Israel Salsa Guide

Even though i haven't posted here a lot, i do come once every other month and recieve great information. The majority of this forum contribute with useful and insightful threads that i and many others enjoy. I think it would be rude not to return the favor.

Recently an issue has been raised with hype messages. I agree with what has been said. However, Israel still is a very favorable place for foreigners and so part of the hype that my past messages had must created is because this is truly the general vibe towards foreign people.

I have been dancing salsa regularly for a year now. I have a lot of experience with the different venues since i tend to switch between them all the time. Israel salsa scene was big in the end of the 90´s beginning of the 21th century until it has stabled to what it is now - 10 - 20 clubs with a constant flow of people.

I would pay good money to watch the amazement of the girl's face once she realize she is talking to a tourist in some of the places i am about to mention. Some of this venues just don't see a foreigner. period. you wouldn't be able to google for example http://www.yanivyalon.co.il/
since it is a Hebrew only site and does not appear in the israeli salsa organization site.

So what i did is to prepare a list for you that would scale from the least exotic factor you would make to the greatest. And also would give just general information about the club itself.
Only clubs that i have been to would be on this list and you may find some other good venues here: Israeli Salsa Organization club guide
I decided not to include a few clubs that cater for the 30+ crowd and also some that are just plain awful.

5: Havana Music Club
This one is located in a very accesable area in Tel-Aviv."Derech Hashalom 5 St. Tel-Aviv". You take a train from anywhere in the country even from the airport to Hashalom Station Tel-Aviv. Yo go out from the station, turn left and you walk by foot 10 minutes until you see the club from your left. with a taxi it is something like 1 minute and would cost like 15 shekels. (4-5)$
This is by far the most modern and luxurious salsa club, with the best looking women. the crowd tends to lean towards the 30's. Entrance is 50 NIS. Nice bar from where you can observe the dancers. Since it is very classy i won't be surprised to meet tourists there.

4: Studio B
Time:
Friday at 10:30pm - 5:00am
Location:
Even Gvirol 124 St. Tel-Aviv
the "Meea" tower

getting here would be by taxy. This is the most balanced clubs of them all. It has great down to earth crowd. Also great variety since you can choose from 4 different rooms the latin dance you like the most. The different options are: Cuban salsa, LA salsa, Colombian salsa, Samba and bachata.

3: Exciting
This one is located inside the university in a shelter that was transformed into a hall where different body shape classes are taking place.
Time: 30 of October - 31 of July every Monday at 21:30, Ben-Gurion University Of The Negev, Beer-Sheva.
http://in.bgu.ac.il/en/Pages/default.aspx
It opens once university starts at the end of October and last until the end of the spring semester tests. To get in the university just say you are an exchange student and forgot your card or alternatively say that you have been invited to the salsa evening. Inside the university you should head over to building number 72 (-1) floor. Ask the guard how to get there. if you go at 21:30 you would probably meet somebody else who go there that can take you there.

2: Gimel Dorms, Ben-Gurion University Of The Negev
Location: Gimel Dorms
Time: every Tuesday 21:00, same as exciting, end of October till the end of July.
This one is tricky to understand. You walk east from Uni to the junction of Arlozorov St. And Shderot Ben-Gurion St..
at that junction you will see a complex of buildings. this is the Gimel Dorms. Same procedure as before about getting in.
once inside there isn't any marks or signs on how to get there. As you enter walk straight through the building after 10 meters once you arrived at an open space on your left you will encounter shelter enter it and go down the stairs. By now you already hear the loud salsa music so you know you came to the right place.

this leads us to the final club, at number 1:
Yaniv Yelon
Location: Hasadna 6 St. Kvar Saba
20 minutes on the outskirts of Tel-Aviv.
for time press "השבוע בסלסה..." on the left top corner of the homepage to see the weekly schedule.
This one is the most adventurous but also the most rewarding.
Take a cab or rent a car. Park your car at the local Mall that is right infront of the club. The club itself is inside an industrial building outside the mall complex. It looks dodgy but believe me the best of our nation's youth are going there with no fear and there isn't really anything to fear from in Israel in terms of local crime. I would venture to say we are safer than 70% of the world. The building just looks a bit old that's it. go up the stairs to the third floor walk all the way the two corridors until you will encounter a middle aged lady that would ask for a 40 NIS entrance fee.
Once inside you will thank me for the undiscovered jewel. There are a lot of nice girls here, the crowd is talkative and young. Everybody seem to have a good time. It all happens in a very small space that just makes the whole evening more intimate. Ignore the decor and you will have a blast.
