I've got a heavy work day tomorrow but I'm going to try a one day fast from sundown Saturday to sundown Sunday. (Dunno why Sundown, just kinda feels appropriate.) You all have convinced me.

None of this "not showering for 3 days will make me lose crazy amounts of fat" stuff though. I would want to see some form of paper on pubmed or any other medical journal before I try that.

Consider this feedback.

First there are various types fasting of methods. You need to pick the one that will help you best achieve your aim. Hard Dry fasting is the most intense but so are the results it gives.

Second - why would fast sundown to sundown? This means you will eat later in the evening. You will likely overeat and then go to sleep on a full stomach after a fast. This cannot be good for the body bc digestion takes a huge amount of energy and effort for the stomach to digest. But you are forcing the body to sleep when it should be getting some digestive help by being active -- like going for a long walk etc.

Do instead sundown to sunset. Go to sleep on a empty stomach from having fasted the whole day. Once you fall asleep which will usually be easy to do -- you will have no hunger pain in your sleep. And it will be early morning and time to wake up before you know it. It is quite EASY to do.

Most important break your fast properly.

Have warm or a bit hot water. Put in fresh lemon juice from a real lemon or lime. Add a touch of salt. Drink that first thing. Then after a bit have water rich fruits only - watermelon is the best. Blueberries also good. Have only two different kinds of fruits -- in the beginning. Then wait for another couple of hours. Try to have homemade soup with fresh vegetables and a lot of liquid for the rest of the day.

Don't eat anything you see.,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure about the difference between sundown and sunset, but where I'm at the sundown's at around 7:00 PM, which corresponds to the end of my IF window.

In practice this means "I will skip lunch tomorrow then eat dinner slightly later than usual."
So we're not talking something that is going to require herculean amounts of willpower here.

I'll keep that in mind about the water and the blueberries, though. That's good advice.

Well, that was fairly easy.

Might just do it again next week.

After reading this thread and a few other articles online I decided to give this a try to jumpstart my weight loss.

I ate my last meal on Sunday night April 8th around 6:30 pm. The next morning, 4/9/2018, I weighed 237.6 lbs and the tape measure showed 44" around the fattest part of my waist (love handles included). [Image: blush.gif]

This morning, 4/16/2018, I weighed 220.2 lbs and the tape measure showed 43".

One week of doing nothing but drinking water and sparkling water resulted in weight loss of 17.4lbs and 1" off of my waist. I had been wearing 40" waist pants that were getting snug. Today they are loose.

I am going to continue on with this water fast for awhile longer to see how long I can go. I should mention that I am 6'2" tall and am 46 years old so my metabolism is not as fast as it used to be. I have not been lifting at all. The only exercise I have been doing is an hour walk early in the morning when I get up.

Certain things I noticed -

On day three I was really tired and couldn't concentrate on anything. I went o bed at 6:30 pm because I felt so drained. I got a bit of a scare on day four when I felt a bit off while driving. I stopped and had an unsweetened iced tea and that seemed to help.

I had one small bowel movement on day four and then a surprisingly decent bowel movement on day six.

I have noticed by the end of the day I am tired and have been going to bed between 8:30 and 9:30 pm.

I did cheat a few times. On days three and four I had a few tablespoons of brown mustard. The sensation of food in my mouth was amazing and the spice was extraordinarily noticeable. Yesterday I had to go out for a family function and I had a very tiny piece of pizza.

I have noticed a latent hunger but it is more like background noise than anything else.

I have a white film on my tongue when I get up in the mornings.

There is also something off with my urine. I forgot to flush the toilet once and my daughter asked me if I threw up. When I went to see what she was talking about there were lots of floaters? in the toilet. They weren't bubbles. I don't know what they were.

That's it for me after one week.

Is fasting recommended if you're already in good shape?

I've got a few two week water fast under my belt. Check out Paul Bragg's book the Miracle of Fasting on the subject. Too many positives to list. I almost felt like a new person afterwards. The first three days are actually the most difficult getting over the hunger pangs. After adjusting physically, it becomes a mental game in achieving success. I believe most individuals would reap health benefits doing a 24 to 36 hour fast once a week.

As I mentioned before, the primary reason to fast is to achieve good internal health.
Fit does not necessarily mean you are healthy.

In addition to all the other benefits of fasting already discussed in this thread, which apply to everyone (e.g., who would not want to eliminate old and sick cells from their body?), research visceral fat (the fat between the organs).

