I'm in. Hoping this thread is as good for me as the 1 year drinking wagon thread thread-30625.html. I've now been alcohol free for nearly 2 years thanks to that thread. Like the OP I have a sweet tooth and whilst my diet is pretty good I do end up slipping from time to time. I could do better.

Right, I've got a stock pile of easter eggs to give away to people I don't like.

That's pretty damn cool that that thread helped you kick alcohol. Would be very cool if this thread inspires a lot of us to improve our health as well.

So I'm wrapping up day 4 of No Sugar No Junk and I had to mention something, I started having dreams again. I mean I know supposedly we always dream but never remember our dreams, but the last two or three days I've had very vivid dreams.

Also, normally I have trouble going to bed, but these last few days I've actually been getting sleepy and then I just think "Oh, it's time for bed," and then I've been going to bed, getting a good night's sleep, and even waking up earlier than I need to and getting a little extra sleep. It's neat.

Normally I stay awake too late and then I regret it when I'm drowsy the next day, then sleep when I get home, then wake up, stay up late, and repeat the off balance pattern.

But these last few days have been very different, I'm getting really good sleep.

Interesting observation about sleep pattern. Less sugar will give you a more even energy pattern throughout the day. Less peaking and then crashing. I'll look out for any effects for me in the next week or so.

47yo woman - the moderator - is a hot bangable woman at her age. Dropped sugar 10 years ago after already having limited long before that. Sure - she likely has some botox done, but 99,99% don't look like that even with botox.

Many of her female friends followed suit.

I told this to my girl and she dropped sugar immediately as well. I can say that it improved her look somewhat over a few months. I guess the effects at a later age are even stronger.

Also - when it works on women, then it works on men too.

Unlike alcohol, we can debate until eternity what falls under "no sugar & junk food" and what does not. I guess every man has to decide for himself.

But I'm still gonna throw the question out there:

What's the RVF consensus on dark chocolate? I mean the 80-85%+ cacao stuff.

Dark chocolate has numerous health benefits, but unless you eat 100% cacao, there's still going to be some added sugars in it. Would you allow it?

It is nearly impossible to avoid all carbs. The goal (for us keto people) is to keep the net carb consumption low enough that your body has to run on ketones (derived from fat). When you get under 50 grams of net carbs a day, you are entering ketosis territory. The hardcore keto people maintain 20 grams or less. Me.. I found 35 or less works for me (I eat a lot of veggies).

Chocolate is a good source of fat. I use the 90% stuff for snacks and to help keep my fat intake 60%+ of my calorie intake.

This thread is *no sugar*, not *no carb*. There is another thread for keto.

Regarding dark chocolate, I would exclude it. Even 80% cocoa chocolate has like 25% sugar. You can get the health benefits from eating more vegetables.

Those that practice it stress that you have to take in zero sugar.

But it's easy to sidestep - get the sugarfree dark chocolate and have some dry fruit with it. The body treats this combination strangely enough differently.

I've had very dark chocolate (90-95% cocoa, brands: Lindt, Ghirardelli) and I end up eating almost the whole 100g bar at once. People say it tastes like cardboard but not to me. And it seems to activate the 'oh yeah, this is what sugar tastes like' and it's downhill from there.

Is dark chocolate the gateway sugar?

High quality 100% cocoa chocolate is sugar-free and tastes amazing.

I like Pralus Le 100% but there are others too.

Dark chocolate tastes bad to me, so I don't really have an answer on whether to include it or not. I've eaten it a few times in my life and it makes me want to spit it out, so, that's my two cents on it.

Day 5 almost complete, guys!

I was buying some water at my local Mexican carniceria and there were some bubu lubus, paleta payasos, and zingers sweets/chocolates in front of me, and I had ZERO cravings for them.

For my second meal of the day, which is usually where I crack because it's unplanned, what I've been doing now is ordering a plate at the Mexican carniceria close by, and it comes with two meats, plus rice and beans. Sometimes I skip the rice and beans, but it just depends.

So what's super cool about these Mexican carnicerias, well the better ones anyway, is that they have like 12 kinds of meat that's already cooked that you can choose from for your plate. You get two big servings of meat for each plate, and the 12 meats, as if 12 meats wasn't enough already, vary a bit each day. So one day I may have lamb and beef tripe, another day suadero (a thin cut of meat from the intermediate part of the cow or pork between the belly and the leg) and buche (pork stomach), and another day barbacoa (made from the slow-cooked head of a cow) and cabrito (baby goat), and another day birria (goat stew meat made using a broth base of roasted peppers) and soft chicharron (not the crispy pork rind, this is a soft, supple pork rind with some of the fat still attached, marinated and boiled in salsa) and other days beef fajita, chicken fajita, or tinga de pollo (shredded chicken with a special sauce on it, pure protein), for example.

So I get a good serving of any two of those meats on a plate for less than $10, it's absurd. They also let me order any weight of any of those meats and buy it that way, so if I just want a pound of one type of meat and a pound of another, that's totally cool. My other option is eating at the UT Club, and the meats there are good as well, prime rib and cowboy ribeye, for example, but I've gotten out of the habit of eating there lately because of the time restrictions.

So anyhow, I love that Mexican carniceria, and it's a cool perk of knowing Spanish to know about these places and be able to order food there (the staff can only speak basic English). There's big differences in both the quality and the variety of the meats from one Mexican carniceria to another, too, so if you explore these places to get your fast, delicious proteins, check out many of them.

So that high protein intake basically means I don't get hungry the rest of the day, and have been able to maintain no sugar no junk.

It's pretty cool so far, and I intend to keep it up. I also ask the lady behind the counter which of the meats are cooked with the most oil and which oils are used, so she gives me the inside scoop on all that.

