Then the wall would seem waste of time and money.

But then where would the rich folks get cheap labor?

Not every illegal in the US comes there in order to look for a job. Your "employer checks are enough border control" approach would let every single criminal, drug dealer and welfare parasite roam free forever. You need several different measures all at once to catch the different profiles of illegals, wall being one of the most important.

America can build the wall, just as it built the Panama Canal.

We need to remember that America is capable and can achieve great things. A big beautiful wall would be one of them.

Teddy Roosevelt wasn't afraid to get the job done, Trump needs to channel the inner rough rider and build the wall!

Physical walls work. Period. Everything else is nothing but mental masturbation or a red herring aimed at maintaining the status quo, which incidentally doesn't work and hasn't for several decades.

Just updating, the gofundme has crossed 19 million, still climbing steadily but slowly. A congressman from Ohio has submitted a bill that would allow private citizens to contribute money to a project building the southern border.

Did somebody already post all this? Oh well happy new year.

Why are private citizens even banned from contributing to the government in the first place? It makes zero sense. It's like getting arrested for helping a National Guardsman to rescue an old lady from a hurricane.

If Texas is allowed to turn blue, I could see that. It could be the SJW's Berlin wall moment, but instead of dismantling a wall against economic Marxism, they would be dismantling a wall in favor of cultural Marxism. "We are dismantling America's legacy of systemic racism, white supremacy, and imperialism," they would say. It could be the Millennial Generation's we are the world moment. I could see the left in a virtue signaling frenzy about it -- and the Spanish language reporters on the border.

Even if that is to be our fate, I still think that the wall is worth building. Fuck them. Build it 10 feet higher. Now that I think about it, I am starting to like the steel wall idea.

Because it punches a hole in the narrative that citizens are helpless economic units that aren't capable of self organizing to deal with big problems, which can only be dealt with by the government.

Remember the time FEMA turned away private semi trucks full of bottled water?

I'd like to point out that this Gofundme wall might have been useful to helping Trump feel comfortable that the average American citizen supports him. The numbers are huge. 20 m from 300k people. Looking at the list of donators is really kind of trippy. They are 60% women, lots of minorities.

As someone who supports American border security 100%, I'm having a hard time be living a wall would be the most cost effective option to stop illegals crossing into usa.

Having law enforcement continual search for immigrants already entered use, with harsh punishment would seem more effective. Is this being done?

Also, wouldn't 1 million spent on radars and surveillance along to the border be more cost effective than a wall?

See overall people thinking border security is something the democrats are against. If you look at past legislation from previous democratic leaders, it's easy to see this is not the case.

No immigration policing system will ever work unless they adopt a system where only people who look like the above are allowed in. That's why President Eisenhower's administration was able to kick out the Mexicans so quick during his Operation Wetback.

Not American but having been to USA, other multicultural states and homogeneous countries (in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia) - the homogeneous places were far better experiences for me than shitholes like Britain / France.

In some ways I would celebrate the collapse of USA because at least some of the successor states (especially ones based around places like New Hamsphire or Oregon) might continue the original American legacy while the other mixed places can go be 3rd world client states of Mexico and China.

That's not quite right. Please let's be accurate here.

They are giving every donor an option to transfer that money to their non-profit they set up. Go to the GoFundMe site and click the big link in the update, and you can request the transfer in about 5 seconds.

It makes perfect sense. GoFundMe wasn't really set up properly the first time. Now they've got a legal way to do it, and GoFundMe is allowing the money to be transfered for anybody who gives email approval. I can imagine their legal department figuring this out.

If you DON'T opt in for the transfer, then they'll refund you automatically. I'm sure they'll lose a lot this way, but hey, it's still a great project. I just doubled down.

RIGHT ON!

I don't understand any of this stuff about building a second wall privately. What was wrong with just gathering money to donate to the government?

They haven't been able to set up a legal means to donate directly to govt.

Plus, thre are a lot of organizational advantages to doing it this way. They can act as an R&D arm. They could be a contracting agency. Much more efficient to have outside firms do a bunch of this. Just like DOD and defense contractors.

Plus it gets funds into pocket of Brian Kolflage so he can buy plane tickets and internet service, basic shit that he needs to push the agenda.

They are going to build the wall, not just fund.

They have some sections of land on the border with owners who have invited them to start building a wall. They are even talking to local contractors and concrete companies about donating materials and/or time.

Can you imagine the local concrete guys, those big burly dudes who wear american flags on their hardhats? Will they do a good job and move this project along quick? Fuck yes. Most contractors work 50% slower than needed, it's just part of the game. If they are incentivized by moral outrage and patriotism they can build shit faster than you imagine. Remember the factories in WW2 pumping out a liberty ship PER DAY?

If they're smart they'll have wives bring BBQs to feed the working men. Let some teenagers jump in and carry stuff. Make it like a barnraising. Those are FUN and great old fashioned PR.

Brian Kolfage has said they'll just use the money they've collected so far. About 10 of the 20 million originally committed has been re-approved by the original donors for BUILDING. 10 million is still a nice chunk of change.

Once they build a single stretch, no matter how sloppy the work, that will trigger conservatives all over the country to jump in. This could be like the transcontinental railroad. Read your American history...the transcontinental railroad was an amazing achievement, mostly because, it was built by PRIVATE capitalist companies, who were authorized to sell bonds with government backing, and were granted 1 mile of land on each side of the rails. They built that damn thing with trees they cut down in local creeks. Any shit they could get their hands on. Thousands of miles of total wilderness covered. They had to rebuild the whole thing in sections for years, but it didn't matter. The key is to build it first.

Building a wall might be the same thing. Throw it up any way you can. Ignore the people who say "oh, it has to be perfect". Fuck that. Just build it. Then rebuild later as needed. Shit, Trump might actually announce that he's using private competitive builders with some kind of 30 year bond issuance. Lots of ways to do this.

The key is that for 100s of years people in the border states have really not minded the mexican immigrants that much...we've winked and looked the other way as they came over to pick our crops and wash our driveways. If we're really going to build the wall it's as much a mental statement as a physical monument. Sorry Amigo, no more.

I believe when Trump talks about the Trump Wall, he's not speaking of a physical barrier as the end goal. He's being figurative and I believe the goal is more of a 'virtual wall'. His aim is to reduce the supply/demand of northbound illegal crossings by eliminating the ability of illegals to find work in the US (demand) and, through redistribution of wealth via a more progressive Mexican government, increase the economic situation for their poor (supply).

This would drastically reduce the border patrols current burden and render the current barriers exponentially more effective.

Original post in Trump thread: thread-48360...pid1495827

Trump isn't a figurative type of guy. If you look at his business history he is very 'literal' in how he goes about his plans. Of course, plans can change but I don't believe he is going to happy with a virtual "wall". His compromise wils take place on size, scope, and structure choices of the wall (you hear him walking back and being open to various sorts of design types for example).

This is what I think will happen after the 3 week respite.

Trump will declare a national emergency to build the wall, some liberal asshole judge in California will issue an injunction potentially freezing the national emergency. DOJ will request SCOTUS quickly examine the case and issue a ruling to allow the national emergency to go in place within 2 weeks; just like what happened with the travel ban he issued. Supreme Court may suspend the injunction and allow the national emergency to go through as the case makes its way to a full panel hearing, either way the result will be the same.

Trump does have a lot of executive power, and with SCOTUS being 5-4 conservative he may honestly have a path to a true concrete/steel wall along the southern border.