You can have low levels of subcutaneous fat, the typical fat that people see on their bodies, and consider yourself healthy and yet have high levels of visceral fat, which is very unhealthy. Fasting will eliminate both types of fat, while merely exercising often eliminates only subcutaneous fat.

Quote:Quote:

Studies also show that intermittent fasting may help you lose visceral fat (76, 77). In fact, a large review of studies found that following an intermittent fasting style of eating helped reduce visceral fat by 4–7% over a period of 6–24 weeks (77).

Those side effects are very typical of a fast. "On day three I was really tired and couldn't concentrate on anything." In an earlier post, I stated that it usually takes two days for women and three days for men to use up their glucose supply and to switch to burning fat, which can often result in brain fog. That is likely what happened to you.

You should try to limit your driving. The mental fog that results from fasting and detoxifying can be similar to drinking alcohol. The latent hunger that is like background noise is also very typical after the third day or so, when your hunger significantly reduces in intensity. A bowel movement is not typical after the first day of a fast but you also said that you cheated, which likely provoked some peristalsis in the digestive tract.

The white film on your tongue when you get up in the mornings is a sign of your body detoxifying and is also very typical of a fast. It is especially common for someone on the Standard American Diet of garbage. If you eat healthy you typically do not get the white coating on your tongue.

Quote:Quote:

A few days of fasting will coat the tongue with a thick, white, toxic material that has a strong odor. This whitish coating can be scraped off and examined. In fact, you can spoon-scrape and brush the tongue clean but, in a few hours, the coating usually returns. This is an indication of the amount of putrefying toxic filth, mucus and poisons that are accumulated in the body’s cells that are now being eliminated from the inside surface of the stomach, intestines, organs and from all parts the entire body. This is one of the cleansing miracles of fasting.

Those floaters in the toilet are the remnants from the detoxification of gonorrhea from deep within your testicles. Haha. Just kidding. I never heard of that symptom. [Image: tongue.gif]

I ate about 1.5 pounds of meat today, plus some veggies and an avocado.

Didn't fast at all and I feel 100%.

This not fasting stuff is pretty awesome, I would post videos about all the awesome things eating food does to your body, but there's too many on youtube. Here's a few:

1. Don't feel hungry.
2. Don't die of hunger.
3. Can focus on things other than being hungry.
4. Sex drive is very high.
5. Gives your jaw muscles their daily exercise.
6. Keeps your body running like a well-oiled machine.
7. Gives your body all kinds of vitamins and minerals it needs in order to function.
8. You won't be hangry.

I could go on, but it's crazy, there's so many benefits, you guys should try it, lots of cool research being done in this area by some not so well known doctors, alternative medicine and such.

Lots of religions promote it as well, eating, their members that adhere to it don't starve, and many procreate.

It's interesting stuff for those in the know.

If any of you try it, let me know how it goes.

Not true. When I was a lad, I visited the doctor and I said: "Doc, I want a ten-inch dick."

He had me pull down my pants and he took a look. He said: "No problem son, just fold it in half."

There are different methods of fasting. The No Sugar & Junk Food Thread, For Those That Are Serious About Quitting -- which you started is also a type of fasting. Its usually called a sugar fast. It's actually one of the most difficult types of fasting bc you are still eating and the sugar cravings still get slightly stimulated. Even a taking small sweet accidentally will create huge cravings. A regular fast only on water is usually more easy once you get use to it bc no craving is getting stimulated. One should go on a sugar fast once a few fasts on water have been completed. Those who just start a sugar fast usually don't last long on it.

Is black coffee allowed on this fast? I was thinking of doing this as I'm already on a two week sugar/booze fast but cant imagine how dangerous I'd be to society without a coffee before the daily work commute...

DO NOT DRIVE A CAR WHILE FASTING.

(Ideally, if possible, you should not even be working in your day job. Stay at home and/or go for small walks. Take food and drink with you even if you have no intention of using it. Have someone with you if possible.)

The more often you do fasting, the easier it gets.

A reminder here that the 2 most dangerous things while fasting:

1. Standing up too quickly from a lying or sitting position.
(Do this as slowly as possible. Get up too fast and you risk fainting and banging your head.)

2. Pissing while standing.
(You should use the toilet sitting down. When urinating you can get dizzy and light headed and faint. Obviously stand up from the toilet slowly.)

