Mount Athos is an autonomous part of Greece, filled with Orthodox Christian monasteries--which have been there over a thousand years-- and where all women are banned (including female animals) ; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Athos .

It's a pretty holy place for Christians and they allow visitors daily, provided you've applied for it. Supposed to be an incredible experience, even for those not Orthodox, involving a lot of praying and silence. Also, you get to eat with the monks, and visit the monestaries all over the island (there's about 20, and include Russian Orthodox, Bulgarian, Serbian, Romanian, Greek ).

Anyone visited, or know anyone who visited? I'd like to make the trip one of these days.

Never heard of it, but it sounds amazing. A great place for a spiritual and mental reset. Men living in community for a higher purpose, why is not to like?

This would be a great place to visit with forum members, although it would be a serious thing. They limit orthodox visitor permits to 100 daily, and non-orthodox to 10 daily. Requires a bit of ground work, naturally, but is doable for someone that has the desire. Usually get to stay about 3 days, and it is all basically free. Granted you are expected to take part in worship (basically 7-8 hrs a day) plus help out with any chores... But you can visit any monastery you want on Mount Athos.

Putin at the Holy Mountain in 2016.

The chanting is very beautiful.

Fun fact: The chants are the remnants of ancient Greek music. They would have been immediately familiar to everyone from Homer to King Leonidas, Thucydides, Socrates and Alexander the Great.

Putin's patronage of mount athos is pretty well known, he has made multiple visits. as has prince charles. There is some state support (greece, russia, etc) that has revitalized Mount Athos the past 20-30 years. (also some EU support as well).

This is probably the hardest place in the world to meet women. There are only a few documented cases of women making it to mount athos--usually by deception, disguise. chance of getting a lay is basically impossible.

I think realistically, and in terms of odds, harder to get a lay here than North Korea, b/c at least there are women there. Vatican also seems hard, but you could pick up a tourist chick who's into sex in public, (semi)public areas and rail her in the bathroom so Vatican would be easier than NK. But if we're talking about nailing a chick with a vatican passport, that would be hard, b/c she would have to be the spouse of someone working there, be a worker there herself, be a nun, etc. There are only ~1000 vatican passports or so, so that would be tough. But by no means as hard as trying to get a lay in NK.

Not a nation, granted, but an autonomous province, so it's a national/sub-national entity... That has to count for something, right?
