US Navy erases over 240 years of tradition to be gender neutral

A guy I knew in college Bonhomme'd with Richard and ended up having to take an anti-AIDS cocktail for the rest of his life.

Bad news.

I wasn't in the navy, but I was in the U.S. Navy Sea Cadet Corps as a youngin' and got to stay aboard the USS Constellation for a weekend. A great ship with a long history. Man that thing blew me away.

As far as names, I would insist that Constellation would at most be a trance club located in the Meatpacking District. (And fitting given that the ship came to life in Brooklyn)

CNO has reversed the decision to scrap the rating system. He can see the political winds changing, better to change on his own than be forced to.

Navy leaders are reversing their controversial decision to eliminate sailors’ ratings and will restore job titles across the fleet, according to a Navy message set for release Wednesday.

Effective immediately, enlisted sailors will officially regain their ratings, the traditional job titles that have inspired a deep cultural loyalty and that have defined enlisted career tracks for generations, Navy officials said.

The move comes three months after the Navy stunned sailors around the world in September by eliminated ratings titles, including those such as boatswain’s mate that dated back to the founding of the service.

The extraordinarily rare move comes after a fierce backlash from the fleet that became a distraction from the Navy's broader effort to reform the antiquated personnel system, Navy officials said.

Adm. John Richardson, the chief of naval operations, called it a “course correction” and acknowledged the overwhelmingly negative reaction from the fleet was a key factor in the decision.

Like I saw from Clinton to Bush. They'll be a lot of changes with the best of the military in mind, not making it some kind of social experiment.

Aloha!

Except that the military was a social experiment for a long time.
Racial integration in 1948 was a social experiment at the time, for example.

I am afraid that women appreciate cruelty, downright cruelty, more than anything else. They have wonderfully primitive instincts. We have emancipated them, but they remain slaves looking for their masters all the same. They love being dominated.

True, but it was also of net benefit to the military. Black and Asian men fight just as hard as white men.

Not every experiment is worthwhile.

Glad to see the powers that be come to their senses on this. I wonder if they'll reverse the slackened body fat standards next.
