backpage was around so Hookers didn't bother with CL
