It's not like it's a big house on a sprawling piece of property in the middle of nowhere. 13 people out of a family of 15 live in a suburb and just never go outside again for long enough to become severely emaciated, and nobody notices.

Parents quoted as saying they talk to them often, but hadn't visited in five years or talked to the grandkids in a good while.

Blows my mind.

The reference to the 17-year-old girl who looked to be 10-years-old reminded me of an old, harrowing news story that was known as "Genie, the Feral Child."

Most of you are probably too young to remember this one. Heck, this is even before my time, but it was still talked about when I was growing up. Here is a story from a UK paper that details the life of Genie, a girl who has held in total captivity by her mentally-disturbed father.

Speaking of all things "disturbed," if you get upset easily at really awful stories of child abuse, don't click on that link. Genie's father made these parents look good by comparison.

How on earth did they finance all of this? Even if they keep the childrenen enslaved and malnourished it's still a lot of food and space that needs to be covered, and neither of them are mentioned as working.
