Chiang Mai datasheet 2017

My experience in Chiang Mai was nowhere near as bad as a few people are making it out to be. Yeah if you stick to the old city and Tinder you’re going to be in Thirst Valley because you are one of literally millions of other probably tall decent looking white dudes looking to dip your mango slice in some tasty Thai sticky rice. The best girls I met were in person and far outside the main city, for example CMU. Although you can meet hot chicks both local and foreign at Zoe in Yellow complex after 11 PM or so and then Spicy after midnight. Yes you will have to play Frogger to avoid the ladyboys but who cares. Plenty of thin cute Thai girls to approach and many are nice. Also CM is the easiest city I’ve ever been to to bang tourist girls and flight attendants. Screen for the non-western ones and it’s fine.

If you're over 35 yes I don't the the point going to Chiang Mai. Many older guys are thirsty as fuck, leftists, white knights that will defend to death their chubby tan-skin Thai clubrats. On tinder bottom of the barrel girls focus on farangs here. Weirdos, fatties, tan-skin, daddy-issues, rape victims... all the losers who got rejected by Thai guys. I'd recommend being very selective on Tinder and to focus on a handful of girls instead of matching them all.

For Koreans / Chinese girls, Nimman is one of the best day-game spots that I've ever seen, tons of 7s very approachable, but need to find girls that are alone and they usually just stay a few days. For Thai girls the only decent spots I know are Maya and Bangkok Hospital (they hire almost only cute nurses, fucked one of them and I try to get Lines every time I visit the hospital). Recently I've been banging my Chinese neighbor on the regular and it's really soothing to be with a girl with an IQ over 90. Hearing Thai girls croaking english in baby language is not rewarding at all.

I'd recommend to be careful for the Zoe bar, the guards are a bunch of losers who white knights girls there in the hope of getting their approbation. They'll beat up any drunk farang if they feel they can get away with it. Personally I avoid this kind of place completely.

I believe it got popularized for being cheaper than BKK and being well serviced by international flights. Whether or not the Digital Nomad community actually exists there is speculative (I imagine the number of hood rats and travel bums must outnumber them by a huge margin).

You would think a semi-successful Digital Nomad would be earning enough money and would be concerned more about taxes - not saving $200 a month on apartment rentals.

I’m a budget traveler. I’m not afraid to ride a scooter. I’m also smart enough to use a 3m mask to filter out pollution. Maybe Chang Mai is for me.

I actually first heard about Chang Mai as a retirement haven for the 50+ expats looking to stretch their retirement pensions. They were more concerned about good hospitals than the bar scene. This is pre-internet.

A popular expat I read the book of in the 1990s and followed his blog in early 2000s was there doing his budget life thing. He retired at 35 with his wife and started traveling to cheap livable places around the world.

He didn’t waste money on dumb shit. His main concern was being comfortable and traveling until his social security kicked in. Then he could do more expensive places and still have all his free time.

For their needs CM was good but after 5-10 years he noted it had attracted a lot of people in the same way that Bali has. He complained of traffic and rising costs. I think he left years ago.

Depends on what you define as successful. Most digital nomads I know work on bullshit projects that go nowhere and consume all their free time. They my talk about living close to the mountains but they barely see nor do anything active.

I’d rather have all my free time but do a little research/leg work (read, google, comparison shop) and take a little risk/accept a little discomfort (ride a scooter/wear a mask). I could probably see and do everything in CM in a few weeks to a month, get a few bangs, and move on.

At least for a short term visit. I myself couldn’t live there long term. I’d get bored after a few weeks. Unlike a digital nomad I’m not tethered to fast internet nor a workspace routine. I like having WiFi and chocolate muffins but it’s not a requirement.

Anyone in Chang Mai probably isn’t successful anyway. That’s obvious from everyone saying they rarely see attractive westerners and when they do s/he is passing through.

There are very few successful digital nomads.

There are a lot of programmers and digital commuters who work at night (western hours). They get paid a western salary and jack up the price in the same way the 50+ retirement crowd does.

This is why Thailand changed the visa rules recently. They are ok with old retirees who pump money into the economy without working. They don’t like young people coming to “work” in droves.

Thai govt got scared they take away jobs (good jobs) from the poorly educated university students. That’s not the real problem, but who cares?

It’s too hard to get people to stop fucking and having kids while expanding the economy to create jobs. Banning foreigners is easier. But us foreigners are smart and now abusing tourist visas to get 9 months anyway.

TM I recognized you miles away.

Yes I agree it's actually better to live in a minimalist fashion. I'm actually gonna change condo soon, will take a bareback room and take more time to do cool stuff like learning juijitsu / thai boxing, swimming, going to Pai, and now it's the winter so it's actually ok to do foot excursions during some days. Might order again some drugs cocktails too, I feel like doing some ketamine again.
