Duterte aligns Philippines with China, says U.S. has lost

Looking back on this thread 8 months later, nothing came of the Philippines' "alliance" with China, who continues trying to strong arm them, and Duterte's Muslim sympathies are biting him in the ass, forcing him to turn to the US military for help with a situation that he allowed to get out of control.

His negotiations with the Communist rebels also blew up in his face, and he went from calling Trump a bigot to kissing his ass.

If only someone could have called all of this when it happened [Image: angel.gif]

Well, not exactly nothing.

"A late-night raid in the southern Philippines left 15 people dead, including the mayor of Ozamiz City — the latest high-profile casualty of the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's bloody war on drugs."

Damn, Duterte is a savage ( I mean that in a good way).

^ Meanwhile the city of Marawi has been held by ISIS for two months and the Communist rebels (NPA) have spread all the way from the southernmost to the northernmost areas of the country (Luzon), where they've been ambushing and killing police and military personnel in the past weeks.

Tough on drugs, soft on Islam and Communism, as I've been predicting for months.

Duterte aligns Philippines with China, says U.S. has lost

Both China and the US are now competing to help Duterte fight terrorism. I've to wonder if the man is as bad at political chess as was said of him.

US, China vie for anti-terror influence in the Philippines

Quote:Quote:

China and the US are already competing for influence over those long overdue military modernization plans. When reports emerged that Filipino soldiers had been killed by skilled militant snipers, China responded with the provision of 3,000 modern sniper, automatic and high-precision rifles and six million pieces of ammunition.

Beijing has also offered to help finance rehabilitation and reconstruction in Marawi when the devastating battle is finally won. Philippine officials have estimated reconstruction will cost as much as 20 billion pesos (US$400 million), of which the government hopes the private sector will help with housing rehabilitation.

Analysts say Beijing has seized on the conflict to gain a new entry point in boosting military-to-military linkages in new strategic areas. They note that counterterrorism cooperation will also divert attention from the two sides’ ongoing disputes over territories in the South China Sea.

China’s Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua said that after the Marawi conflict is won that China would be interested in holding joint military counterterrorism exercises. Zhao referred to Islamic extremism as a “common enemy”, an apparent reference to Beijing’s struggle with ethnic Uighur militants in its northwestern Xinjiang region that has recently taken on an international dimension.

There have been no reports that ethnic Uiguhrs have been involved in the Marawi fighting.

China’s offer, apart from assisting the war against regional terrorism, will also lend support to Duterte’s declared war on poverty in his home island of Mindanao, the country’s most underdeveloped and conflict-ridden region. Beijing has already offered to help build a modern railway on the island centered in his hometown of Davao.

... While China and the US compete to play a bigger role in countering terrorism in the Philippines, the US has a clear first-mover and superior expertise advantage. Manila and Washington launched counterterrorism cooperation and operations soon after the 9/11 attacks on the US amid reports some of the plotters had spent time in the Philippines.

The US has played a mostly behind-the-scenes role in combating terror groups in the Philippines and has offered high dollar bounties for the capture or killing of certain terror suspects, including for Abu Sayyaf Group leaders. The US and Philippines hold regular joint military exercises in the name of fighting terrorism, though to date those exercises have had limited preventative success.

China’s future role should not be underestimated under Duterte, who has publicly praised China’s capabilities in suppressing terrorism. China is known to have documented and developed “best practices” in suppressing militants in its northwestern Xinjiang region it apparently believes are transferrable to other regional theaters.

Duterte has sought stronger bilateral ties with China while rolling back US strategic relations, including a call last to downgrade annual war games to scaled down humanitarian exercises. He has since come under criticism for losing focus on a terrorism threat that was quietly mounting while he jousted diplomatically with the US over rights issues.

While China is a comparative novice in fighting terrorism abroad, unlike the Syria and Iraq battle-hardened US, Duterte appears keen to give Beijing the opportunity to advise counterterrorism tactics in Marawi. Duterte’s challenge ahead will be how to best balance both superpowers’ offers of assistance amid their competing ideologies and visions for the region.

Duterte aligns Philippines with China, says U.S. has lost

No doubt that losing the Phills as a strong US ally was one of the worst blunders of the Obama admin. The US lost an ally for no reason other than Obama couldn't shut his arrogant mouth. Normally we lose allies because we blow up countries or murder leaders, but here was ceding ground to China because of some kind of ideological human rights purity test (that the US fails anyways) Obama had a hard on for.

The Philippines are in China's backyard, and the established Chinese community in The Islands has run their economy for a long time. This is kind of like Spain losing Cuba two centuries ago, Obama's a tool, but this was bound to happen.

What exactly are you guys going on about?

One of Duterte's biggest beefs with the US has always been the ongoing presence of US Special Forces soldiers in Mindanao since 2002. He claimed they were the reason peace couldn't be made with the Muslims.

