Pub Crawl Datasheet

What are they:
Pub Crawl are organized groups of people that usually meet in a central bar or plaza, then go to 3-4 different bars and typically finish at a nightclub. The cost will range from $10-$30, and will include drink specials, free shots at each bar (normally), occasionally an hour of free drinks at the beginning, occasionally free pizza, as well as no cover for the nightclub. If you are staying somewhere long term, many pub crawls let you come back at a discounted rate or even free your 2nd or 3rd time doing it. I will say, you normally get your money's worth.

They can range from 5 to 100+ people, normally tourists however that depends on the city. Buenos Aires for example can be more than half Argentinians on Fridays/Saturdays. Some are organized by hostels, others by the companies that do the free walking tours in the daytime, and others independent entirely. Depending on the city, they can run every day of the week or just Thur-Sat. For those travelling alone, it is also a great way to find a bunch of like-minded people to go out with instead of having to ride solo.

Demographics:
Typically there will be more guys than girls, 70/30 or 60/40. One tip is finding the local Erasmus or Au Pair facebook page, as the crawls they go on tend to flip the ratio. The age range can vary depending on the city, but typically it will be 18-30 or so, trending on the lower end of that range. I have found the best pub crawls to be 10-15 people, close to half girls, that way everyone gets to know each other and regardless of whether you hookup or not, it’s just a fun night with a good crowd.

Picking up:
Pub crawls can be great for picking up, especially with the right vibe set by the guides. Many start doing challenges such as body shots as the night goes on and it can get things going in the right direction. The biggest key is to start early. You want to be one bar ahead of all the other guys when hitting on girls on a pub crawl. At the meeting point, talk to everyone, do the typical hostel conversation and get their names and where they are from, see who is receptive and who isn’t, who is with friends or alone, etc. This will do two things: 1st, most the guys will be too shy at this point to even do that; 2nd, normally some sort of drinking games happen at the first bar, so you can at least be familiar with the girls and potentially have her as your beer pong teammate or whatever game they end up playing.

At the first bar, you want to start narrowing down your targets and flirting a bit. Remember, the other guys will just be meeting the girls at this point. At the 2nd bar, you are probably ready to kiss the girl for the first time. Keep it short and ideally somewhat secretive, you are just letting her know that you want her and you can make moves, not showing off to everyone and embarrassing her. The other guys will just be getting drunk enough to flirt at this point, so you are already far enough ahead. The third bar is when you start dropping seeds about heading back to your place. Normally most the girls will finally be paired off at this point, and the guys that aren’t part of that are a bit antsy, drunk, and finally trying to make moves. Ideally, you don’t want to go to the club. They will be going hard for the cockblock at that point, she will probably be a bit tipsy and flirty with others as well, and finally the drinks are going to be expensive. Sometimes you need to, but then it becomes a marathon of a night.

One note is that 90% of all guys on the pub crawl will not talk to locals at the bars you go to. You can always stick around at a bar when the group leaves, just ask the guide what the next stop is and meet them there. Since locals are typically my target in Europe, I’ll pull the string in a heartbeat and bail on the group if need be. You might miss the free shot, but that’s not the end of the world.

Logistics:
Obviously if you are pulling from a pub crawl, it’s ideal to have a hotel/airbnb or a private room at a hostel that isn’t particularly strict on guests (or have an extra wristband for her if it is). Of course there is always the bathroom at the bar or an alley, but to each his own. For other tips on gaming in hostels, check out my hostel data sheet.

Working on a pub crawl:
One of the more fun jobs you can have while travelling is this. Not only are you probably drinking free, you basically can choose who you go home with from all the girls on the pub crawl. It’s one of those celebrity status jobs.

Final tips:
- Be the fun guy who is starting games and making everyone laugh.
- Make your moves early.
- Don’t get absolutely shit faced. On that note, take advantage of the first hour if it’s free beer/wine, but if it’s free drinks, be careful.
- Don’t pay if you don’t like the look of the group; if you show up and it’s 10 guys and no girls, just roll solo that night. Try to get there like 15 minutes before the group leaves the meeting point if it’s in a plaza. If the meeting point is the first bar, aim for 30 minutes before.
- If you are on a strict budget, you can follow around a pub crawl without being on it. Sometimes you can even sneak a free shot in. Wait for someone to get shitface and leave for home and ask them for their wristband, because you will probably need the band for the final club.

