Its one of those things you don't care about until someone fucks with you and then "whatcha gon do aboot it dickhead?" types of situations come along.

Then you buy one for 50 quid front and back and have a literal "fuck you" excuse ready.

1080p HD cameras are dime a dozen. You will want one with a sim card that records constantly and they're cheap. 64GB sims can be bought for almost nothing and each one runs for a good while.

I have this one in my dieselgate VW

Powered via cigarette lighter socket.
It also has internal battery and Gravity sensor. If somebody crashes your car when parked / turned off it turns on automatically and starts recording.

Can you elaborate on this - do you mean it records while you are not driving? Why would you want that?

If you have a go-pro lying around just buy yourself one of the flat mounts and use that. Short battery life is countered by keeping it plugged in.

This guy has been around for a long time and started out with dashcam reviews, really in depth. He explains the in-and-outs and, and give recommendations

http://www.techmoan.com/what-is-the-best-dashcam/

Given that you're in FL, it's better to avoid a cam that has a battery and instead get one that has a capacitor, the temperatures reached in a car in hot weather (especially on the windshield) can cause batteries to swell or explode. If your car mostly sits covered in a garage it won't be an issue, but if it sits out in the sun for extended periods it could be.

Here is the number one capacitor dashcam he recommends:

Yeah you can get HD micro cams for like $30, or you can use action cams etc- but there are certain needs and features specific to car use that you'll likely want, so it's generally better to get a cam that is made for dashcam use if you want it in there full time.

The most recommended camera I've seen is the A119. I'd like a front and rear system, since I believe I'm far more likely to be rear-ended than any other type of accident. I will settle for the A119 for now, and add a rear camera later if I feel like it's necessary.

As a general rule, the driver behind you is required to follow at a safe distance, so if they rear end you its almost impossible for them to prevail in a suit.

Parked up or just out of the vehicle doesn't mean something won't happen nor some random dickhead wanting a piece. When you can point to video evidence the police can easily evaluate the situation.

Weve had this like 12 years ago. America is kind of slow with tech ?
I remember i showed the video of getting hit by a car to a lawyer and he was excited.

The one i had, it only saves when it senses the impact. Im sure those days it will just keep recycling the memory card.

Just get something small if you are in the city. I will be worried about leaving something like that in your car on street.

True. Even if some dumb bitch slams on her brakes and comes to a complete stop on the freeway in busy traffic and you rear end her. Your front bumper is fucked but she bitches because she has a couple scratches.

I tried to argue reckless driving but it didn't matter even if the judge and police officer agrees with you.

Regardless of what the dumb bitch in front of you does, if you rear end another car you were following too close and the accident is your fault. The rule is to follow 2 seconds behind (or 4 seconds in the rain). It's the most easily avoided accident possible. Most people who have never had to brake at high speed in an emergency completely underestimate how much distance it takes to come to a complete stop, especially in older vehicles.

A friend of mine had one of these that constantly recorded and he got out of a speeding ticket (possibly multiple) with it. After he was pulled over he downloaded the video and sent it into court to show that he was simply following the current traffic speeds. No ticket.

The part of the country I live in has the worst drivers I've ever encountered, and I've been to Boston. It isn't just anecdotal either; we have four times the national average for collisions and twice the national average for fatal collisions. Dashcam is a must here. It's already paid for itself when a woman slammed on her brakes in the middle of an intersection, directly underneath a green light, and reversed into me. This is not particularly unusual traffic behavior where I live; it really is that bad.

I use this one.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IHLZIU0/

Easy to mount and position. The buttons are large and easy to feel without looking at the unit. Turning the sound recording off reduces the size of the video files. You can set the number of minutes per file in the menu

The camera can be swiveled to the drivers side window and the sound recording turned back on for interactions with law enforcement. Another button assures that the currently recorded file will not be overwritten.

The exposure adjustment and nightvision are really good. I've actually taken it out of the car to look for things in the dark. The "Parking Mode" is just motion detection. It will begin recording if anything moves in front of it.

I actually get a 10% discount on my insurance for having it in the car as well.

I've also caught three other collisions I wasn't involved in as well and emailed the videos to the police. I always make sure to turn on the audio recording and say "blyat" too.

Things to know:

1) You want a dual-channel that records front and back. This is vital if you need to show how someone passed you or when the officer went back to his patrol car, etc.

2) Your jurisdiction may make having a screen for playback on the windshield or dash into a violation - Distracted Driving or Obstructed View. Keep that in mind when choosing a model.

3) There have been reported cases of a driver turning over their dashcam to the police in good faith and the officer subsequently reviewing the hours of footage on the camera and writing a dozen tickets out of it because he didn't like the driver's attitude. No reason to brag about what you have. Let your lawyer redact the evidence and deliver the bad news to your opponent.

4) Audio recording is a jurisdictional thing in the United States and elsewhere in the world and it may be more trouble to accidentally capture it than to buy a camera which cannot. Capturing a conversation that you are not a part of could be a crime, even if you're permitted to record your own conversations, and as soon as you cross state lines into a state which does not, recording what a police officer or the guy who slammed into you says could turn a civil court battle between your insurance companies into a criminal felony proceeding against you.

Hidey-ho, RVFerinos!