Seeking help for the Marawi situation represents a total reversal of his past stance on the US military. He went from blaming them for the situation to looking to them as a solution. Not to mention the complete 180 in his statements on Trump as compared to Obama.

Notice that the article above simply says that China offered to do joint exercises -- but the US and other Western nations, like Australia, are directly involved right now. And the reason that the Philippines needs weapons is because random US Congressmen are still blocking arms sales because of Duterte's drug war.

The ball is still very much in the US' court with regards to an alliance. But don't expect Duterte to reject China as long as they're breathing down his neck and the US is not committed to their defense. He's hinted at war with China on multiple occasions but always has to walk it back because they don't have the firepower to defend themselves without the US' help.

Little thing about this..Chinoys have no loyalty to China at all.

Believe me they are pinoy through and through aside from retaining certain productive confucian aspects of Chinese culture. I know many and they have a certain disdain for the mainland just like you see with Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, etc..

A lot of Chinoys may have their own separate little rich communities but it's about class more than anything.

The footage of Philippines air force strikes on Muslim "strongholds" is some of the saddest and most pathetic combat footage ever. They still use prop planes that look like a less cool version of the WW2 hurricane and drop bombs that look like a shittier version of WW2 ordnance.

I know a girl who is visiting her relatives south of Cotabato right now. There are reported insurgents who raid little villages on the outskirts between Cotabato and general Santos. The military has setup major checkpoints all along the way so things aren't out of control so to speak.

However, there is definitely an insurgent presence which breaks up into smaller guerilla bands to raid far south of marawi. They tried to take a major part of Cotabato once in their own little mini Tet offensive but got their asses handed to them by the subpar Philippines forces.

The good thing about muslims is that they are mostly very shitty fighters and losers.

It's not about political leanings or ideology, it's about cultural predispositions and business opportunities. Too much capital and business action in that fast-growing $11 trillion economy two hours away from Manilla. There's capital flows in both directions. The billionaire class of Chinese Filipino has been invested in China, so it's normal to see Chinese influence growing in that country.

That's the thing..their cultural predisposition, political leanings, and ideology does not lean towards the mainland at all. There's a paltry outflow of capital from this group to the mainland. If anything Chinoys distribute to the rest of southeast asia first and then the west where some of their relatives have settled.

I know a shitload of chinoys they have zero sympathies towards the mainland. It's apples and oranges culture wise.

I don't think people understand the gulf between these two ethnic identities. It's significant.

They don't identify at all is what i'm saying. I know enough of them to say that for certain.

They are usually 3rd generation + Chinese immigrants to the Philippines like what you see in Thailand, Malaysia, etc.. as well. It's the southern Chinese diaspora in SE Asia. They are descendant from Teochew, Hokkien, etc.. speaking minority groups who consisted of an underclass mercantile group within China itself.

They were a mostly unwanted minority within China to begin with which is why they migrated out. They have zero loyalities to the original culture which spit them out.

That's interesting, given the fact that they're overrepresented among the elites in their new host countries.

How did they manage to work themselves up into being such a powerful minority in all of these Asian countries despite their working class roots? Ethnic nepotism like you see in the US with Jews?

Chinito, you're confusing ideology with economic interests, money talks. You have the same dynamic in Taiwan, where nationalists there aren't exactly fond of Mao but they've been investing in the mainland and are slowly becoming part of China's economic sphere. China has eclipsed all other countries as the leading trade partner with Taiwan, and they've already supplanted the US and Japan as the Philippines' leading trade partner.

Southern Chinese have always been known to be extremely good at mercantilism. Even if the British never colonized Hong Kong it would have undoubtedly still have been a prosperous port in China from mostly southern merchants.

It's really a combination of confucianism (hard work, education, and discipline) which carried on with these migrants. These are traits sorely lacking in one area or another in most SEA cultures. When you put a magnifying glass under the culture and see why Chinoy families prosper and standard Pinoy families flounder it's pretty apparent.

Your standard pinoy families sponge off of relatives, have a shitload of children they can't support, are lazy, and generally indolent people. They usually live off of their productive family members which drags the entire generation down each time. In the countryside (which is most of the country) the average Filipino male is worthless as fuck and the average female filipina is good for breeding and that's about it. That's why there's lots of babies born everywhere and noone to really nurture them into anything substantial for society.

The Philippines has huge deficits in all 3 traits when you come down to it. This isn't a slam against the Philippines because Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, all other southeast asian nations etc.. are all sorely deficient as well.

So it's not hard to see why a minority group who is motivated can rise to the top of the society there. The notable U.S. dollar denominated billionaires in the Philippines are almost all chinoy for a reason. They are a fairly new class to spring up due to their business skills. The old families descended from european colonials (ie. Ayalas) are the other class that do well.

