^What's more, when confronted by someone they sense is dangerous to them most people will enter into a submissive frame to attempt to deflect or draw down that aggression. Of course if the aggressor is intent on robbing or assaulting you then your natural response is going to be useless.
One of the best defensive positions to put yourself in is this.
"No mate, I don't have any smokes..."
Socially it's a sign of surrender which marks you to onlookers as the non-aggressor but in primitive and practical terms it puts your hands where they need to be to defend or strike with, and an aggressor will sense that and be less inclined to mark you as an easy target.
(ideally the hands would be a little closer together to better protect the face at short notice, but this was the best picture I could find)
Exactly, this guy knows what is up, when in a threathening situation, hands should always be up and just doing so signals strongly that you're on to the aggressors intent. The agressor knows this. Keeping hands at your side is the same as saying "please assault me".
Keep your left hand up (if right dominant) and put it out across you open hand, like how an MMA fighter will use it to deflect incoming blows, while making a fist of your right. It also serves as strongly demarcating personal space. No further.
It also helps to live a year or two in a neighborhood with packs of savages, but most people don't want that for understable reasons. I did though and found a good mindset to adopt was along the lines of "my broken nail is worth more than your life". Hyenas and jackals go for the weak and run off when faced even with mock resistance.
The worst thing you can is not be aware or think that you are not allowed to be aware because it is racist or discriminatory or some nonsense. You bet I cross the road if someone I perceive as a risk comes along. They cross the road, it is a clear sign of bad intent. If I hear footsteps, I stop, turn around and watch. I deal with all non-civilized people asking for something in the same way I deal with touts, ignore or shake head and keep walking, if they enter my path, make eye contact, hold it, keep walking.