My favorite pub crawls (just to name a few):
Madrid- There are three pub crawls that meet in the center square of Madrid on the weekends, so you can just go to the one with the best ratio. The Madride pub crawl is free after your 2nd time so if you pay the 6 euros for unlimited hour of beer/sangria, you get that, 4 shots, and cover for the club. Even if you don’t go past the first stop, 6 euros for an hour of beer is a good pregame.
Split and Hvar, Croatia - The Split one was absolute shenanigans, 2.5 hours of unlimited alcohol and free pizza. Hvar was also cool as the first hour is open bar on a boat.
Prague- The first pub crawl I ever went on, 2 hours of unlimited beer and a free tshirt are included. Normally a pretty big group, but a fun night.
Others: Ljubliana, Dublin (free after 1st time), Tallinn, Krakow, Buenos Aires (1 hr beer + pizza, reserve in advance), Rome (spanish steps)

If you have any questions about pub crawls in particular cities ask away, I've probably been on them (aside from Asia). Also, if you have any you especially liked, go ahead and post. Now, queue all the comments about how the ratios suck, how you are paying for friends, and how it's a bunch of ugly girls...[Image: tard.gif]

The Buenos Aires Pub Crawl was really fun, and i got a good number of flags from it. I think is still going on, and visits a diferent Bs As nightzone each day of the week.

The Koh Tao pub crawl is quite famous in the Thailand backpacking circuit. I believe the first image you shared, in your post, is from that pub crawl. I’ve been a few times and it is pretty good. Decent enough ratio; still probably 60:40, men:women though.

I’ve also been on a ton of pub crawls in Western Europe. Most are quite similar. My favourites were in Portugal (Lisbon and Lagos) since they were super cheap and had decent ratios.

Another good strategy is to do the pub crawl once, and follow their route. Then on other nights out you know basically where they go and join them on the way...while not paying and hitting on girls that are a bit drunker than at the beginning while they never saw you before make sleazy approaches. I even got some free drinks from this method and locals were not identifying me as a pub crawler..

Another possibility is minding your own business and late at nights follow a random pub crawl that you see for a good night out.

Most of the times the pub crawls go to shitty empty bars though before the final club/bar, but it<s a good way to warm up before the real night out or meet prospects.

Madrid hostel pub crawls are too lit and they are on every day in the summer, the girls were fun and I even met some from Poland and Venezuela. I need to go back there for the good vibes.

Great post by DigitalNomad.
I do agree in some city and occasions especially in weekdays when the nightlife is not at its peak, this is a good alternative even if you are looking for local girls, at least to warm up the night and be social.

This is a good point about the importance to understand the right moment to leave if there are no targets or the night is not peaking for some reason; it summarizes well the pub crawl experience with DigitalNomad last summer when after leaving the crawl at the right time, we were eventually successful with two other girls.

It was the pub crawl company that picked us all up at Yes Hostel Lisbon. Which btw, is an excellent hostel. We met with a few other hostel groups at the first bar. This same pub crawl company also does free walking tours in Lisbon.

I second this is an excellent pub crawl and hostel...do they still serve unlimited beer in the bars?

Subscribed. Banged a swedish chick there last summer in a double room. Her girlfriend was sleeping in the other bed)))

If you're doing the pub crawls it's worth mentioning that the location should be a pussy magnet. In places like Portugal or Spain it may yield some decent results but in EE you're likely to end up with a land whale or a bunch of loud Brits.

A good tip mentioned in the original post is to check out the group before joining in. Many pub crawls encourage you to sign up and pay in advance by offering discounts, don't do it. Instead note down the meeting point and show up 5-10 mins before the pub crawl starts.

Another good tip is to observe the people who are waiting for the pub crawl to start. Are they with a lot of friends ? Ratios can be deceiving. Girls that travel in groups of 3 or more are unlikely to split up.