I'm not sure what the older spanish filipino descendants do these days but most likely it involves "modeling" or "entertainment" careers while snorting coke off mirrors.

Yep, what I posted earlier in the thread is still very relevant a year later.

Quote:Quote:

There are literally over a dozen different Muslim insurgency groups in the southern Philippines, not including the "rebel" groups like the MNLF, MILF, etc. The media and government just file it all under "Abu Sayyaf", I suppose to keep people from freaking out.

The recent Davao City bombing, for instance, was committed by the Maute group, not Abu Sayyaf. Many of the "extremist" groups have soft alliances in an attempt to establish an ISIS caliphate in the region.

On top of that, the rebel groups are interchangeable with the "extremist" groups, as they regularly help each other. Most of the fighters are related by blood or marriage.

The Maute group has supplanted Abu Sayyaf as the media's "face" of the insurgency within the past few months, but the dynamics are still there -- and now, on top of that, you have dozens, if not hundreds, of foreign fighters pouring into the area as ISIS loses its hold in the Middle East.

The region has historically posed a problem, even for the Americans and Japanese, because of the combination of the area's geography (dense jungles and scattered islands) and the typical Islamic fighters' disregard for their own lives and the lives of others.

It's not that these groups are actually formidable, it's just such a fucking quagmire and it's feeding on Duterte's indecision and bluffing.

He tries to pander to the Islamic and Communist groups; then they screw him over and he claims he's going to wipe them out and eat their livers; then he panders; then the says he's going to wipe them out; and on and on and on.

He plays the same game with the US and China, but it was predictable a long time ago.

To be fair, he was working with a shitty hand to begin with, but you can't keep trying to bluff your way to the jackpot when all you have is a pair of 7's.

"Philippines Government Will Kill Women, Children Fighting for Daesh"

The Philippines military is having trouble with women and children now shooting at them as they try to retake Marawi. To be clear, this isn't surprising by any means, it just confirms what I've said all along -- that Duterte's sob stories about the US' killing of Moro civilians during the early 20th century were pure bullshit.

Muslims always use women and children as soldiers, suicide bombers, and/or humans shields than use it as "evidence" against the evil West when said women and children are killed.

Duterte's total blindspots on Islam and Communism are just as bad as many Western European politicians. Now he's trying to push a law granting even further autonomy to the Muslim regions of the country through Congress to appease them.

Keep in mind that Moros were enslaving Filipinos just a hundred years ago. At least the Spanish made it half a millennia before resubmitting themselves to their Moor/Moro masters.

Duterte tells Philippine soldiers to shoot female rebels in their vaginas

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte last week told soldiers to shoot female rebels in their genitals. His presidency has thus far been defined by violence — and often violently misogynistic language.

BEIJING—Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte last week told soldiers to shoot female rebels in their genitals, the latest in a series of violent, misogynistic remarks.

Addressing a group of former communist rebels on Feb. 7, Duterte, who served as a city mayor before becoming president, appeared to encourage Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to target women in conflict.

“Tell the soldiers. ‘There’s a new order coming from the mayor. We won’t kill you. We will just shoot your vagina,’” he said.

“If there is no vagina, it would be useless,” he continued, appearing to imply that women are useless without their genitals,” according to local media reports.

The Presidential Communications Office included the comment in the official transcript from the event, but replaced the word “vagina” with a dash.

Duterte’s presidency has thus far been defined by violence — and often violently misogynistic language.

Since he came to power on a promise to kill all the country’s drug users and dealers, thousands of Filipinos have been shot dead, prompting the International Criminal Court to open a preliminary examination.

Duterte regularly denigrates and threatens women, but when challenged, insists it was all just a joke. Just last week accused women of “overreacting” to the president’s comments. “I mean, that’s funny. Come on. Just laugh,” he said.

According to the official transcript from the Feb. 7 event, the crowd did, in fact, laugh.

Duterte has made headlines for “joking” about the rape of a kidnapped Australian, lamenting he hadn’t been first, and for telling troops to rape women in conflict. He often shares his unsolicited opinions on the sexual attractiveness of various women, particularly female politicians who question his policies, in an apparent effort to demean, shame and silence them.

As Duterte’s translated remarks began to circulate over the weekend, feminist and human rights groups expressed their anger and dismay.

“Duterte (sic) latest nasty remark openly encourages violence against women, contributes to the impunity on such, and further confirms himself as the most dangerous macho-fascist in the government right now,” said a representative for Gabriela, a feminist organization, in a statement.

“He is pushing the fascist AFP to commit more bloody human rights violations and grave abuses of international humanitarian law, and takes state terrorism against women and the people to a whole new level.”

In a statement, Carlos Conde, a researcher for Human Rights Watch, called it “the latest in a series of misogynist, derogatory and demeaning statements he has made about women.”

“It encourages state forces to commit sexual violence during armed conflict, which is a violation of international humanitarian law,” the statement added.
