Tokyo emergency my ATM card broke no cash

The chip in my card does not work and I can not find an open bank to get an advance. I currently have 55 yen and $10 I am so fucked right now. I called my bank and they said oh we will send you a card but it will take a month by mail wtf great customer service.

Is there anyone around that can help me out? I can meet and do PayPal to you and you can hook me up with cash. I am near the Oshige station AKA Sky Tree. I can WhatsApp or FaceTime audio pm me for info.

I've warned plenty of cashless travelers that this can happen, but they never listen.

Sounds like you're sleeping in the park tonight (it's legal).

I'm not in Japan, but judging from his post history and joindate, he is genuine.

I hope one of the members in Tokyo sees this.

Usually I do have a bank on me but the one time I don't I get burned. I am in my airbnb apartment so at least I have water and no need to sleep in the park.

Not bogus, maybe dumb yes.

You will probably not believe me when I say I do not have a credit card at all. My bank of ten plus years would not even give me a prepaid card since I am in the 500s. The reason for low credit is being old school and always using cash or what I have in checking to make purchases. My low credit rating is also because I was nearly foreclosed on after being fired from my job of 19 years and getting behind on the mortgage.
Also do you realize no banks are open on the weekend here to receive wire transfers. I emailed the moneygram for hours since there is conflicting info online and it's a two hour walk.

Not to hit a man down...But why would you travel abroad without a funds backup? Doesn't need to be a credit card. Get a 2nd bank account, carry cash, bitcoin, travelers cheques...there's a lot of options man.

Edit: Can't you just book a hotel online with your card number? Most place should be able to run your card as a manual entry too.

Maybe you have tried this but when I was in Japan my ATM card only seemed to work at 7-11's and banks, other random ATMs never worked for me. It has something to do with the network my bank was connected to. So if your ATM card didn't work at a few ATMs, maybe try a few more and hit a 7-11 ATM just to be sure.

I hit about 8 machines including 2 7-11s, my chip has broken before but this card is fairly new.

I am good as far as accommodation, problem is I can not eat or use the trains. I suppose I can jump the train but what are the consequences?

Well now you're really gonna be pissed because Monday is Martin Luther King day. Nothing in Tokyo will be open.

Listen brah if this is for real all you gotta do is call up western union send money from the debit card to yourself. There are a whole lot of 24 hour places you can get cash. Just don't send more than a few hundred.

Also not to kick a guy who's down, but your quote there is one of my favorites. I love when people say "well, I don't have credit cards because I'm old school and only pay cash. I don't buy it if I can't afford it."

It's like thats some badge of honor. Then at the last minute they throw in "oh yeah, and my foreclosure." That is why you have bad credit. Not because you are old school.

Aloha!

Even if the chip is dead, there's still a strip and the numbers can be inputted to achieve the same thing. A WesternUnion or bank can help you work this.

No offense, but traveling in this position is sloppy. If no one can help you, I recommend you go home and sort your life out.

The US Embassy in Tokyo can help get you a repatriation loan for a flight home. More info on that here: https://jp.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-ser...#collapse7

When I get my first credit card at 22, my credit rating was 750. Never had a card before in my life and a bucket load of students loans too.

I will get it sorted with or without the forums help and continue on to Bangkok Monday.

The beauty of being me is I have suffered so many setbacks in life that this just a minor inconvenience.

Dude I just told you how to fix the problem. Western Union. They do it over the phone. Problem solved.

Kona saves the day again, but does anybody say thank you. Hell no.

Can you link your phone to android/apple Pay? Perhaps there's a way to charge things in the mean time that way

In the US if the card reader can't read your chip card after 3 times it'll make you swipe.

Not sure if it works abroad.

Regardless of your poor planning, OP, you have my empathy. If there was a way for me to wire you some spending cash, I would, but unfortunately China is rather behind the times and it would be impossible for me to wire you money short notice even if there was a place for you receive it in Japan.

If someone in Tokyo is willing to give you money, I'll stand in as your guarantor and pay them back in the event for whatever reason they never get paid back. I'm good for $100-200 depending on how much you need before you move onto Bangkok.

Kona's solution works. I was in a similar situation recently. Sending money to yourself using Western Union is super easy, and you can do it online in minutes.
