I don't really get surprised by natural disasters. In my opinion they've always happened, it's just now we have more ways of finding out, and the world is more populated so there are more people in more places, thus it can be more easily documented than in the past.

Earthquakes happen all the time in that area, around that number on the scale and most people barely notice it, if at all. If your buildings are not made of shit like Haiti was, they can stand up pretty well!
