'Very helpless'

In early July the tourist arrived at the hostel on a bus with migrants, from Dortmund.

"He was so different from the others. Very, very helpless," said Red Cross worker Christoph Schluetermann.

A translation app confirmed Mr Schluetermann's suspicions that the tourist had got entangled in the asylum system by mistake.

"It came up with phrases like 'I want to go on a trip abroad'," he said. It emerged that the tourist had plans to visit Italy and France.

The man, from northern China, had calmly allowed the authorities to take away his passport and visa, and take his fingerprints.

He then had a medical check and was given the standard papers that migrants get on arrival in Germany. He had meals at the migrant hostel and received some spending money.

Mr Schluetermann said hostel staff made futile calls to various consulates, hoping to identify the tourist. An error over the man's visa caused further delay.

Finally his asylum application was stopped and he was able to continue his European tour.

According to German broadcaster WDR, the man did not get angry but left Germany saying simply that he had imagined Europe to be quite different.

The West has a hardon for Chinese human rights activists; they probably assumed he was one. According to the South China Morning Post here:

Go to Germany, register as a refugee, get some money, travel around Europe, return to Germnay, pick up more of that "refugee spending money", rinse and repeat.

Yeah, after I posted I thought about it and maybe they assumed he was Falun Gong and the government wanted to redistribute his internal organs to the proletariat.

In all seriousness this seems like a good hack. What are the actual requirements of a refugee? Any German speakers able to shine some light on this situation?

You have to come from a "non safe country". There are list out there whats a safe country and what not. If its a safe country in general, is should have critical political environment, like China for example. Furthermore they try to check where you come from with interpreters and a personal talk. But even when you are denied, mostly you don't face deportation and will be "condone".
If you really want to stay in Germany, there are millions of ways. For the situation at the moment, when you just plan a short trip, apply as refugee. Till your application will be denied you get some money anyway and housing. For this you can do a 3 month trip in Germany very cheap. Should be a great tourist hack. Just make sure you apply in the right state. Not all give money.

Shows that the workers at the refugee processing centers are overwhelmed and don't have much time to properly assess each individual's situation and status. So, how are they supposed to keep out terrorists and rapists?

There are stories of people from the poorer Southern/Eastern European countries taking buses to rich, generous ones like the Netherlands, declaring themselves in need political asylum (on a Friday night, right after immigration offices are closed).

Bam, they get hotel room and spending money until the offices reopen on Monday and deny their case...by which point they've done their shopping and have gone home.

Eastern European criminals abuse the refugee system for long. They know their application will be denied. Till it happen a few months pass. Till then they do crimes and after they are done they reject the application for be a refugee. In my town they did arrest a Georgian guy, he doing this for about 10 years. Criminal gangs abuse this for long time. Same for gypsies and their beggar gangs. All kind of organised crime is run by Arabs, Eastern Europeans or Gypsies.

Having dealt with Chinese daily for over a year I can only imagine how he'll go back to China and be like, "Wow, I didn't know that Europe was populated by all black and brown people! There are no white people in Europe!"
