I started the day off so well with a meat and bone marrow soup...and then...

Feel a bit disgusted with myself right now.

I had been doing so well, too.

Im going to wake up tomorrow with like 3 or 4 giant zits...

On the plus side, tomorrow is a new day, a clean slate.

Today marks 25 days completely refined sugar (ice cream, chocolate etc.), bread, and junk food free

As someone who has been trying to quit refined sugar almost daily for about 3 to 4 years - I can't tell you guys how worth it it is.

You spend less money, you feel better inside (mentally and physically), your skin clears up, and you obviously lose fat/look leaner.

If you guys achieve one thing in 2019 - do this.

Nice. Congrats for finishing 25 days without refined sugar. I have been steadily cutting sugar from the diet (no sugar in coffee etc.), as I suspect I may have diabeetus (runs in the family).

Starting today, I am going cold turkey on sugar, processed foods that may contain sugar.

This thread is an inspiration. Much like many others, I have no problem cutting alcohol, however sugar has been a devious opponent. I have gotten in the habit of reading ingredients for everything I buy. The unknown (downright toxic stuff) that we have been putting in our bodies is absolutely sickening.

I stopped eating junk food almost 2 years ago. I've had patches (mostly a few days over the 3 years) where I've eaten crap but by and large it's been real foods only.

I went cold turkey after eating too many sweets in one sitting and that was it. Never looked back. In the last few days I've really taken my diet to new levels and have cut out all breads and peanut butters which I've been wanting to do for a while now.

I don't use any oils, butter, condiments or anything. Just plain food and fruits as a snack. I love my diet. Don't be afraid to turn your back on junk food forever. I actually get a near ecstatic feeling when I'm eating things like oranges now.

For those of you who want to get leaner without doing any extra gym work, this is for you.

So true.

I'm close to day 30 now, and having a banana now is a similar sensation to what having a chocolate bar used to be like.

Someone I know literally would not believe me when I told them that the other day.

Awesome to hear there are guys that have gone years without refined sugar based foods and junk foods.

I'm going to be aiming to do the same.

When you fail on your plans to quit sugar.... its easy to fail big.

Saturday night I broke down an ate 3 little bags of mini cookies that have been taunting me from a shelf for a week.... then I ended up eating 3 packets of nutella and some cracker sticks.... then I felt like absolute shit. It's like a junkie or alcoholic relapsing, its quite scary.

I'll share this here as well since the story stems from my sugary confession in this thread

I've never bought Nutella in my life... never searched for it online. However there was some in the house I'm currently staying in and I binged on it and then confessed my sins in the "No sugar and Junk food" thread 45 mins ago and I typed that nutella was one of my sins.

Then I open Amazon to order some conditioner for my beard and guess whats the first item recommended for me on the home page....... anyone.... anyone care to guess? NUTELLA

First of all, it seems it could be more productive to either have a set goal in mind for how long we want to avoid junk food OR have a set number of cheat days each week or month for example. We could all look forward to the cheat days together, and motivate each other to stay on track.

In other words, I think its important to have some rewards and not to feel that we can't eat any bad food or sugar at all.

The concept of cheat days is something I find a bit difficult to understand. So you're setting some days aside to reward yourself for staying off a behaviour you're trying to quit, with the same behaviour you're trying to quit. As an adult do you really need that kind of positive reinforcement?

Half a month in, so far has been tough in the beginning with cravings, now those are more occasional. I still eat a lot of fruits (mostly apples, kiwis and oranges), just no junk food or added sugar. Haven't lost any weight I think, mental clarity might be a bit better. Have been sleeping and dreaming a lot more but that might be more related to No fap. I think I will need to evaluate on a longer time frame, so far not much difference.

Btw you guys eat those 0% sugar things that might have aspartame or other sweeteners? For me I do but only for protein shakes and for these jelly things which have 10calories a cup. Aspartame doesn't spike your glycogen so I guess it works, but probably unhealthy for many other reasons. Better to limit it as well.

To be honest for mine it's more about enjoying life. I don't eat the bad things because they're bad for me, I eat them because they taste fucking great and I enjoy eating them. I want to avoid them because they're bad for me, especially in significant quantities.

Always reminds me of this joke when people go hardcore and cut everything out:

I recently turned 65 and had to choose a new primary care physician for my Medicare program.

After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing "fairly well" for my age.

A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, "Do you think I will live to be 80?"

He asked: Do you smoke tobacco or drink alcoholic beverages?"

"Oh no," I replied. "I don't do drugs, either."

"Do you have many friends and entertain frequently?"

"I said, "No, I usually stay home and keep to myself".

"Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?"

I said, "No, my other doctor said that all red meat is unhealthy!"

"Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?"

"No, I don't," I said.

"Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?"

"No," I said. "I don't do any of those things."

He looked at me and said, "Then why do you want to live to 80?

That said I'm now at 10 days and counting. Had a genuine test today as went to the nearby supermarket that stocks all my favourite things, proudly walked out with nothing but the toothpaste I went in for (well, toothpaste at least). Was also craving a pizza for dinner but successfully went down the salad path instead. Little wins.