CP

Today marks the start of Day 11 for me. I weighed 216.2 lbs this morning and my waist measured 42 1/4" around my love handles. I have lost 21.4 lbs in 10 days and 1 3/4 inches around my waist. The waist measurement is misleading as my face definitely looks thinner and I can notice the fat loss in my upper abdominal area.

I had been drinking plain water and sparkling water with the occasional unsweetend iced tea. After watching the Snake Diet videos recommended uplink today I am going to slightly alter what I am drinking.

Cole Davidson recommends mixing a teaspoon of Himalayan pink salt with a teaspoon of No Salt (potassium) with one liter of water. That is what I am drinking right now. (I did add a shot of ACV). You are essentially drinking diluted IV solution.

I think my electrolytes were getting low because for the last two nights I woke up with calf cramps. Hopefully the Snake Juice will take care of that.

Overall I feel fine. I have not been lifting at all and have just been doing a lot of walking. Other than feeling off that one day while driving I haven't noticed any ill effects.

At this point two weeks will be a piece of cake and I may stretch it into three weeks. I will reassess in the next few days.

I can confidently say this is the fastest that I have ever lost weight. I know I have to be careful not to binge when I refeed so I am already looking at my calendar and planning out what I am going to eat on what days.

Regards,
CP

Congratulations! Ideally, you want to assess why you carry all that extra weight and adjust your diet accordingly. About four years ago, after realizing that my health had deteriorated significantly (it really can sneak up on you) and that the medical establishment and their "magic pills" could do nothing to help me, I elected to help myself.

I switched to a mostly plant-based diet that was also mostly organic (about 80-90% plants to 10-20% meat). I eliminated all gluten, dairy, soy, sugar (except fruit), and refined foods. I lost nearly forty pounds and I have stabilized at a loss of about thirty pounds over the past four years.

Not only did my original health issues improve dramatically, but health problems that I would have never linked to my diet also disappeared. For example, after about a year my chronic back and neck pain simply vanished. My intuition (after reading many books and articles on health) is that decades of eating poorly caused chronic inflammation throughout my body that resulted in many health problems.

The human body is an organic machine that runs on fuel. Many decades of placing poor fuel in that machine will cause damage and disfunction -- and ultimately break that machine. Being overweight is just one of many signs of such impending disfunction. It is best to learn this lesson early in life and adjust accordingly. Tip: A radical change in diet often results in failure. Do it in stages (first month eliminate gluten, next month dairy and soy, the next month all refined foods, the next month sugar, then switch from eating mostly meat to eating eating organic plants, etc.).

Congrats - and inspiring. Keep us updated on your progress.

However, I have to say again, fasting is NOT the real way to weight loss. It is only temporary and the weight will come back sooner than you think. I myself still struggle with being a bit over weight despite all the fasting I have done.

The primary reason is fast is to achieve INTERNAL HEALTH.

To lose weight however you need to have a long term strategy of interment fasting, proper food intake and exercise.

A two week or longer fast is meant to give you good internal health. The weight you lose, you will put back on unless you start the long term weight loss plan.

I'm interested in doing a 4-5 day fast but right now I'm taking some antibiotics because I was having recurring eye styes. Can I take medication but only drink water other than that and still have the benefits of a fast? I was actually hoping perhaps a fast might do my eyes some good.

I have found fasting in particular improves eye sight and vision quite a bit. It brings the eyes back to health and all the other senses -- smell, feel, sound.

I can't say for sure but I think it would help the styes. I would check with your doctor. If your antibiotics are external then it may be ok but if internal then I personally would not use them during the fast.

Ask your doctor! Don 't fuck around with some health advice from some random on the internet while taking medication.

Thanks Bain. The antibiotics are internal, they are pills I take each morning. I was having recurring styes because of very dry eyes for 6 months and couldn't get rid of them. I have been taking antibiotics for a month or so because I was at a last resort and this is the only thing that seems to keep them away. The doctor thought I should take them for a few months, a very low dose each day and hopefully my body would fully get that infection out of my body.

I will consider doing the fast without the medication for 4-5 days and then start taking it again afterwards. I had hoped to just do a week long or longer fast and then stop taking the antibiotics but I cant get that much time off work until the summer.

EDIT FOR MIG P

The antibiotics aren't life or death. I was having these eye styes if you know what those are, but they were quite large and annoying so I asked my doctor what to do about them. I would get one, it would go away after a few weeks but then Id get another one a couple weeks later. They are really hideous. So I tried antibiotics.
