Is it worth getting a British passport?

Is it worth getting a British passport?

I'd say it's not worth it. The US or UK passports being "the best in the world" is pretty much a 20th century thing. The international standing of countries like Britain, France, etc is going to drop considerably during the next 10-15 years, as they progressively turn into islamic republics, or unreliable third world cesspools.

The reason is that there will be
1. more undesirable moslem citizens of those countries causing all kinds of trouble abroad, which will cause more scrutiny to those passports in the future and
2. an increasing flood of White "refugees" from the war zones in the West that will start to annoy the locals in the countries we move to in droves.

On the other hand, currently "second rate" but "clean" countries with no moslems and no international feuds will be seen as more desirable. Major Western countries regularly piss off China and others, so it might be that one day you get in trouble for being one of their citizens.

When real shit will start happening in France, Britain, etc, millions will start to want to settle into Thailand, for example. Then at some point the locals may considerably raise their visa requirements for citizens of those countries. While a citizen from Poland or Hungary will not be seen as being part of that lot and will remain visa-free.

Another reason to worry with major countries passports is that as those countries unravel, they will start taxing their citizens on their worldwide income, just as the US does. Germany already had this in plan a few years ago, then they dropped it, but for how long?

OP if you get a British passport don't forget to change your name to Mohammed. I heard that's what the cool kids in England prefer these days.

Dreams are like horses; they run wild on the earth. Catch one and ride it. Throw a leg over and ride it for all its worth.

I'm of the camp "more passport is better" if it doesnt cost you an arm and a leg. 1200 pounds is nothing, get it. The world order changes so quick these days. Might be Poland reign supreme, might be that UK is the only sane land left while Europe burns, nobody knows.

One thing to be careful about: read up on tax systems and tax duties for British citizens. I know France is a tax slavery system even if you earn money oversea, not sure about UK.

Mikestar: make more money and get the British citizenship. The benefits far outweigh the costs. Not even close.

Malone: why not get your kid Canadian as well? Very valuable to have.

It’s in the top 3 most accepted passports in the world.

I would go for it.

It has a prestige that maybe a Polish passport doesn’t. I imagine as a British citizen it would easier to immigrate to other countries v Polish. Maybe not always in a procedural sense, but an inherent bias towards a Brit passport.

British citizens certainly get preferential treatment in most of the Commonwealth countries on the immigration front. Though not sure you want to leave Britain for the likes of Canada or Australia but there are certainly some better options in there as well like the Caribbean options for example.

I have it in addition to my US passport and my indian ICO card. I think it's worth it, even tho I barely use it. Just think about later on in life it's a safety net. You could always start working there and collect that British pension when you retire if needed. Or what if Poland doesn't cover healthcare and UK does, you may have health problems later in life. Who knows what will happen?

UK isn't part of the EU anymore either so it's not like blanket coverages or anything will apply.

What does UK passport give you as an advantage that Polish passport doesn't offer?

I have a friend in same situation in New York, who is Italian, he doesn't get US passport on purpose because if he ever moves back to Italy, he has to pay double tax.

^You're right except from the point I thought of earlier - for work such as for example becoming an english teacher abroad, they want native english speakers and having UK passport makes me a native speaker - polish does not.

Is it worth getting a British passport?

For the OP, when you are finally stable, I'd probably spring for the UK passport for many reasons already stated here.

As a follow on question: I have dual with UK and US passports. I've never worked in the UK and have worked my entire adult life in the US. I rarely travel using my UK passport and have been thinking about not getting a replacement when it expires. From some of the research I've read (mostly financial institutions research) is that Brexit will generally be negative for the UK - articles about banks setting up in Frankfurt or other parts of EU, housing prices being impacted, etc.

Anyone's crystal ball provide thoughts as to how this turns out for the UK? Given what I've read thus far, I'm not sure I'm seeing the upside of keeping my passport. Even some of the posts about UK pensions, healthcare, etc. - will those be around for folks in their 20-40s today?

Would like to hear from those closer to the topic then I am.

The UK state pension scheme is probably the worst in the undeveloping world. It's completely paid out of annual tax revenue, bar some which has been set aside for civil servants. So, rather than doing what most people around the world do for their pensions: invest and compound interest for 100s% return, the inspired Labour government of 1946 bought a few years in government at the sake of selling the youth of today out.

The pension age was 60 not long ago, now it's penciled in as 68 for pretty much anyone reading this. But it's going to be successively pushed back, reduced and those with their own savings are going to be pushed out of the state pension they paid into for 40 years. Many are going to have to put their house up as equity to get by.

Pensions now make up 20% of the UK budget and that's going up at 0.3% per year despite the above mentioned age adjustments and mass 3rd world immigration, which they are still telling us an aging population needs, despite their low labour participation rates and skills. For every year, the retirement age is pushed back another five months. At this rate the actual retirement age for me will be 83 and 31% of the government budget will consist of uninvested pension payments.

The NHS is going to go further down the pan too. At this point it's a death panel and faux consultancy that specialises in refusing to diagnose you.

Who knows what will happen, but nothing good is going to happen here. Fortunately for me I've only paid £86 in 'national insurance' and have handled this myself.

No one I know my age has planned for retirement and I doubt that will change. The best thing that can happen is Corbyn gets in and ruins everything, to the extent that we have to go back to a meritocracy.
