I theorize it can also be a rationalization. If a girl is very beautiful, then you might focus on her beauty, and then if she has looks worse one day than another day, you might question your decision and wonder, "Could I do better?" When she's close to perfection, you're more likely to notice every imperfection.

However, if she's not that pretty, then you might say, "Well, if I got with this girl, despite her being not that pretty, she must have a really awesome personality, or she must be really good in bed, or something." This has been the case with me.