So let's keep going with this thing, if we can keep this up for over a month, we could possibly change our lives completely.

Onward, men!

So I survived the business trip mostly intact, I'm doing great this weekend, and now I'm office to Vegas for conference for a week...

Luckily I'm in a resort room, complete with kitchen. Hoping it'll stay easy, and that I'll be able to hit the hotel gym, or a gym a few times. No after hours events are scheduled for this one, so that lowers the temptation.

Let's see how this week goes.

Stay Strong!

Good thread. Reading this thread makes me realise I'm not alone with this addiction to sugar.
Finally about three months ago I started getting this feeling as if spiders were crawling on my feet when I was In bed in the evening or morning. Something made me suspect diabetes, and in the meantime it gradually got worse, turning to serious itching on lower legs which led to sores developing - Shit got real. If that isn't a wake up call, then nothing is. I started conscious eating, being aware of everything I eat. I realised everything has sugar, and I also realised that all carbohydrates turn to sugar - that's a big one. Got that one from Sarah Hallberg (https://youtu.be/da1vvigy5tQ)
Went sort of keto, but I try to avoid red meats and mostly eat fish. My downfall was always chocolate and other sweets, I realised the mor carbohydrates you eat the more sugar you need - It literally helps the body absorb carbs. It all made sense. It's literally an addiction. I've also realised that large portions are the enemy. I go to buy yoghurt or anything at the supermarket and used to always get the large container, telling myself I wouldn't eat it all, but we all know that never happens. I've forced myself to only buy small portions when I have A craving, and it seems to be working..

Work in progress!

Day 2 of cutting out sugar. My sugar intake is mostly from carbonated soft drinks though I do occasionally eat sweets and desserts. Cut it all out completely.

Changing my diet too. I currently mostly get delivery food in, so will be starting to cook my own meals.

This is only a little victory but after skiing for 5 hours today and confronted with a buffet of various deserts and carb laden foods, I chose a Caesar salad, thus preserving the no sugar + low carb plaçe I’m transitioning to post ski season.

It felt good to make this choice and even better to eat.

Is pasta and white rice "junk food"? I ask because from what I understand it has similar effects on blood sugar levels. Should they be avoided altogether?

Sweets and desserts I can handle, but staying away from Italian food is gonna be hard [Image: lol.gif]

It's up to you. If you feel great and accomplish your goals while including those inputs, then more power to you.

Main thing is to avoid the undebatable stuff, the creme puffs, the chocolate, the candies, sweet bread, the cookies, etc.

Whether you do or don't give up the other stuff I suspect will depend a lot on your own genetics, and also, your cultural background.

For me right now, I do have two slices of wheat bread a day. I actually prefer to eliminate it, but that's what holds my turkey + avocado + bacon + mushroom sandwich together during lunch, so for convenience, I eat it.

Since going no sugar no junk, my meat intake has gone up very much, while everything else has dropped a lot, with sugar and junk going to zero.

I also have pistachios here and there, I like them.

But no sugar, even if it's snuck inside cranberries, for example, just no sugar, so that means no cranberries.

So I do eat fruits and veggies here and there.

All right, wanted to give an update. I'm on day 15 of no sugar no junk.

I'm eating about 1.5 pounds of meat every day, usually three kinds of meat every day (from every part of the pig, cow, chicken, fish, lamb, etc), plus some fruits every few days.

I'll have a small amount of veggies every day too.

So, I lost 2 pounds and one belt loop, but I'm never hungry. I actually eat a ton.

The cravings for sugar are gone, 100%. No more dreams of eating ice cream and chocolate, then waking up and thinking, "No, I forgot! I wasn't supposed to eat that!" Then feeling horrible in my dream, but then waking up and realizing it was only a dream.

I'm going to keep this up as long as I can, but it looks like as long as I eat enough meat every day, at this point, I'm over the hump...

Godspeed.

When you start reading lables of food in the supermarket, its amazing the shit you see in them. Sugar in bean salads? Fuck that, make your own stuff.

Yeah, I don't remember what it was I showed my brother, but I was like, this is off-limits, and he was like, why?

Showed him the label and sure enough, sugar. He was surprised.

They stick it in places you wouldn't imagine.

It's almost like they're trying to just get you to try it any way they can...just once, just a little bit...

All right, I'm on day 22 of No Sugar, No Junk.

So far so good.

I'm surprised we haven't had any "I was a little bitch" posts yet...

Has the thread been that successful at getting everyone to quit?

Or are some folks being too much of a little bitch to post that they were a little bitch on a certain day?

What's the real story? How much hamstering is going on here...

Also, I'm not sure if I mentioned this earlier, but I noticed something else. One of my upper molars and one of my lower molars had been a bit sensitive before this, but only a bit, I could only feel it when I brushed my teeth. Still, I was thinking I was probably going to have to get a filling on the lower one and a root canal on the upper one (because I'd just got a filling on that one a few months before).

Well, since cutting junk food, I can now brush my teeth vigorously and there's zero sensitivity.

Saved myself some dental work.

Ok so after a week on holiday post ski season I’m now full on the bandwagon.

I’m basically going to be following the primal blueprint model of a long term sustainable way of eating which include no junk, nothing processed.

I know what will happen next, I will get a headache for a couple of days due to carb withdrawal and I’ll find myself in the odd spot here and there where I’ve not planned my meals correctly so I’ll be out somewhere and starving and not have access to non junk food. The other thing that will happen is my body will dump a load of water weight it doesn’t need which it was retaining to deal with the carbs and inflammation from them.

I really like eating this way, no bloating, no gas, loads of energy. It’s just I possible to do in the winter.

Posting here for accountability.
