Who is the greatest living musician?

Two of Captain Beefheart's guitarists are still playing: Bill Harkleroad (Zoot Horn Rollo) and Gary Lucas. Both are extremely inventive and original. Here's Lucas with a solo guitar piece from the final Beefheart album in '82:

Enrico Morricone. Actually makes some Tarantino movies appear better than they are.

This dude is a legend. A lot of people are familiar with the Jean Reno movie "The Professional". Not many remember an older French film of the same name with Jean-Paul Belmondo. Chi Mai was a badass tune.

Music is not a competition and there is no such thing (from an objective standpoint) as “greatest”.

What moves you emotionally may fall flat for other listeners, due to personal preference/predisposition to being affected by the mood that the music is attempting to to convey.

La Piovra, another masterpiece. With such a vast amount of work I think he deserves it's own appreciation thread.

André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra. He basically revived classical music with his new interpretations. Yanni can definitely share the first place with him.

For my personal taste — Hans Zimmer. Anyone can sing and write songs. Not too many people have what it takes to compose and direct musicians , choruses, and instrumental ensembles alike while also evolving with the modern day. John Williams comes in second but he’s a bit too conservative for my taste.

I saw Zimmer in concert 3 times last year (Prague, Vienna, LA) My travels just happened to coincide with his tour. I highly recommend hearing him and his full orchestra live if you get the chance.

Eric Clapton for me.

However, I'm going to give an honorable mention to Eminem. While I'm not the biggest rap fan; there's no denying the sheer talent he had/has, and the cultural impact he had back in the 2000's.

Ennio Morricone. Enough said, it is greatness in just two words.

I was going to bring him up but the OP said we could throw in just one name per person.

Everyone's heard Ecstasy of Gold. It gets used in movies, TV commercials, Metallica opens concerts with it, etc...

But how many people have heard this hidden gem?

If this doesn't make the hair on the back of your neck stand up then you're not human.

That's the voice of Edda Dell'Orso, Ennio's muse. She really brought his pieces alive. Vintage RAI TV Edda:

I know he's a libtard, but I'd have to go with Bruce Springsteen. He's still putting out music that's relevant and packs a punch.

If he's not the best, he's definitely the hardest working. He tours relentlessly, plays 3 hour shows, and puts out an album every few years.

You want to know the only thing you can assume about a broken down old man? It's that he's a survivor.

Evgeny Kissin. He is the Fred Astaire of the piano. His performances are ridiculous to anyone who knows anything about playing piano.

I wouldn't say he's the best, but he's for sure one of the hardest working.

He's a good musician and all, but he's most well known for playing marathon back-to-back shows and wrecking his body while touring non-stop...so i'd say he's an embodiment of the phrase, "If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough"

For me it's Gordon Lightfoot. Canadian Folksinger unfortunately I disagree with some of his political views but he is an amazing songwriter, guitarist and who ever did this video? Damn!! Not the original, but still, Damn! Just as a side note, Dylan and Gordon were great friends. Gordon turned down Woodstock when Bob asked him to play, "When Bob Dylan invites you to do a show, don't say no."

Another vote for Ennio Morricone.

Dude has composed more film scores than anyone ever, and written a ton of amazing music.

No other living composer can compare.

Reported you for a severe warning.

Greatest musician alive is a tough thing in our times.

Is it the one who sells the most after having been promoted by the globalist machine before?

In terms of skills and abilities I would wager that the greatest musicians are barely known by the masses. But that is my guess - maybe some excellent ones are in the background as composers and I am sure that they partly hate their job creating bullshit.

Thanks for the Evgeny Kissin. I hadn't seen him perform before...holy smokes, that is nuts. There's a youtube video of just the encores for that performance, 50 minutes of encores! you can see the audience in the 'pit' area standing throughout. It's remarkable.

Well, best? yea, there is no best, but to kind of step-up and give a boring, technically correct answer, there is a legit genius named Jacob Collier who is now 23 years old. His understanding of harmony is extraordinary. I don't listen too his music that much, it's a bit sweet, but the harmony that's going on is awe inspiring. Musicians just kind of laugh, it's so ridiculous, like Evgeny Kissins' ability on the piano.

Herbie Hancock himself, videos an odd melody and challenges Jacob to harmonize it. At 1:24 his harmonization begins.

This is just plain scary:
