The Australian politics thread

This is a thread I thought about starting in the past. I'd hoped to start it around the time of the next Australian election in 2019, but the terrorist incident in Melbourne made me decide to start it right now.

Anything about Australian politics that may be of interest to the forum goes here.

The way politics are spiralling out of control these days, they're lucky he didn't fear the worst, break the nearest glass object and stab the fuckers in the throat.

The public will judge a man by what he lifts, but those close to him will judge him by what he carries.

I don't know anything about Australian politics.

From what Leonard's said, I think deadly venomous snakes outnumber humans by 23 to 1, so I assume they're in control of the parliament.

Apparently, this ex-tennis player Margaret Court has some un-PC opinions on gay marriage, so Google Maps have renamed Margaret Court Arena, a smaller arena off the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, after another ex-tennis player, Evonne Goolagong.

I'm not a tennis fan, but this is just PC re-writing of history.

Quote:ABC News Wrote:

The calls for Margaret Court Arena to be renamed appear to have been heeded by Google, albeit slightly prematurely.

The tennis legend has come under fire for a host of recent comments surrounding homosexuality, primarily for saying she planned to boycott Qantas for its support of same-sex marriage.

That prompted fellow tennis star Martina Navratilova to write an open letter in Fairfax Media calling for, among other things, Margaret Court Arena to be renamed to remove all traces of the 64-time major winner.

"I think the Evonne Goolagong Arena has a great ring to it," Navratilova wrote.

"Now there is a person we can all celebrate. On every level."

Well, on Thursday it looked like Google had jumped the gun, with their maps displaying the new moniker.

A FORMER Muslim cleric has been found guilty of marrying off an under-aged girl to an adult man in Melbourne.

Magistrate Phil Goldberg said on Thursday he found Ibrahim Omerdic solemnised the marriage of the girl and a 34-year-old man.

He is believed to be the first person ever to be found guilty of a forced marriage charge, the Herald Sun reports.

Omerdic, who was an imam of the Bosnian Islamic Society and Noble Park Mosque, had fought the charge, claiming the “marriage” was not subsequently formalised under Australian law.

“I’m satisfied the prosecution has proved all elements of the charge,” Mr Goldberg said on Thursday.

Video of the ceremony was screened previously in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, and Omerdic could be heard telling the girl’s mother and her betrothed that she was “very young”.

“As a wife you have a duty to obey your husband,” he told the girl in the video. Omerdic was sacked after his arrest in November and his marriage licence certificate was revoked.

He told police he thought the girl was 17 and he did not consider the pair officially married as he had not seen their ID and proof of age.

Guess all he was looking for was that she was above the age of 6.

I should have pointed out that Channel 10 (which airs The Project) has gone into administration:

Quote:ABC News Wrote:

The Ten Network has slipped closer to being put into administration after confirming it has failed to win a $200 million extended line of finance from its key shareholders.

Key points:

Ten warns it may not be able to continue if it can't find a new $200m line of credit
The board has 48 hours to decide whether to place the company in receivership
Billionaire investors decline to pump any more money into the ailing network
In a statement to the ASX, Ten confirmed it had been told desperately needed finance would not be rolled over beyond the current expiry date of December 23, 2017.

Ten asked to be put into a 48-hour trading halt while it assessed its options.

One of those options is being put into receivership to help escape expensive contracts from major studios and creditors including 20th Century Fox and CBS.

Hopefully we won't have to put up with Waleed again, although he may turn up in other places.

I don't pay much attention to Australian politics, but a few snippets Ive heard on the radio just made me roll my eyes at how much of a dickhead Bill Shorten is.

First was the proposed changes to citizenship criteria - nothing too draconian it seems, the main point being they need to speak English. That'd be hard to argue with, I thought. Wrong! Bill Shorten opposes it.

The next was pauline Hanson saying that Autistic kids shouldnt be in mainstream classes becasue their presence disrupts and affects the other kids. That'd be hard to argue with, I thought. Wrong! Bill Shorten opposes it.

Does this fucking idiot do anything but oppose reasonable ideas? How about doing something constructive, instead of shitting on anything and everything, just for the sake of it. I never had any time for Turnbull, but he's a breath of fresh air compared to Shorten.

Shorten is a classic late-union-degeneration leftie, all about politics over principle. This characteristic makes him dangerous to be your ally and an unanchored coward as a Prime Minister.

Shorten is basically the apotheosis of a strategy taken up by the union movement at large in the late eighties/early nineties after Howard got in and started formalising and legalising how industrial relations worked Federally. This will take a few paragraphs to explain, so bear with me.

Basically, Howard lawyered up the industrial relations system. He took its focus from negotiation and compromise to regulation. The union movement started getting its arse handed to it in the courts, and bully-boy 1970s tactics were no longer working for it. They looked at Bob Hawke and Paul Keating's records in government and thought that the best way to generate more of them was to trawl the universities.

This was a bad miscalculation because Hawke and Keating were aberrations: Hawke retained the common touch in spite of his law degree and Rhodes Scholarship, and he was the best negotiator and industrial advocate the industrial relations commissions had ever seen. He was also President of the ACTU from a fairly young age, a pretty damn significant bit of on-the-job training for a guy who has to make disparate interests stay happy. Keating had bombed out of high school but could sledge better than probably any MP since around Federation, which endeared him to Labor's base. Not to mention that their records were burnished by the economy going through a boom period at least until the late Keating days. Most university-educated folks of Shorten's vintage don't have a lot of experience of being working class, they're all lower middle class at best and generally got their university educations for almost free before HECS was introduced.

Shorten has the university education, but he's not as bright as Hawke. He was educated at private schools, so he never got to punch it out in a schoolyard with an Aboriginal or similar and unlike Hawke he doesn't quite have the same common touch. Hawke transcended being part of the political class. Shorten is consumed by it. His memberships of unions have been brief and relentlessly focused on getting to as high a position in the organisation as possible as quickly as possible.

Hawke was a pragmatist: his role model was John Curtin, i.e. the only PM with sufficient guts to say "Fuck you" to Churchill and recall troops to PNG during World War 2.

Shorten is not a pragmatist, but he's not a leftie ideologue either. Worse: he is a factional ideologue. Shorten reckons he's a Republican, for example, but if the factions that supported him tomorrow came out and said they preferred the monarchy he'd be licking Elizabeth II's cunt within days. The man has the record of knifing not one but two sitting Prime Ministers in the back in the hope of a few poll points. At best this is horrible judgment. At worst it's fucking Machiavellian coldness. That's the sort of man he is, and that's a dangerous sort of man to have as your Prime Minister.

Nonetheless.
Cause Turnbull is such a weak weed, who bends to whatever prevailing wind comes his way.
Along with the Aus. electorate probably having a short-sighted mindest of - "may as well give the other bloke a fair go..."

I can unfortunately see Shorten becoming the next PM...

Might have to ensure the Aus. shit-lord's are willing & able to implement another meme-war down here.

And vote for who?

The liberals are faggots.

Labor are communazis.

The rest will not get a look-in during the next two decades short of a radical change in world politics, because most Australians are too lazy to take more than a passing interest and the idea that there's "more than two and a half parties" sends their fat, triggered ass-cheeks screaming to the comfort of their lounge suite.

I love this country, but the citizenry are not politically capable beings. We were born a convict colony and that mentality persists. We relegate ourselves to the whims of our masters too easily.

The public will judge a man by what he lifts, but those close to him will judge him by what he carries.

Yes indeed, the Westminster system is a retarded system in today's age.

Hopefully we'd end up with a hung-parliament type situation like the Brit's just did.
Less chance for the bureaucrats to do any damage.

Indeed not what I was expecting. I was thinking someone would politely notify me that I don't know what I'm asking because he's gay.

Shorten is a through and through politician. He knows how to play the game, and it seems like that's all it is to him most of the time.

Also what's wrong with the westminster system? I'm not too familiar with the pros and cons.

Our current situation with the Senate gives it a bit of 'colour' / 'flavour'.
Yet otherwise, a main flaw is the situation we have, whereby there's no great option, with only two dud options.
Dud government either way...
