The Vince Vaughn image doesn't even do it justice, he was stone cold for multiple seconds. As one reaction noted, "the water in his glass was moving more than he was." It's true!

As for her speech, how easy is it to dissect strawmen:

-Are any of your Hollywood stars listed illegal immigrants? No? They're all working and living legally in the U.S.? Good, then fuck off.
-The Trump "mocking reporter" bit (which has been disproven time and again) was from 2015, not from "this year", so fuck you again!
-Her name was Carrie Fisher and it's nice you consider her "your friend" when you refer to her by a movie role rather than her fucking name
-How about using your lifetime achievement award speech to really honour the people you worked with and brought you to this point? Way to not care about any of them.

Pretty much coincidental, but despite her legendary career I only remember seeing two movies with her in them (Doubt, Manchurian Candidate remake) and didn't like her in either of them, so Trump's "overrated" comment seems pretty good to me! Though I still need to watch Deer Hunter, damn...

Mel Gibson had the chance to pull an epic and heroic stunt, by as soon as everyone started to clap, get out of his chair and get out of there, possibly a few others would have followed, I have seen some people not clapping to her speech. I wish he had done it...I think I would if had his money, career and fame.

Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick 'em all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts. They gave me three seconds to say this. An actor's only job is to enter the lives of people who are different from us and let you feel what that feels like. And there were many, many, many powerful performances this year that did exactly that, breathtaking, passionate work.

Tell that to all the people here in Tampa Bay flying in, renting cars, using accommodations, and spending money for the College Football Playoff this week.

Last time I watched a Hollywood flick, my girlfriend downloaded a torrent for free.

Someone needs to build alt-Hollywood to prove that it would actually be possible to have entertainment media without leftist indoctrination. Seriously, if someone put some real investment into that ... couple of new studios, new streaming media service, all free of left-wing political propaganda and propagandists ... couldn't they take away about half of Hollywood's business in a heartbeat?

RVF investors, I am available. I will pump out 2 movies per year, Godard style, with reasonable budgets. I have other friends that can help.

On another note, back when Paul Schrader (screenwriter and director) was a little more intellectually honest, he reported his uncle once saying to him:

"Do you know who makes television? All the kids who couldn't get along here go out to Hollywood and make TV and they send it back here. Well, I didn't like them when they were here, and I don't like them now they're out there."

Edit: for all saying Streep is overrated, she certainly isn't. She's been among the top level actresses since she started. She's just ignorant about most things not related to acting, and has cut off her ability to expand her craft even more by being unable to relate to over half of the country. She can be talented and a dumb cunt at the same time. I still think Trump's insult is funny and well-placed though, but for a guy who seems to recognize quality I'm sure he's more than playing when he rips DeNiro and Streep's acting ability.

My area of expertise is arthouse cinema. Everything I have made is super low budget and inconsequential. And fiction.

I can't see much winning for Cernovich there. He just needs a competent technical crew.

Also, by my standards I am not even expert/craftsman level, just passable.

Here is some of the proverbial brain bleach to counter that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savely_Kramarov

Quote:Quote:

Upon finally being allowed to leave on 31 October 1981,[2] Kramarov became persona non grata in the Soviet Union, like all celebrities considered traitors or enemies of the state. His name was removed from credits of all the films that had made him so successful.[6] Recalling a newly Kramarov-less Soviet Union, Oleg Vidov, another Russian actor who emigrated after Kramarov, noted, "The government took all of his posters down from the walls. They didn't want to have to explain why he left; it was easier just to forget."[7]

(notice his pronunciation of Greenwich Village, especially if you speak russian).

I can't find the end of the movie, but he defects and works a hot dog stand in a park.

Every time I hear about some actor or group of actors lashing out in the politics arena I can't help but think of this:

We move between light and shadow, mutually influencing and being influenced through shades of gray...

They're either woefully ignorant, or controlled.

Fuck them either way.

On the Rogan podcast, Jordan Peterson was saying how in ancient Greece/Rome, actors were seen as a similar thing to prostitutes - they provide entertainment and pleasure but why else would you seek their counsel? Hopefully we are genuinely witnessing their influence waning.

In lifestyle Roman actors did not enjoy a good reputation and their morals challenged even the decadence of Roman society. Their performances could be lewd, highly sexual and offensive, even going as far as to appearing naked on stage and engaging in sexual acts. They could also be highly critical of the political status quo and so ran the gauntlet of emperor and senator. As expected, some emperors were as critical of them and took certain measures in an attempt to counteract their notoriety: Emperor Julian the Apostate forbade the pagan Roman priests from attending theatrical performances to avoid giving the performances respectability, and the more enlightened Emperor Tiberius would not allow people of the stage to have any contact with the upper classes. Far from being great dramas most Roman plays were whimsical, more mimes and pantomimes; the classics we know and respect were in the minority.

I didnt know that was the case. Its possible this was a reaction to the content of Theater at the time.

A DP (director of cinematography) I worked with was from Romania. Very talented guy.

He dated one of the girls in their major acting school (I'm guessing it is run by the state). Said that they were encouraged by their teachers to all fuck each other -- boys with girls, girls with girls, boys with boys. Shower together and live with one another, being naked often, etc. So they could be totally open with each other and always feel comfortable doing anything on stage and be able to put their own feelings on hold to surrender to the moment.

On one hand, I see how that would work and be helpful. There is nothing worse than a fridged actor who is unwilling to properly play romantic with their co-star. But on the other hand you can see how taking an already overly emotional attention whore personality with a proclivity to ignore reality, and then breaking them even further to de-personalize the wonderful and joyous acts of love and sex... would produce some of the mindsets we often observe in performers.

They are essentially prostitutes, absolutely.

I believe that is why you see the more normal ones as being the guys/gals who just play "types". They pretty much play themselves over and over, and we love it because they are interesting people. But they rarely win awards or become as celebrated as their chameleon peers. Yet they maintain a bit of their humanity.

The biggest own goal she made was to laugh at people who watch football and MMA, saying they are not the arts. That was bad persuasion: in one image she yet again established Hollywood as elitist and condescending towards its major audiences, and tightened Trump's hold on the Midwest and Rust Belt again. Meryl Streep is about the worst messenger for this shit, too: she might be a good actress, but she has always come across like an intellectual snob. I wouldn't have called her overrated: I'd have gone with pretentious.

Especially since most of what comes from the film industry here is trite wannbe Hollywood garbage.
Can anyone here name a Canadian actor? John candy and Pamela Anderson do not count.

There's a case to be made that alot of movies and tv shows are canadian because most of what is shown on american television is filmed in canada, most notably in Vancouver and Toronto.

Remember in the late 90s - early 2000s when the Canadian media kept trying to shove Molly Dogface Parker down our throats?

I remember asking my friends "how come Canadian movies all have ugly girls playing the hot girl part, and American movies are the opposite"? Just another reason why I always felt more American than Canadian.

Even putting the liberal bias aside, I find myself no longer able to relate to mainstream movies and TV shows. They're mindless, predictable, worn out, nonsensical bullshit designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator in order to capture the widest audience possible. Yet their creators try to pass off these revenue-generating machines as some sort of profound art form, and pass themselves off as intellectuals uniquely qualified to tell the masses what they should think. I don't understand who the fuck cares what a Hollywood actor's opinion is on any political issue.

It's unfortunate that Meryl Streep took this stance, I really liked her in Fatal Attraction and 101 Dalmatians.