Still finding avoiding soft drink to be relatively easy but the chocolate cravings are real.

Made it the full month and decided to keep going. So far the effects have been better sleep (and more vivid dreams), skin cleared up, a little bit of weight loss (maybe 1kg) and increased focus. Cravings are largely gone but occasionally they are still there, just shows what an addict I was. The thing I crave most is chocolate and fruit juice. I did pretty much decide to stop drinking sodas indefinitely, I don't miss them and they are shit.

I keep eating fruits and rarely some sweetener replacement (in protein shakes for instance).

Now, since I am not yet ripped and also want to see more longer term effects, I will include a 14 hour intermittent fast to my no sugar diet and I'll do a small home workout every day after my last meal, to see if this would speed up weight loss/getting lean.

Well done! You're on the right path.
I've been on the almost-no-sugar train for several years. Each day I have

1) A little apple juice
2) One tsp sugar in the afternoon coffee
3) One square of dark chocolate at night

All my food is made from scratch using real foods, the type that spoil. Nothing processed or boxed and rarely canned. To get ripped, you gotta learn to cook well.

I too keep a 14-hour daily fast, from 8 pm (end of dinner) to 10 am (big breakfast).

The result: All these things, together with HIIT class and regular iron pumping, resulted in a four-pack appearing square in the middle of my abdomen shortly after my 40th birthday. It surprised me too. That was three years ago, and since then, I've gotten lots of admiration from las chicas -- they often make comments about my arms, or my abs, and sometimes I catch them looking too, esp in public. Again, this surprised me. Women literally never admired my upper body before now. It's entirely due to 1) very-low-sugar, low-carb diet, and 2) better, more intense exercise.

I can't recommend it enough. I don't know why I waited so long.

Also: Be sure to remove all industrially-produced seed oils (canola, corn, palm, etc) from your diet. They are absolutely terrible for overall health. Cook only with butter or olive oil -- and if you're trying to lose weight, even those should be used very, very sparingly until you reach your goal weight.

DM me if you have questions. I love talking about nutrition.

White rice is terrible for you because its glycemic load is so high. I view it as a treat on par with potato chips -- something to have maybe once a month, when I make a creamy asparagus risotto.

Brown rice has a much lower glycemic load, so it can be eaten more frequently, but I still don't touch the stuff. Try farro instead. It's nutty and chewy and has fairly high protein, for a grain.

By the end of the week my living circumstances will change to where I'll be the only one bringing food into the house.

I know It's a cop out as I should have more self control but sharing a kitchen and meals with people who are not concerned about diet makes it easy to drop the discipline.

I'm essentially going to follow a wholefood / low carb diet with emphasis on actually cooking meals rather than eating things out of packets and cans. Also leaning more towards meat. The thing I need to remember is to be careful with portion size. Hopefully cooking more often ups my skills. If I stumble on some good recipes I'll share them.

Since quitting booze roughly a month ago I've been craving (and eating) a shit ton of sugar. I'm hoping this will pass but I'm not so sure! I've never had much of a sweet tooth in my life but the no alcohol thing has changed that. I'm gonna need to take notes from this thread.

New to the thread, and this if one of the first post I read.

You can easily make paleo ice-cream with coconut milk, and dark chocolate (85% min) is extremely healthy and helpful for dealing with sugar cravings.

Why are humans so addicted to sugar? Because its an amazing source of energy, for times when we were in constant life threatening situations. Nowadays we over consume it so much it is toxic. But it can be replaced. And it can sometimes be used in small quantities.

Why the apple juice? Basically every fruit juice is high in fructose, which is also basically sugar.

For coffee u can easily skip the sugar for Stevia, im a big fan of the liquid one. I mix it with coconut milk + MCT oil or grassfed butter for a bulletproof.

I would try to push to the 16 hours intermittent-fasting, seems like its around the sweet spot

PS: what kind of dark chocolate u got?

EDIT: for fasting 18h seems actually the best [Image: 0*vS4gRUMWRHQcP_1R.]

1. First thing in the morning, the natural sugars in two ounces of apple juice really wakes me up. That's why I drink it. I mix it with a pint of water.
2. Even Mark Sisson puts sugar in his coffee. It's not the end of the world.
3. I've tried to fast 16 hours. It works once in a while, but my body usually lets me know that it needs food, NOW, at hour 14.
4. Dark chocolate: Theo is probably my favorite.
5. I drink liquor but avoid mixers. Gin on the rocks with some citrus, occasionally a touch of honey.

It could also be the winter weather, if you're living in a cold climate. Our bodies generally want more carbs/sugars during the colder months. I've noticed it's a lot easier to stick with meat/veg in the spring, summer, and fall.

I second this. I eat really clean may to November but when those dark months come and up the hill all day, the sugar and carb demands from the body are massive. It’s very hard to choose salad when the days are short and the temps are cold
