One of the listings was in Portuguese. The other I didn't look closely and it was buried in the type. My search was based on location, price, and last minute booking. Not that it's even what I'm asking about. Just sharing my experience using it overseas for first time.

As a budget traveler didn't want to spend a lot not being sure how long I'd want to stay. This is my first time to South America. I felt more comfortable having a host I could ask questions to.

Anyway I just filled out the form and requested the max. See what happens. Probably just drop it but wanted it documented in case.

When you use ABNB, don't expect a hotel experience. Especially in a shared apartment. And you're gonna lose and damage stuff when you travel. Just accept it and get over it. Make peace with your host and try to enjoy the rest of your stay.

I used to think booking a shared place when traveling solo was a good option. Maybe you'd get a cool guy that would tell you all the best spots, wingman or even throw a few girls your way... Or you'd get a hot girl or girls that you could game or poach their friends... Worst case was you'd have an instant social circle to go out with.

After staying in a couple shared places I decided that this isn't a good strategy at all. Its more or less luck who you stay with, many 'hosts' dont even live at the listings so even if they sound cool it will just be filled with random people, who in my experience are usually weird. Having your own place is far better for the reasons we all already know.

As for damages I recently had a big problem in Brazil - completely destroyed a huge 6ft thick glass wall hanging light one night drunk. Contacted the host and a week later received an email asking for nearly 4000 reales ($1000)! For a fucking light!! Refused to pay anything near that sort of price and after lots of back and forth emails Airbnb got involved. After a few days they agreed this was an extortionate amount and I paid less than $200.

i've stayed in airbnbs all around Asia. mostly private/entire apartments to myself, but occasionally I'd rent a private room out of someone's flat while they were there when on a budget. i've never had any major problems, except for massive cockroach infestation in one place.

one time I stayed with a late 20's girl who got pissed off at me bringing girls back, and told me I was not allowed to do it anymore. there was no mention of 'no guests' in the description; she was obviously jealous.

Didn't see anything posted about it, but an AirBnB host in northern California apparently has to take a class in Asian American studies, make a formal apology and pay $5000 in fines after upsetting an AirBnB renter with a remark about her ethnicity:

TL;DR - the host cancelled after the princess got flaky about extra guests and two dogs, and in the process used racially charged remarks: "One word - Asian" and "This is why we have Trump, so we don't have to listen to foreigners"

I've hosted before, and you don't need to do too much research as your gut will usually tell you which potential guests will be trouble. If they are too fussy, ask too many questions about stupid inconsequential shit, and from the get go just seem like they are going to require constant attention, I pass. It's got nothing whatsoever to do with race, sex, language or culture, just a feeling. I once rejected some weird German dude because of his level of neuroses during the email exchanges back and forth. It seemed like he'd either break something or hurt himself in the place then try to blame me - just not worth it when there are so many other non-freaks willing to drop by.

I have a few past tenants who left positive reviews who might be mistaken for lezzers, now that you mention it. Either way, it definitely helps to have good reviews about you as either a host or a tenant.

I had a business trip recently to a relatively expensive location where I had previously used an airbnb in the same city. The Airbnb was going to be $220 a night. I had this what the fuck am I doing moment (fortunately a few hours within the time of cancellation) and zapped it. I went to other sites to look for an alternative, and sure enough a Trump property was only $300. It was a great stay and no support given to Airbnb.

I've never used airbnb in the U.S. before but when I read about experiences of people who have and the stories concerning various hosts as well as guests i'd have to say using airbnb in asia is just a way better experience. I've used airbnb a lot and hosts are very hands off for the most part in asia. There's never any drama and prices are reasonable.

People are way more petty in north america these days about everything. I'd be concerned about an overly intrusive host more than anything. There's a lot of neurotic weirdos out there. I'd also never rent a property to randoms on an online service in the U.S. Traditional tenant vetting with credit checks and backgrounds are really the only way to go. This is especially true on the west coast where squatter's rights and other bizarre shit happens with shitheads gaming the system.

There's just far too many degenerates out there in the U.S. thesse days and inconsiderate people trying to get one over. No sense of shared community or moral sense anymore with most.

Maybe in a few years Airbnb won't have such a monopoly. I hate giving money to them. If I use them then usually I will book the minimum stay, then try to re-negotiate with the host outside of Airbnb.
